Mexico's greatest Mayan center? Palenque, considered a major study site by many archaeologists. Mexico's most inclusive biodiversity zone? Chiapas, where one can descend quickly from high mountains to rainforest. For 10 days, journey through time and place as local experts lead explorations to breathtaking archaeological sites, Colonial landmarks and natural wonders in these remarkable areas.

Inhabited since the Archaic period of Mesoamerica, Chiapa de Chorzo provides the best vantage point to embark on our journey through one of Mexico’s most spectacular canyons — Sumidero Canyon. By boat, learn about and discover the canyon’s magnificent rock formations and wildlife, including herons, vultures, egrets, kingfishers and even a few crocodiles. With a local expert discuss the traditions, customs and religion of the indigenous communities in the area.



Lodging: Colonial-style, centrally located four-star hotel.



Days 3-6

Coach to San Cristóbal de las Casas
4 nights

This colonial village in the highlands of central Chiapas is at the Indian heart of the state, providing a special opportunity to see how indigenous cultures live in modern Mexico. In addition to history, culture, customs and crafts such as embroidery and textiles, lecturers discuss natural history and the Zapatistas political movement. Explore the Indian towns of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan, and Rancho Nuevo Ecological Reserve with its marvelous caves. Music and dance performances enrich our experience.

Palenque, with its soaring pyramids, towers and sprawling temple complexes, is regarded by many archaeologists as the most extraordinary of the major Maya sites. Learn about the history of the Maya at this UNESCO World Heritage Site through lectures and intimate examination. With a biologist, discover the area’s natural history and ecology at Cascadas de Agua Azul. Explore the early Olmec culture at La Venta — one of the country's most impressive museums.
