Suggested Reading List

Dark Genius of Wall Street

Author: Edward J. Renehan, Jr.

Description: Though reviled for more than a century as Wall Street's greatest villain, Jay Gould was in fact its most original creative genius. Gould was the most astute financial and business strategist of his time and also the most widely hated. He was the undisputed master of the nation's railroads and telegraph systems at a time when these were the fastest-growing new technologies of the age. Dark Genius of Wall Street combines lively anecdotes with the rich social tapestry of the Gilded Age to paint the portrait of a man who was undoubtedly the most talented financial buccaneer of his generation - and one of the inventors of modern business.

Hudson River Villas

Author: John Zukowsky & Robbe Pierce Stimson

Description: Devotees of architecture, photography and regional history will enjoy this magnificently illustrated book documenting 123 residences built along the Hudson River Valley over the last 300 years. The authors present a complete textual history of each mansion from original architect and occupant to its present-day function, accompanied by interior and exterior drawings and photographs culled from contemporary and historical sources.

The Angel Tree - Celebrating Christmas at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Author: Linn Howard and Mary Jane Pool

Description: This book showcases the stunning collection of Loretta Hines Howard's Neapolitan Baroque crèche figures which is displayed on The Angel Tree and is one of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's most cherished treasures. Loretta Hines Howard gave her collection to the Museum in 1964. For many years she installed it personally, work that has since been carried out by her daughter, Linn Howard, co author of this book, who is now aided by her own daughter. The book tells the fascinating story of the crèche and provides thumbnail biographies of the artists to whom particular figures can be attributed. The splendid photography was created for this book by Elliott Erwitt, whose work can be found in galleries and museums around the world. The Angel Tree is a book for the entire family, a joyous retelling of the Nativity story illustrated with pictures that will afford hours of happy exploration.
