Experience the exhilaration of sailing aboard an 84' two-masted schooner with huge, gaff rigged sails, the “Sylvina Beal” (1911). Sail around islands of Maine and Canada through three large bays, including the Bay of Fundy. Help hoist and trim sails, tie knots, navigate, and feel the wind in the rigging. Learn the history of the vessel, which carried herring to Eastport canning factories, and see how wooden boats are constructed today. Take a field trip to a famous lighthouse and its museum. With 25' tidal changes, watch islands emerge from the sea. Observe eagles, seals, and porpoises. Meet a lobsterman who will demonstrate the process of catching lobsters, and enjoy a traditional lobster dinner -- all amid spectacular fall foliage.
Steep gangways with handrails to the boat dock at low tide. Entry onto the boat from the dock is by four stairs with handrail. Fixed ladder down to heads (bathrooms). Schedule and route subject to weather.
Program in association with Washington County Community College.
Eastport
