From beginners to the experienced, try various watercolor techniques in a beautiful landscape setting. Paint from sketches or photographs with emphasis on foliage, scenery, flowers, composition and creativity. Basics in sketching and color are covered.

Ripley

Nestled in the Appalachian foothills of the Ohio River Valley in the western part of the state, the county seat of Ripley features a historic downtown and theater and easy access to nearby areas of natural beauty, abundant wildlife and hiking trails.



Accommodations
Conference center in tranquil, natural surroundings. Air-conditioning; nonsmoking. Home-style cooking in dining hall.

Deborah Lester

Deborah Lester, an artist for 30 years, paints in several mediums but is primarily a watercolorist. She won numerous awards, and most recently, received the Best of Show at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg's Season of Color Exhibit for "Coal Tipple Memories," an oil painting of a tipple in Wyoming Co. where she grew up. She likes to paint scenes of Appalachia and the people and culture that represent the beauty of West Virginia. She now lives in Shady Spring and paints in her home studio.
 
Jerre Watkins

Jerre Watkins is a fourth-generation artist who has been painting for more than 30 years. A graduate of Oklahoma State University, Jerre received a bachelorís degree in interior design, and later received her masterís from Marshall University. She began teaching art in 1987, and her works can be found in corporate and private collections in West Virginia and surrounding states. Although watercolor is her first love, Jerre enjoys painting in varied and mixed media with a focus on design.
 
Jeanne Brenneman

Born in Freeport, Pa., Jeanne Brenneman has lived in Greenbrier County, W.V. since 1973. Jeanne first tried watercolor at a YMCA class in South Carolina in 1972, and has been fascinated by it ever since. She is a signature member of the W.V. Watercolor Society and an associate member of the Southern Watercolor Society. Jeanne is a founding member of the Greenbrier Artists, and teaches watercolor classes at her home studio and at Cedar Lakes Crafts Center.

Driving Directions
  If you are traveling from the east. Cedar Lakes Crafts Center is located about 3 miles off Interstate-77 near Ripley, WV, south of Parkersburg, WV and north of Charleston, WV. If you are traveling from the east, consider Interstate-68 and Route 40 through Cumberland, MD to Morgantown, WV, south on Interstate-79 to Clarksburg, west on Route 50 to Parkersburg, and south on Interstate-77 to Ripley. Exit Interstate at Exit 132, at bottom of exit ramp, make a left on Route 21 north, go under Interstate, make first right onto Cedar Lakes Drive, Cedar Lakes Conference Center will be 3 1/2 miles on right. Many of the by-ways off the interstate are quite scenic, but they can tend to slow your progress (especially Route 33 East, despite AAA recommendations).
  If you are traveling from the west. Cedar Lakes Crafts Center is located about 3 miles off Interstate-77 near Ripley, WV, south of Parkersburg, WV and north of Charleston, WV. If traveling from the west, drive through Columbus, OH on Interstate-70 and south on Interstate-77 to Ripley. Exit Interstate at Exit 132. At bottom of exit ramp, make a left turn on Route 21 north, go underneath Interstate, make first right onto Cedar Lakes Drive. Cedar Lakes Conference Center is 3 1/2 miles on right. From Louisville, KY, travel on Interstate-64 to Charleston and north on Interstate-77 to Ripley. Exit Interstate at Exit 132. At bottom of exit ramp, make a right turn on to Route 21 north, make immediate first right onto Cedar Lakes Drive. Cedar Lakes Conference Center will be 3 1/2 miles on right. Many of the by-ways off of the interstate are quite scenic, but they can tend to slow your progress (especially Route 33, East, despite AAA recommendations).
Equipment Requirements: Students should plan to bring brushes, paints, pencil, sketch pad, palette, real sponge, kitchen spatula or old credit card, kneaded eraser, masking tape and plastic container for water.
