Explore the mountains of Far West Texas! Begin in the Davis Mountains, a "sky island" rising 8,300 ft like a purple mirage, cool and forested, surrounded by the Chihuahuan Desert. Travel to Big Bend National Park, with its massive canyons cut by the Rio Grande, vast desert expanses, and the Chisos Mountain range. Study its complex geology and unique, diverse ecosystems of mountains and deserts teeming with wildlife and natural resources despite the region's austere appearance. Relive Texas history at Fort Davis, one of the west's best restored forts, where you will explore its impact on the development of the western frontier and survey little known facts about the Butterfield Overland Stage Road.
Walking on unpaved paths and uneven ground. Hiking opportunities offered to enhance the studies of the region but not required. Participants handle their own luggage.

Big Bend National Park
Bordering the Rio Grande, Big Bend is one of the largest and least visited national parks. Its dramatic canyons, desert expanses and Chisos Mountain range are home to exceptionally diverse plant and animal life. Big Bend offers a unique opportunity to experience an ancient and austere landscape in relative solitude.
