Celebrate the 150-year-plus history of railroading in Vermont. White River Junction was once the largest train yard north of Boston, and freight and passenger trains still roll by every day. Lectures will document Vermont's rich railroad history and current renaissance, featuring firsthand stories by prolific authors and lifelong railroad workers. Go close up on a working rail yard, see Vermont by rail and chug your way to the top of the highest peak in the East.

Driving Directions
  From the East (Boston and Manchester airport) Take Interstate 93 North to Interstate 89 west. Continue until you cross the Connecticut River into Vermont. Get off immediately at first exit, White River Junction, Interstate 91 North. Keep right as you join Interstate 91 and get off immediately at Exit 11, White River Junction. Continue straight through first traffic lights. Go down hill 1/2 mile and straight through second traffic lights, following sign to White River Junction. Continue 1/4 mile to dead end and turn right. Hotel Coolidge is on your right.
  From the North (Burlington VT) Take Interstate 89 South. Get off at the Interstate 91 interchange just before you go into New Hampshire. Follow signs and keep left for Interstate 91 North. Then keep right as you join Interstate 91. Get get off immediately at Exit 11, White River Junction. Continue straight through first traffic lights. Go down hill 1/2 mile and straight through second traffic lights, following sign to White River Junction. Continue 1/4 mile to dead end and turn right. Hotel Coolidge is on your right.
  From the South Take Interstate 91 North into Vermont. Get off at Exit 11, White River Junction. Continue straight through first traffic lights. Go down hill 1/2 mile and straight through second traffic lights, following sign to White River Junction. Continue 1/4 mile to dead end and turn right. Hotel Coolidge is on your right.
  From the west Take Route 4 east through Vermont. When you reach White River Junction village, continue straight through traffic lights instead of turning left over bridge, following sign to White River Junction. Continue 1/4 mile to dead end and turn right. Hotel Coolidge is on your right.

(Monday, July 28)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room
 Morning: Lecture at hotel.
 Lunch: Lunch in hotel dining room.
 Afternoon: Learn about the White River Junction community down the years of its railroad history, along with a short walking tour.
 Dinner: Dinner at hotel or other location.
 Evening: An expert will discuss regional railroad depot architecture.

Day 3:
(Tuesday, July 29)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room.
 Morning: All-day field trip to climb to the top of Mt. Washington on the Cog Railway in New Hampshire. En route to the "Cog" we ride the Conway Scenic Railroad up through the dramatic Crawford Notch to Bretton Woods.
 Lunch: Lunch on field trip.
 Afternoon: Continuation of all-day field trip to climb to the top of Mt. Washington on the Cog Railway in New Hampshire. Return to hotel for a late dinner.
 Dinner: Dinner in hotel dining room.
 Evening: Late dining (and no evening program).

Day 4:
(Wednesday, July 30)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room.
 Morning: Daylong field trip by train to area historical railroad sites. Ride Amtrak from White River Junction to Bellows Falls VT and a visit at a working train yard and round house in Walpole, NH.
 Lunch: Lunch on the field trip.
 Afternoon: Continuation of morning field trip, and return to hotel by bus.
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel.
 Evening: Evening lecture at hotel.

Day 5:
(Thursday, July 31)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel dining room.
 Morning: Morning lecture on railroad photography.

 Evening: A Vermont filmmaker will discuss and show clips of his work.l
