Spectacular land formations and ancient ruins provide an abundance of captivating images in the Four Corners region. Discover the color and history of four states through the lens of your camera during discussions on composition and technique. This course for beginner and intermediate photographers integrates classroom and hands-on instruction. Visit Utah to photograph the magnificent desert vistas of Valley of the Gods and ancient rock art panels. Capture the colorful landscapes of Canyon De Chelly in Arizona. Shoot other-worldly rock formations in New Mexico’s Bisti Wilderness.Your stay in Colorado features photography of the spectacular cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park. Your experience of the ancient ruins and rock art will be enriched by background discussions with an archaeologist, rounding out your understanding of the southwest's history. The capstone event is a multimedia presentation of the best of your week's work.

Activity Particulars

Walking 2 to 4 miles a day, with options to walk less. Terrain varies. Elevations of 4,500-7,000 feet. For serious beginner and intermediate photographers.

Mesa Verde Country

Mesa Verde Country encompasses rich archeological and natural treasures, from the cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloans at Mesa Verde National Park to the spectacular red rock scenery in nearby canyons. The area is just a short drive from the Four Corners region along scenic byways and through quaint western towns, including Cortez.

  Description: Kelly Place is both an outdoor educational center and unique bed and breakfast located in the heart of the Four Corners. The lodge is an adobe-style building with courtyard, built in the mid-1960s. The atmosphere is relaxed, southwestern style. Situated on 38 acres, nestled between majestic Sleeping Ute Mountain and the red rock canyons--former home of the prehistoric "cliff-dweller' Ancestral Puebloans, bordering Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, and featuring over 25 archaeological sites. Descend into a kiva, fully restored by Road Scholar participants, and imagine what it was like a thousand years ago.

  Facility amenities: Kelly Place Bed & Breakfast is on an archaeological preserve with an adobe-style lodge and adjacent cabins among Anasazi ruins, fruit trees, a majestic mountain view and sculpted canyons. Double occupancy only; multiples upon request. Wireless internet is available. Full country-style meals are served daily in the main lodge. Documentary DVD & VHS movies and a variety of books and magazines are located in the lounge/library. All bathrooms are in the rooms. Hair dryers included. Some cabins may be used. Driving Directions
  Albuquerque, NM For couples, it may be cost effective to fly in to Albuquerque and rent a car for the entire stay. The drive between Cortez and Albuquerque is across level, scenic terrain and takes about 4-5 hours.
  All points It is possible to avoid driving on high mountain roads by avoiding the (very scenic) roads west of Denver or Colorado Springs. Try to approach Cortez through Gallup, NM or Farmington, NM, for flatter terrain.
  Cortez, CO Take 491/160 South two miles to traffic light at defunct truck stop. Take right filter onto Road G. Sign says Airport and Hovenweep. Travel 10.2 miles to entrance sign for Kelly Place. Follow narrow road about a mile to lodge.
  Denver, CO Great Lakes Aviation is the only airline serving the Cortez airport. It connects with flights in Denver only. Driving time from Denver is about 7 1/2-8 hrs.
  Shiprock, NM Take 491 North approx. 40 miles to traffic light at defunct truck stop. Turn left onto Road G.
Elevation Note: Lodging is at 5,480 ft. Highest elevation experienced will be 7,000 ft.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Check-in and orientation/Dinner/Personal introductions and program background -
(Sunday, October 12)
   
 Afternoon: Please plan to arrive between 3 and 5 PM. The group will meet for orientation at 5:15 PM.
 Dinner: Home-style meals are served in the main lodge dining room.
 Evening: Your instructor and program facilitator will go over the program in more detail. You will learn more about your instructor, the facilitator, fellow participants and introduce yourselves.

Day 2: Instruction, shooting and critique at Kelly Place.
(Monday, October 13)
   
 Breakfast: Our full, country-style buffet breakfast features a hot entrée and delicious homemade granola.
 Morning: View power points on composition and exposure. Go over camera and find camera controls. Talk about the use of viewfinders, go outside & practice composition with them. Next, use your camera, shoot using wide, narrow, close views of the landscape and surroundings. Find art elements and practice rule of thirds. Meet at the kiva for a noon shoot when light is optimal.
 Lunch: A buffet style homemade lunch is provided in the lodge dining room at Kelly Place, featuring seasonally appropriate foods, beverages and dessert.
 Afternoon: Go over exposure controls, white balance, bracketing, ISO, histogram. Have students practice changing them in lodge, then shoot outside. Return for instruction on dowloading/archiving, have students pick 3 photos for evening critique.
 Dinner: A hearty homecooked meal prepared especially for you is served buffet-style in the Kelly Place dining room, including soft beverages, and dessert. Beer or wine may be purchased.
 Evening: Critique, discussion and preparation for tomorrow.

Day 3: Photo-shoot Arizona from Shiprock lava, over the Lukachukai Pass, to Canyon de Chelly
(Tuesday, October 14)
   
 Breakfast: Our full, country-style buffet breakfast features a hot entrée and delicious homemade granola.
 Morning: Photograph a unique vista of the Shiprock formation and the volcanic vents associated with it. Continue on a scenic drive over the Lukachukai Mountains where you will stop to stretch your legs, breathe fresh mountain air and capture desert views. From there, you will drive to the north rim overlooks of Canyon de Chelly. Short walks from parking to photo-sites.
 Lunch: Picnic lunch at Chinle. Morning drive - approximately 140 miles.
 Afternoon: Drive to the southern overlooks of Canyon de Chelly for more spectacular views of the canyon floor, walls and towers.
 Dinner: A hearty homecooked meal prepared especially for you is served buffet-style in the Kelly Place dining room, including soft beverages, and dessert. Beer or wine may be purchased.
 Evening: Short discussion about our day and what to expect at Mesa Verde. Relax and review your photos.

Day 4: Photo-shoot Colorado: Mesa Verde National Park
(Wednesday, October 15)
   
 Breakfast: Our full, country-style buffet breakfast features a hot entrée and delicious homemade granola.
 Morning: Morning light shooting (before breakfast). Visit to world famous Mesa Verde National Park. Capture scenery from the high mesa and visit spectacular "cliff-dweller" ruin sites.
 Lunch: Picnic lunch will be at the Park Museum Campground.
 Afternoon: Continue photo tour of Mesa Verde. Your program facilitator is an archaeologist who can tell you more about these ancient sites.
 Dinner: A hearty homecooked meal prepared especially for you is served buffet-style in the Kelly Place dining room, including soft beverages, and dessert. Beer or wine may be purchased.
 Evening: Relax and review your photos.

Day 5: Photo-shoot New Mexico; Stone Caps and Orange Rocks of Bisti Wilderness
(Thursday, October 16)
   
 Breakfast: Our full, country-style buffet breakfast features a hot entrée and delicious homemade granola.
 Morning: Morning light shooting around Kelly Place before breakfast. Information about Bisti. Critique for those interested. Additional shooting of mountain, canyons, ruins, etc. around Kelly Place.
 Lunch: A buffet style homemade lunch is provided in the lodge dining room, featuring seasonally appropriate foods, beverages and dessert.
 Afternoon: Drive to Bisti Wilderness. We will park and walk into Bisti one to two miles to observe and stretch our creativity in photographing bizarre rock formations. Sack meals at the site. Photographing evening light and arriving at the vans by dusk.
 Dinner: A hearty homecooked meal prepared especially for you is served buffet-style in the Kelly Place dining room, including soft beverages, and dessert. Beer or wine may be purchased.
 Evening: Relax and review your photos.

Day 6: Photo-shoot Utah from Valley of the Gods, Goosenecks and Ancient Rock Art Photo computer time/Optional photo-shoot at Kelly Place sites. Final week's end photo slide group show and optional critique.
(Friday, October 17)
   
 Breakfast: Our full, country-style buffet breakfast features a hot entrée and delicious homemade granola.
 Morning: Travel to Valley of the Gods in Utah for several stops to photograph stunning red rock formations and towers. One-on-one interaction with your instructor will help you find your best shot of the scenery.
 Lunch: Picnic lunch at a scenic spot in Utah.
 Afternoon: Drive to Sand Island rock art panels near Bluff which offer glimpses of the ancient past. Shoot through the layers of time to capture clues to what was on the minds of the Ancestral Puebloans. Meet in Day Lodge at Kelly Place for photo workshop time. Organize your best for the evening slideshow and (optional ) critique to share with other participants. You may also choose to use your time to explore the beautiful scenery and ruins at Kelly Place.
 Dinner: A traditional Kelly Place cook-out may be enjoyed on the courtyard tables (weather permitting), as you relax with your new friends and enjoy the beautiful Southwestern scenery. Beer and wine are offered at no cost.
 Evening: Enjoy viewing participant's photo slideshow of favorites accumulated over the week. Optional critique of additional images if time permits.
