The islands of Hawaii are a birder's paradise. More than 150 species of beautiful birds inhabit the Hawaiian Islands, 40 of which are endemic. Our instructors--avid birders-- lead daily field lectures to the region's best birding sites. Highlighted by a presentation with a world-renowned birder and photographer, discussions feature Hawaii's amazing plants, animals, and geology, and the vanishing endemic bird species. Beginning and experienced birders will sight some of the world's most unusual and rare birds. Explore Waimea Canyon, Koke'e State Park, Kilauea Point and Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuges, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Explore seaside nature preserves with frigates, tropical birds, and albatross. In mid-elevation rainforests, search for amakahi, elepaio, apapane, and i'iwi. Venture into the high dryland to locate the incredible palila. Hawaii's avifauna provide a showcase of co-evolution and adaptation.

Daily field trips through varied habitats. Walking up to two miles at an easy pace; mostly flat, maintained trails; portions of some trails unimproved, muddy on Kauai; elevation gain/loss less than 500 feet during field trips. Highest elevation 4,000 feet. Program limited to 12 participants.

Program in association with University of Hawaii at Hilo.
