Daniel Egan

Daniel Egan has degrees in music theory from St. Olaf, the Eastman School of Music and Yale, where he is on faculty. He has appeared as soloist or ensemble singer with the New York Philharmonic, Opera Orchestra of New York, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and was in the permanent ensemble at New York City Opera. His recordings include “Sweeney Todd” with the New York Philharmonic and backup vocals for Patti Page’s "Live at Carnegie Hall: The 50th Anniversary Concert.” Both earned Grammy nominations.
 
Gerry McGee

Gerry McGee is a native New Yorker who grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He graduated from Manhattan College and worked in Midtown as a corporate vice president for more than 40 years. Gerry is a board member and treasurer of Music Before 1800, Inc., which presents eight concerts of early music each season on Sunday afternoons.

  Start of Program:
3:00 is hotel check in. From 4:00-5:00 is Road Scholar registration. Pick up packets from representative in meeting room posted in the lobby. You will be staying at Club Quarters - Midtown that night.
  End of Program:
Our program ends by 10:30; 12:00 noon is check-out. You will be staying at Club Quarters - Midtown the night before.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Photo I.D.
  Parking availability:
Parking is available at a discounted rate at Central Parking Garage located at 38 West 46th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. The rate is approximately $25 per 24-hour period. There are not in and out privileges. The garage is open 24 hours / 7 days.

From Newark Airport Follow signs from baggage claim area to the AirTrain monorail direct to Newark Airport Station. Take NJ Transit to New York Penn Station. From Penn Station take the number 1 or 2 UPTOWN train to 42 Street- Times Square.   From JFK to Club Quarters Exit the airport heading north on the Van Wyck Expressway. Take the Long Island Expressway west. Take the Midtown Tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel, follow signs towards "Uptown" (heading west). Head west to Madison Ave. Make a right onto Madison Ave. Take to 45th Street and turn left. Go through 1st light (5th Ave). Club Quarters will be 1/2 of the way down on your left. Look for a blue awning with the CQ logo in gold.
  From LaGuardia to Club Quarters Exit the airport heading east on the Grand Central Parkway. Take Parkway to the Long Island Expressway- head west. Take the LIE to the Midtown Tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel, follow signs towards "Uptown" (heading west). Head west to Madison Ave. Make a right onto Madison Ave. Take to 45th Street and turn left. Go through 1st light (5th Ave). Daily Schedule

Day 1: Registration/Orientation
(Sunday, January 11)
   
 Afternoon: Hotel check-in available after 3:00pm. From 4:00-5:00pm: After checking in at the hotel front desk, take your bags to your room and come to the designated meeting room (it will be posted in the lobby) to register with your Program Coordinator and pick up your arrival packet after 4. Programs are planned far in advance, so local circumstances may require changes from time to time. We will notify you as quickly as possible should there be any changes and appreciate your understanding.
 Dinner: 5:00pm: Enjoy your first meal at Restaurant Patrick, conveniently located inside the hotel. This restaurant features regional American cuisine, focusing on regionally sourced products from the Berkshires to the Jersey Shore. Dinner in the restaurant is available and included even if you arrive late. Our meal is scheduled for 5:00pm so that we can get through orientation and have some time to explore on your own. If your arrival is delayed, please attend orientation and then eat afterwards.
 Evening: 6:15pm: We begin our orientation to the program and introduce staff and members of the group. We’ll review the schedule and any updates and answer any questions you may have. Following orientation we will have an optional walk through one of the local neighborhoods.

Day 2: History of Opera/Learn about Franz Lehar and "The Merry Widow", visit Lincoln Center

Day 3: Learn more about aspects of opera/Performance: "The Merry Widow"
(Tuesday, January 13)
   
 Breakfast: Hot Breakfast in the hotel
 Morning: Lectures explore various aspects of opera productions including the chorus.
 Lunch: Lunch on your own in the Neighborhood
 Afternoon: Meet people in the Opera World
 Dinner: Dine in neighborhood restaurant
 Evening: Attend a Metropolitan Opera performance of Lehar's "The Merry Widow." A form to upgrade your ticket is included in your welcome packet.

Day 4: Review the week thus far and learn about new media and the opera
(Wednesday, January 14)
   
 Breakfast: Continental Breakfast in Meeting Room
 Morning: Discussion and critique of the previous night's performance and learn about the Met's approach to new media.
 Lunch: Lunch in Meeting Room
 Afternoon: 3:00pm we have reserved the backstage tour for you. It is the only available time this week. You will not be able to attend a theater matinee and go on the backstage tour. Ordinarily you would have a free afternoon but we thought you would enjoy this amazing opportunity and you still have the evening to Explore New York on your own or take in another Opera.
 Dinner: Dine on your own at your own expense

Day 5: Learn about Puccini/Performance: La Boheme
(Thursday, January 15)

 Afternoon: Meet people in the world of Opera

Day 6: Critique & Discussion/Review of the Week/Departures
