Day 1: Overnight flight from the U.S.A.


Days 2-3: Arrival Zagreb:

Experience Zagreb, a modern capital city that grew out of two medieval settlements on neighboring hilltops, on an expert-led excursion and independently. Lodging: Hotel in Zagreb’s main city square.



Day 4: Coach to Plitvice Lakes National Park:

Stop in Karlovac, a city strategically built in the shape of a six-pointed star to defend against Turkish invaders. Absorb the beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park, the oldest national park in Southeast Europe. Find its 16 colorful lakes and cascading waterfalls and keep an eye out for wildlife including brown bears, wolves and wildcats. Lodging: Hotel within park near the largest lake.



Day 5: Coach to Split to begin main program



Croatia

Flanked by Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia, and other Balkan states, Croatia’s crescent-shaped border reveals the transformative history of foreign invasions and more recent Communist collapse. More than 1,700 tiny inlets and islands sprinkle the nation’s Adriatic coast, while beneath the water’s surface rest shipwrecks and cargo from the Greeks through World War II. Seaside promenades in Split attract admirers, as do the mountains outside Zagreb.

  Facility amenities: The hotel offers 229 units, including 7 suites, 10 semi-suites and 2 handicapped accessible rooms. The hotel lobby bar, as well as the hotel restaurant with its rich and recognizable culinary offer. Our youngest guests will find entertainment in the children's playroom. All hotel rooms are equipped with satellite TV, telephone and Internet connection and washrooms with either a bath or shower. Majority of rooms are equipped with a mini-bar. Additional features available include the whirlpool - massage pool for a maximum of 15 persons and two Finnish and Turkish steam baths, as well as a hairdresser's salon.   Start of Program:
This extension begins with transfers from the Zagreb International Airport to Zagreb Hotel on the pre-program start date You will be staying at Hotel Dubrovnik Zagreb that night.
  End of Program:
This extension ends with transfers from Zadar to the main program hotel in Split You will be staying at Hotel Jezero the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Passport must be valid for 6 months past the program start date, April 21 2013. A visa is not required for US passport holders.

  Train or bus availability: Hotel is 0.5 km away from the Main train station, and about a kilometer away from the Main bus station
To Start of Program
  Location:  Zagreb
  Transportation to site: All participants that booked their air through Road Scholar with be transferred to the pre-program extension hotel. Independent travelers may join the group tansfer if their flight coincides with the group arrival time. There are two scheduled arrival transfers for this program. These transfers are intended for participants who have booked their flights through Road Scholar Travel Services and are arriving on the scheduled program arrival date. LH 6000 FRA-ZAG, Arrives Zagreb 11:30AM 23 September 2014 UA 7276, AMS-ZAG, Arrives Zagreb 1:15PM 23 September 2014 Hotel Dubrovnik is situated on the main square in Zagreb called "Trg Ban J. Jelacic." The hotel is 0.5 km away from the Main train station, and about a kilometer away from the Main bus station. The Zagreb International Airport is18 km away. Taxis are readily available outside the airport. A taxi fare from the airport to the hotel will cost you approximately $33.00 US.

  Transportation from site: All program participants will be transfered from the Plitvice hotel (the last accomodation on the pre-program extension) to the main program hotel in Split.

Day 1: Arrival Zagreb, Croatia
(Monday, September 22)

Note: Arrival and transfer to the hotel involves walking approximately 800 yard from where bus stops to the hotel. Luggage will be taken to hotel by mini bus. Any participants who need help will be taken to the hotel by mini bus



   
 Afternoon: Transfer to Zagreb Hotel
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel
 Evening: Orientation: We will gather in our private meeting room where the Group Leader will greet you with a warm welcome and introduce everyone. We will review the up-to-date daily schedule and any changes, discuss responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have. Please be aware that program activities and scheduled times could change due to local circumstances. In the event of any changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Day 2: Zagreb
(Tuesday, September 23)

Note: In the morning, the visit to Zagreb involves walking at least 2 mile round trip and standing for up to 1 hour.

 Morning: Filed Trip: Discover Zagreb Today's Zagreb has grown out of two medieval settlements that for centuries developed on neighbouring hills. The first written mention of the city dates from 1094, when a diocese was founded on Kaptol, while in 1242, neighbouring Gradec was proclaimed a free and royal city. Both the settlements were surrounded by high walls and towers, remains of which are still preserved.
 Lunch: Lunch on your own.
 Afternoon: Free time to independently explore Zagreb
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel

Day 3: Plitvice Lakes/Discover Karlovac
(Wednesday, September 24)

Note: In the afternoon the visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park requires at least 3 miles round trip of walking and exploring the parks incredible scenery.

 Morning: Filed trip: Karlovac was built in the 16th century as an unique city core formed as a six-pointed star with a purpose of defense from the Turkish conquerors. Besides Karlovac, only two other towns in Europe have similar plans (Palmanova in Italy and Novy Zamk in Slovakia).
 Lunch: Lunch on own in Plitvice National Park
 Afternoon: Field Trip: Plitvice Lakes, Croatia's first National park established in 1949 covers 296.85 km2 of breathtaking natural splendor becoming with it the largest among the eight national parks of the country. The park harbours a grand collection of waterfalls, gallery of lakes, forest and diversity of animal life. The lakes are renowned for their distinctive colors, ranging from azure to green, grey or blue. The colors change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight. The sixteen lakes which are formed by natural dams of travertine are separated into upper and lower lakes

Day 4: Plitvice / Zadar / Split
(Thursday, September 25)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel
 Morning: Field Trip: Zadar an ancient city full of historical and cultural monuments. It is three thousand years old, a city of old, tumultuous and dynamic history, often destructed, looted, devastated, every time emerging from the ruins stronger, richer and more beautiful. Zadar appeared for the first time in history in the 4th century B.C. as a settlement of the Illyrian tribe of Liburnians.`
 Lunch: Lunch on your own.
 Afternoon: Bus departs Zadar to Split. Check in Split hotel.
 Dinner: Join the new arrivals of your main program group (20118 - Best of Croatia) for a welcome dinner at the hotel.
