Don't let the rain fool you, winter is the best season on the Oregon Coast! Celebrate the holidays far from the crowds of summer tourists. Experience the coast alongside locals who will share their fresh-caught Dungeness crab, handmade arts and crafts and stories of winter storms. Gaze upon a bay filled with lighted boats as you participate in a holiday boat parade. Seek your own treasure on the beach in front of your hotel.

Newport (Oregon)

Often called the most “authentic” city along the Oregon Coast, Newport embraces its coastal identity with ample beaches, fishing opportunities and sightseeing along Yaquina Bay. From the art deco architecture of the downtown Deco District to the history of Yaquina Lighthouse, Newport’s character charms residents and visitors alike.



Coos Bay

Marine estuaries, old-growth forests and beaches characterize the natural landscape of this historic port city on Oregon’s South Coast. Coos Bay is close to Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Cape Arago and the fishing port of Charleston.

Roger Unser

A Road Scholar coordinator and instructor since 1998, Lynn Unser and his wife, Carol, have provided more than 30 Road Scholar programs annually. Lynn is adjunct faculty at Lane Community College in Florence, Ore. As a fifth-generation native Oregonian, he has worked in industries with coastal resource bases, including timber, farming and commercial fisheries, experiences which have provided insight for many students into the challenges and rewards of a coastal livelihood.
 
Carol Unser

Carol Johnson Unser has incorporated her love for nature throughout her career as an instructor at the University of Georgia’s Marine Science Center, interpretive coordinator for the National Marine Sanctuaries division of the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration, and estuarine education coordinator for the state of Oregon. In addition to her academic career, Carol is an accomplished artist who has illustrated more than a dozen books, including nature field guides and children’s books.

Driving Directions
  Portland OR From Interstate 5 South: Follow I-5 South to Albany, Oregon. Past Albany, take Exit 228 (Corvallis/Highway 34) and follow Highway 34 west to Corvallis. In Corvallis, follow signs to Highway 20 west (Newport). Follow Highway 20 west to Newport. Once in Newport, turn left (south) onto Highway 101. Watch for SW Fall Street and turn right (west) onto it. If you reach the bridge you have gone too far. Follow SW Fall street to the hotel on Elizabeth Street.

Day 1: Welcome! Orientation and Dinner
(Friday, December 5)
   
 Arrive To: Check in at hotel front desk.
 Afternoon: Welcome orientation will take place in the hotel meeting room at 5 pm.
 Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Oregon Coast Geology, Glassblowing, Explore Newport, Christmas Lighted Boat Parade, Oregon Coast Aquarium
(Saturday, December 6)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant.
 Morning: Learn about the fundamental geology of the Oregon Coast in an engaging presentation. Then head to Lincoln City and begin your glassblowing class.
 Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: We'll board the M/V Marine Discovery for a cruise of Yaquina Bay, the annual Christmas Lighted Boat Parade. Then, we will head over to the Oregon Coast Aquarium to enjoy the Festival of Lights there
 Dinner: Late dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 3: Head south to Florence, Coos Bay, Shore Acres State Park Holiday Lights
(Sunday, December 7)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant.
 Morning: There will be a Natural History program before we check out of your room and depart for Coos Bay. We will stop for a beach walk if weather permits.
 Lunch: Lunch at a Florence Restaurant.
 Afternoon: Explore the south coast as we travel from Florence to Coos Bay. We'll head out to Cape Arago and the amazing botanical gardens at Shore Acres State Park. As twilight settles, the gardens will be transformed into one of the best holiday light displays in the west. Sip cocoa and take in the sparkling festival of lights!
 Dinner: Dinner in Coos Bay.

Day 4: Head north , lunch in Yachats, explore the Hatfield Marine Science Center, Rogue Ale Brewery
(Monday, December 8)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant.
 Morning: Heading back to Newport, we will stop at Cape Perpetua Natural Scenic Area, weather permitting, followed by lunch in Yachats
 Lunch: Lunch in Yachats, one of the west's prettiest towns.
 Afternoon: Discover Seal Rocks and enjoy the crashing winter surf. Back in Newport, we'll check back into our hotel then head to OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center. There we'll explore the exhibits on marine geology, ecology. Next, enjoy a tour of the local headquarters of the Rogue Ale Brewery.Oregon is gaining a world-wide reputation for their craft beers. Rogue Brewery in Newport is at the forefront of the local brewing movement. Tour their brewery and sample their holiday brews.
 Dinner: Dinner and tasting at the Rogue Ale Brewery on the Bay.
 Evening: After dinner, relax in the hotel lobby or your room, listening to the ocean surf or enjoying the fireplace and camaraderie.

Day 5: Estuaries video, Lunch and cooking presentation, Estuary Walk
(Tuesday, December 9)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant.
 Morning: After a video and discussion about Oregon's wonderful and important estuaries, we will head back to Lincoln City to pick up the glass floats each participant has made. An incredibly delicious lunch follows a wonderful cooking demonstration at the Lincoln City Culinary Center
 Lunch: Lunch at Lincoln City Culinary Center.
 Afternoon: After a wonderful lunch, we will walk along the Salmon River Estuary and Cascade Head. This is a wild, beautiful and scenic area being studied as part of a conservation program monitoring the health of the temperate rainforests and watersheds.
 Dinner: Celebrate the last night of the program with a dinner at a local restaurant.
 Evening: Wrap up your week with another relaxing evening at your oceanfront hotel.
