Based in the metropolis of Los Angeles, home to Philip Marlowe, Jack Webb and O.J. Simpson, come face to face with a challenging mix of fact and fiction. A criminal forensics expert compares real life methods of crime scene investigation to those shown on popular “CSI” television programs. In the classroom, get the inside scoop from the Los Angeles Crime Lab on tricks of the investigative trade. Learn the actual techniques used in solving a crime and meet with mystery writers to discuss literary crime scenes and the intermingling of truth and fiction and how they create their riveting stories. Explore the culturally rich and sometimes sordid cityscape of Los Angeles by bus, in hot pursuit of yet more crime scenes, both real and fictitious.

Walk 1-2 blocks during bus field trip to crime scenes in LA.

Program coordinated by Road Scholar Regional Office.

Van Nuys

Named for Isaac Van Nuys, who in 1872 built the first wood frame house in the now highly urbanized San Fernando Valley, the neighborhood of Van Nuys is a melting pot of cultures and home to the valley’s first historic district. The nearby Sepulveda Basin is home to several large recreation areas and parks, Japanese gardens and a wildlife refuge.
