Spend a week reading and discussing “The Divine Comedy,” the masterpiece of one of history’s greatest poets, Dante Alighieri. Local in its allusions, medieval in its presuppositions and timeless in its insight, this inexhaustibly rich text explores the human condition on a path to redemption that leads from the murky depths of Hell to the shimmering vision of the Holy Trinity. As expert instructors lead you through the most important cantos of Dante’s great classic work, learn about the Florence of Dante’s day and delve into Alighieri’s treatment of limbo , the seven deadly sins and the notions of Hell, Purgatory and Heaven. Outside of the classroom, venture into and around Jerome to experience its unique history, culture and natural beauty.

Highlights

• Study one of history’s greatest poets in a quiet, rural, monastic setting and read his masterwork with three experts on medieval religion and literature and other participants who share your interest in the poem.
• Explore the concept of limbo by viewing the film version of the novel “In the First Circle” and on a visit to Minidoka National Historic Site, where World War II-era Japanese-Americans were imprisoned.
• Discover paradise on earth at an artisan cheese factory, in the scenic Thousand Springs area, on a visit to a family-run creamery, at Shoshone Falls and on a boat ride and picnic in the Snake River Canyon.
