Political Satire from Mark Twain to Jon Stewart

Political satire focuses on the foibles of politicians and allows us to inject humor into what is frequently not very humorous. Through lectures, writings and TV clips, we’ll examine some of the best American political satirists.



Everyman of Film: Lemmon, Eastwood, and Hanks

Through their films, these three actors became symbols of the American man at his best. They were pillars of moral courage and defenders of traditional values. Learn about their lives and gain appreciation for the "Everyman" image in their films.



Shall We Dance: Musicals of the 1950s

The 1950s brought new sophistication to musical theatre. Strong books heightened with words and music by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Lowe, Loesser, Styne, gave new focus to choreography by Robbins and Fosse. Lectures, film clips, live music.




St. Petersburg (Florida)

Jim Schnur

Jim Schnur has lived his entire life in Florida’s Pinellas County. At the University of South Florida, he earned a bachelor's in history and master’s in history and library science. He works at the USF St. Petersburg library as special collections librarian and archivist. Jim participates in local and state historical organizations, and has published articles on Florida history and Florida baseball.
 
Rick Kistner

Rick Kistner had two careers that could not have been more different. He spent 30 years in law enforcement as a police chief in cities in Ohio, Kansas, Connecticut and Florida. At the same time, his performing arts career landed him roles in over 100 stage productions, as well as in films, TV commercials and voice work. Rick has a master's degree in public administration from the University of Dayton, and studied acting under Richard Digby Day at the Eugene Oneill Theatre Center in Connecticut.

 Arrive To: Check-in at the Continuing Education Center's West Lodge front desk. Report to assigned classroom for registration.

 Evening: Program coordinator will conduct an orientation and introduction program. Final itinerary will be provided.

Day 2: 1950s Musicals, Everyman of Film / Special Guest Speaker
(Monday, January 26)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entries to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Morning: The 1950’s brought new sophistication to musical theatre. Spend the morning with our musician/performer/instructor Jason Fortner as you explore the works of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, Loesser and more. Live performance of selected pieces will be featured this week. Take a short refreshment break between classes.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entries to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Afternoon: Everyman of Film: Lemmon, Hanks and Eastwood. Begin the afternoon with our film historian and professional actor Ron Sommer as he discusses how these three actors became symbols of the American man at his best. Learn about their lives and see these images in their films. After class, take a tour across our beautiful 281-acre waterfront campus via motor coach. PLACEMENT OF CLASSES ON THE SCHEDULE (MORNING, AFTERNOON OR EVENING) ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE.

Day 3: From Mark Twain to Jon Stewart, Everyman of Film / Field Trip / Movie Night
(Tuesday, January 27)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entries to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Morning: Political satire specializes in entertainment focused on the foibles of politicans. Wherever organized government exists, so does political satire. Examine some of the best American political satirists and understand why their humor is timeless. There will be a short refreshment break between classes.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrées to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Afternoon: Begin the afternoon with a class on Everyman of Film. Then, board our motor coach for a tour of a local museum. ALL EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entries to choose from in a self-service format with trays.

(Wednesday, January 28)

 Morning: Two lectures in the morning: Continuation of 1950's Musicals and Twain to Stewart. Take a short refreshment break between classes.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entries to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Afternoon: Continuation of Everyman of Film After class, join us for a discussion session with our international students. Get a new perspective on life outside the US.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrées to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Evening: Final class for Everyman of Film

Day 5: From Mark Twain to Jon Stewart / Field trip to downtown St. Petersburg / Live Musical Entertainment
(Thursday, January 29)

 Morning: Continuation and final class for Twain to Stewart. There will be a short refreshment break between classes.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrées to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Afternoon: Spend the afternoon on your own. Transportation provided to the waterfront area of downtown St. Petersburg. Lots of things to do within walking distance or local trolley ride: museums, shops, galleries, etc.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrées to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Evening: Take a musical trip down memory lane with a local favorite on this last evening of the program
