The Missouri has a history like no other river. Explore this great waterway’s legends on a journey along the Loess Hills Scenic Byway into Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. Meet a modern-day treasure hunter aboard his steamboat “Arabia” in Kansas City, walk the brick streets of Omaha's Old Market, fly through Amelia Earhart's home in Atchison, Kansas, and trot into Saint Joseph, Mo., to see how the Pony Express found its beginnings and how Jesse James came to his end. Study Harry Truman’s life in Independence, descend to the underground rooms of historic Weston, and follow Lewis and Clark's footsteps to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Learn how significant events affected the river valley, and gain an understanding of the Loess Hills, the only geological formations of their kind in the Western Hemisphere. Laugh with storytellers and relax with the currents as you wind around the Missouri River’s many bends aboard two riverboat excursions.

Walking up to one hour with stops, climbing two flights of stairs at your own pace; some inclines, uneven paths. Must carry own luggage. Getting on/off bus and riverboats.

Omaha

The creation of the Lone Tree Ferry in 1850 provided a convenient means of crossing the Missouri River and turned Omaha into the “Gateway to the West.” Railroads and stockyards spurred the fledgling city’s early growth, and today Omaha sports a rich mosaic of performance venues, museums and parks, as well as a historically significant jazz scene.
