Meander the corridors of the Palace of Cortes and Municipal Palace; stand in awe-inspiring silence at the La Asunción Cathedral, and let loose in the impressive archaeological zone of Xochicalco (in the place of the house of the flowers), known principally by its monument dedicated to Quetzalcóatl, the feathers serpent.

The exhilarating city of Oaxaca is known the world over by its mysterious yet exciting rituals, blend of international cultures, colonial charm and rugged scenery. At its core, though, Oaxaca is perhaps best known for its commemorative “Day of the Dead” ritual. Discussions with local experts prepare you to participate in the celebration where inhabitants construct elaborate altars of flowers, food and candles to honor the spirits. Field trips to archaeological sites and a demonstration of the La Gelaguetza folkloric dance round out your time in Oaxaca.

Before departing for Mexico City, explore the city of Tlaxcala for informative, on-site archaeology discussions and an excursion to Cacaxtla, a site known for its beautifully preserved murals. During a field trip to Huamantla, famed for puppetry art, visit the Museo Taurino and the National Museum of The Puppet.
Lodging: Beautiful, 19th-century Colonial hotel located Tlaxcala’s main square.
