Disney-style entertainment, shopping malls, theaters, good seafood restaurants and endless water sports are all part of the attraction. Ann Wilson

Ann Malys Wilson is an Interpretive Ranger at Myrtle Beach State Park, the one full-time job she has ever had. Holder of a marine biology degree at UNC Wilmington, Ann coordinates the sea turtle, trail and nature center volunteers, cares for nature center and injured animals, and maintains the nature trails. Memorable highlights for Ann include watching a green sea turtle on the beach with a family during a morning patrol, witnessing a humpback whale breach, watching playful harbor seals and dolphins, and seeing a double rainbow over the ocean on Earth Day.
 
Lee Brockington

Lee Brockington is a senior interpreter for the Belle W. Baruch Foundation at Hobcaw Barony in Georgetown County. A graduate of Columbia College, she was a participant in the Seminar for Historical Administration at Colonial Williamsburg. Lee is also a former curator of education for the Historic Columbia Foundation and an instructor of history at Coastal Carolina University. Her research appears regularly in newspapers and magazines and on educational television. As a former member of the Pawleys Island Planning and Zoning Commission, Lee was elected to the Pawleys Island Town Council and served before and after Hurricane Hugo. She is editor of “Pawleys Island, Stories from the Porch,” a collection of oral-history interviews, and author of “Plantation Between the Waters, a Brief History of Hobcaw Barony.” She also wrote the Pawleys Island entry for Walter Edgar’s “The South Carolina Encyclopedia.”

Travel Details
  Start of Program:
Check in at Springmaid Beach Resort & Suites between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. Program registration will be held in the lobby area of the hotel. The evening meal and orientation will follow. You will be staying at Springmaid Beach Resort that night.
  End of Program:
Check out by 10:00 AM in the lobby of the registration building. You will be staying at Springmaid Beach Resort the night before.

The Participant Information Form is required. The only required document is a photo ID such as a driver's license.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival and Check-in / Program Registration / Welcome Dinner / Orientation
(Sunday, March 29)
   
 Afternoon: Hotel Check-in: Available from 4:00 p.m.

Program Registration: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in.
 Dinner: In the oceanfront ballroom, we’ll enjoy a salad, entrée and sides, and dessert. Beverage choices include coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.
 Evening: Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date daily schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have.

Indicated times are approximate; program activities and schedules may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

We have set aside some free time in the schedule for your personal independent exploration. The Group Leader will often be available during free time to accompany informal excursions, activities, or meals that have been excluded from the program cost. You are welcome to join if you like, with any associated costs on your own.

Day 2: Hands-on Golf Lessons and Instruction / Question and Answer Session with a Golf Pro
(Monday, March 30)

Note: Wear your Road Scholar neck wallet for identification at all meals in the Marlin Restaurant. A shuttle is available to transport participants to the golf course and our first group instruction.



   
 Breakfast: At Marlin’s Restaurant, enjoy a buffet with choices such as biscuits and gravy, hot cakes, sausages, egg dishes, potatoes, breads, cereals, fresh fruit, an omelette station, and more, plus juice, milk, coffee, tea, water.
 Morning: We’ll head to one of our three Golf Courses: Legends Golf & Resort of Myrtle Beach, Tupelo Bay Golf Center or Burroughs & Chapin Cane Patch & Midway Golf Courses & Driving Range for group instruction. Venues will change daily, according to the itinerary distributed during orientation. There will be opportunities for individualized lessons including personalized swing video and launch monitor analysis, hands-on ball striking tips, full swing fundamentals, and short game coaching. The instructors will also cover driver, course management, and mental skills during the program.
 Lunch: In the clubhouse at the Golf Course, we’ll enjoy a light, healthy buffet with a choice of salad and sandwich, plus coffee, tea, and water; other beverages available for purchase.
 Afternoon: With our golf pros, we’ll continue to work on aspects of our morning sessions such as the swing, course management, and mental skills.
 Dinner: At the resort.
 Evening: A golf pro will join us at the resort to review the rules of golf and host a lively question and answer session.

Day 3: Hands-on Golf Lessons and Instruction / Play 18-Holes of Golf / The Loggerhead Sea Turtle
(Tuesday, March 31)

Note: A shuttle is available to transport participants to the golf course. Golf carts are provided for afternoon play but may be restricted to golf cart paths depending on weather.



   
 Breakfast: At the resort.
 Morning: We’ll head to a different course for our second day of group instruction. Lesson topics will continue from the previous day.
 Lunch: At the golf course.
 Afternoon: Play 18 holes of golf at the course of the day as part of the program. (Tee times will be provided during lunch.)
 Dinner: At the resort.
 Evening: We’re joined this evening by a naturalist who will discuss the fascinating natural history, nesting, and feeding habits of South Carolina's state reptile, the loggerhead sea turtle, a threatened species.

Day 4: Short Game Instruction / On-Course Instruction During 18 Holes of Golf
(Wednesday, April 1)

Note: A shuttle is available to transport participants to the golf course. Golf carts are provided for afternoon play but may be restricted to golf cart paths depending on weather.



   
 Breakfast: At the resort.
 Morning: We’ll head to Whispering Pines Golf Course for our third group instruction. Today’s lessons will focus on the short game, including putting, chipping, pitching, and sand bunkers.
 Lunch: At the golf course.
 Afternoon: We’ll join our golf pros for a special afternoon of on-course instruction during 18 holes of golf, paying close attention to the short game.
 Dinner: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.
 Evening: At leisure. You might like to explore the entertainment possibilities Myrtle Beach has to offer. Or enjoy the resort’s complimentary Harbor Oaks Miniature Golf Course.

Day 5: Golf Instruction / 18-Holes of Golf / Guest Naturalist Presentation
(Thursday, April 2)

 Breakfast: At the resort.
 Morning: We’ll head to a different course for our third group instruction, which will also include personalized video and launch monitor analysis. Lesson topics will continue from Days 2 and 3.
 Lunch: At the golf course.
 Afternoon: We’ll play 18 holes of golf at this course, applying what we’ve learned. Tee times will be provided during lunch.
 Dinner: At the resort.
 Evening: Road Scholar 40th Anniversary Celebration. Enjoy Anniversary Cake to celebrate 40 years of Road Scholar learning adventures, and reminisce about your own experiences. Our Group Leader will reflect on Road Scholar’s past four decades, including the changes seen and advances made.

Day 6: Wrap Up Session / Program Concludes

 Morning: We’ll meet in the hotel conference room with an instructor for a review of the mental skills and golf techniques we’ve learned, followed by a question and answer session. This concludes our program.
