Nestled in southwest New Hampshire, West Swanzey is one of several postcard perfect towns in the Monadnock region. Winding wooded roads through six covered bridges, historic sites and Mount Monadnock itself offer an incredible opportunity to capture its essence in time on canvas. Join us for the first week in September, designed for the beginner to the novice or in June or the second week of September for intermediate to advanced watercolor artists. Our studio is surrounded by the incredible beauty of nature awaiting your presence.

West Swanzey

Nestled in the valley of southwest New Hampshire, West Swanzey is one of several postcard-perfect towns in the Monadock region. Winding roads pass covered bridges, historic sites and the 3,000-foot Mount Monadnock, one of the most popular ascents in New England.

Justine Coleman

A resident of Massachusetts, Justine Coleman is an accomplished watercolor artist and instructor who has held numerous award-winning art shows. A favorite teacher at Pilgrim Pines, Justine has been especially helpful to intermediate and advanced painters in taking the next step in their development.
 
Susan Pecora

The host of the show “Reflections Through Watercolor” on the PBS affiliate station WGBY, Susan Tilton Pecora has painted such diverse subjects as Fenway Park during a Boston Red Sox game and Norman Rockwell's Studio in Stockbridge, Mass. She is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society in Boston, and a former council member of the Academic Artists Association, Copley Society Boston, Cape Cod Art Association and The Provincetown Art Association. Susan primarily works in watercolor, egg tempera and oils, and her work is included in private and corporate collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. Her work has been featured in American Artist magazine, as well as the book, “Splash 7: The Best in Watercolor.” In 2001, 13 of her paintings were used to create a calendar for Farm Aid.

  Description: Tranquil and beautiful, Pilgrim Pines Conference Center is nestled on the scenic shores of Swanzey Lake and it is surrounded by tree laden hills. In this setting, you are invited to relax and be renewed in mind, body and spirit.

Pilgrim Pines is owned and operated by the Evangelical Covenant Church of the East Coast Conference and has been a provided for Road Scholar since 1988. It has been our policy not to allow alcoholic beverages on campus. Smoking is allowed only in designated areas in the out-of-doors. Most Road Scholar classes are presented in our beautiful open-space Meetinghouse while the Undercroft (lower level of our Chapel) and Chapel are used as needed.

  Room amenities: All rooms have private baths, new beds and walk-in showers with liquid soap. Each room has a table, a chair or chairs, a clock, radio, Kleenex, closet and lamps, along with its own heating unit and fans for the summer season.

Since we do not have daily housekeeping services our guests are asked to make their own beds (linens and towels and bath mats provided), and at the end of their stay strip the beds, put the linens and towels in a pillow case and bring to designated location. Replacement linens and towels/washcloths are available upon request during the week.

There are no TVs or phones in any of the rooms. A TV set with full cable access is available in the fireside room adjoining the Mayflower Dining Room. A courtesy phone is available 24 hours a day on the porch of the Mayflower Lodge along with Wi-Fi access in the Meetinghouse or Chapel.
  Facility amenities: Our main class area at Pilgrim Pines is in the Meetinghouse, a beautiful structure with nature views through the windows and capable of holding up to 60 people. Our onsite Chapel which houses a grand piano, pipe organ and video projector is also occasionally used for classroom activities, while the Undercroft is used for our hands-on craft programs.

Meals are served buffet style in our Mayflower Dining Room by full-time professional chefs who not only provide excellent meals with many choices, but also work to create alternate menus for special dietary needs indicated on Participant Information Forms returned prior to the start of the program. The superb quality and consistency of our food service has been a trademark of our Conference Center.

Before or after meals, relax in the fireside room adjoining the Mayflower Dining Room and browse through our small library, enjoy conversation and/or view a favorite program on our one TV set with full cable access. While there are no phones in each room, a courtesy phone is available 24 hours a day on the porch of Mayflower Lodge along with wireless internet access in the Meetinghouse or Chapel. Snacks including fruit are provided each evening in the dining room and juices, soda, coffee and tea are available at any time. Morning coffee and snack is served in the classroom. Additionally Pilgrim Pines features the opportunity to enjoy (weather permitting) the sandy beach, waterfront activities, golf on our 9 hole course, tennis or a hike around the lake all at no additional cost.

Greyhound bus service available from Logan to Keene, NH, Sunday and Friday. Call for price and schedule. Amtrak is available from NYC and other cities to Brattleboro, VT. Pilgrim Pines provides transportation from Keene/Brattleboro. A rental car is option to Thomas Transportation. Enterprise and Avis have drop sites in Keene, NH. Driving Directions
  Boston, MA From Boston, take Highway 2 West to 140 N toward Wincendon, MA. 140N will merge into 12 N in Wincendon. Continue to follow 12 North through Troy, NH. Approximately 2 miles north of Troy you will see a sign for Pilgrim Pines. Continue on 12 North and turn left onto Flat Roof Mill Rd. (If you go by a Honda dealership on your left you missed the turn.) Follow Flat Mill Rd for approximately 4 miles to route 32 (T intersection). At the intersection, turn right onto Route 32 and then take an immediate left onto Swanzey Lake Rd. Follow Swanzey Lake Rd for 2.2 miles and you will come to the dam on Swanzey Lake. Just after the dam, the first road you will see on your right will be East Shore Road. Continue driving 100 yards more to your second right, which will be West Shore Rd (there should be a sign for Pilgrim Pines). Turn right and follow West Shore Road one mile to the Pilgrim Pines sign. Continue 1/4 mile past the sign to the Conference Center. The Mayflower Lodge will be on your left and that is where we will meet and eat.
  Hartford, CT/Springfield, MA From Hartford, CT or Springfield, MA, take Route 91 N to Exit 28A (just N of Greenfield, MA) toward Route 10 North. Follow 10 North through Winchester, NH. Four miles N of Winchester, look for Pilgrim Pines sign. Just before the Ashuelot River, turn right onto Westport Village Road. Continue straight on Westport Village Road for approximately half a mile and then bear right at the fork onto Homestead Ave. Continue for another half mile before taking a right onto Swanzey Lake Rd. Follow Swanzey Lake Road for approximately 1.5 miles, before turning left onto West Shore Rd. Continue one mile to the Pilgrim Pines sign and the Mayflower Lodge - Office will be on your left.
