Enjoy Treehaven’s vibrant fall colors as you focus on the rich visual experience that its woods, fields and shorelines have to offer. Demonstrations and instruction in plein-air sketching, taking color notes, simple painting techniques, composition and use of light and shadow help you identify and appreciate the species native to the area. Through fields trips and an excursion to a local museum, study past nature artists, explore personal aesthetics and gain insight into your own growth as an artist.




Highlights

• Learn the elements of design and the principles of basic watercolor and drawing in a relaxed setting.
• Study composition, contrast, line, texture, form, rhythm, repetition, value and color under the direction of a noted artist/instructor and apply them to your own unique style.
• Take day trips to northern lakes, bogs, forests and waterfalls at Dells of the Eau Claire, as well as the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum’s annual Birds in Art exhibit.

Tomahawk

Set in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Tomahawk is surrounded by forests and lakes. Fishing, boating and skiing are complemented by small-town activities. Harley Davidson attracts a crowd of 30,000 in September for an annual ride.

Ann Singsaas

Ann Singsaas is an artist living, teaching and working in Stevens Point, Wis. She majored in art at Concordia College and received a bachelor’s in 1991, and continues her education in several visual mediums. Since 1998, she has been painting in watercolor and has won numerous awards for her botanical work. Her classes are filled with demonstrations and explanations of techniques and materials. Ann enjoys working with students to answer individual questions and provide one-on-one help.

  From North Take I-39/Hwy 51 to Hwy A Exit. Left off ramp. Continue on Hwy A. Hwy A will intersect with Hwy H (Stay on Hwy A, left at stop sign). Go about 2 miles and take a Right on Pickerel Creek. (Sunday, September 21)

Note: Welcome to Treehaven, a natural resources education, conference and research center located in northern Wisconsin! Check-in anytime between 3:00-5:30 p.m. Enjoy dinner in Treehaven's WinterBerry dinning room at 5:30 p.m., followed by a welcome from Treehaven staff and your instructors. You will receive your itinerary, directions , maps and have a chance to write down your goals and questions during this time.



   
 Afternoon: Arrive at Treehaven. Check-in at Main Office between 3:00-5:30 PM.
 Dinner: 5:30-6:30 PM WinterBerry Dining Hall.
 Evening: Meet in Sylvester Auditorium 7:00 PM. Welcome, orientation and introductions.

Day 2: Breakfast; Introduction to space and materials; group instruction and demonstrations; short hike; lunch; open studio time for drawing; dinner; evening program
(Monday, September 22)

Note: Wake up to a hearty breakfast followed by a morning introduction to the space and materials and demonstrations. During this time you will discuss the elements of design, and take a short "seeing" hike on Treehaven grounds. After lunch, there will be open studio time for drawing. Following a delicious dinner, watch an interesting presentation on the art of landscape.

Day 3: Breakfast, Group Instruction and demonstrations on texture and form; Making things look 3D; lunch; value and contrast presentation; dinner; evening program and open studio time
(Tuesday, September 23)

Note: Wake up to a delicious breakfast followed by a morning of group instruction and demonstrations focusing on texture and form. Learn how to make things look three dimensional. After lunch, learn about value and contrast by using lights and darks to sharpen your drawings and render form. After dinner, enjoy open studio time!

Day 4: Breakfast; watercolor basics; play time with paints; lunch; demonstration on watercolor washes; line drawing; dinner; evening movie
(Wednesday, September 24)

Note: After a hearty breakfast, explore watercolor basics and see demonstrations of how to use watercolor materials. This means serious play time with paints! Time to make a mess! After lunch, view demonstrations of watercolor washes followed by a practice session. Then it's open studio time. After dinner, enjoy viewing the film, "microcosmos," in the lounge.

(Thursday, September 25)

Note: Wake up to a delicious breakfast before practicing how to paint hard and soft edges. After lunch, practice watercolor glazing and enjoy open studio time. After dinner, enjoy an evening of more open studio time to practice what you've learned and enjoy camaraderie among others in the group.

Note: After a hearty Treehaven breakfast, enjoy practicing saving the whites and lifting. After lunch, view demonstrations of mixing colors and learn a brief introduction to Color Theory, followed by open studio time. Following dinner, enjoy more open studio time. You will also learn about what to do and where to go during your weekend free time.

Day 9: Breakfast; outdoor painting materials; taking color notes; lunch; dissecting an image and prep for painting outdoors; dinner; open studio time.
(Monday, September 29)

Note: After eating a delicious breakfast, prepare to paint outdoors by learning about outdoor painting materials. This is the morning you will have a trial run of painting outside. After lunch, you will go back outside to learn how to dissect an image and how to paint light to dark using traditional watercolor techniques. Following dinner, there will be more open studio time and information will be given on tomorrow's field trip.

Day 10: Breakfast; Field trip to "Birds in Art" at Woodson Art Museum; Field trip to Eau Claire Dells; box lunch; Drawing on location; dinner; evening of relaxation.
(Tuesday, September 30)

Note: This is a painter's dream come true! After breakfast, you will leave for the "Birds in Art" exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wis. Here you will view original paintings, sculptures and graphics created within the last two years by talented artists from around the world. Afterwards, you will travel to the Dells of the Eau Claire Park. Spend the afternoon enjoying a picnic lunch and painting en plein aire on the edge of the falls. In the evening enjoy "me" time.

Note: Following a hearty breakfast, you will have the opportunity to "challenge" your instructor by asking questions. After lunch, travel to Almon Park at Buck Lake, the largest and most popular day use recreational area in Oneida County. The 80-acre county park offers woodland trails through old age mixed hardwoods, northern bog with a boardwalk and a lakeshore trail.

Following dinner you won't want to miss out on the group show and photography class slideshow. Awards and "artistic licenses" will be presented, followed by a campfire!
