A necessity for good health, fresh water is often a luxury for many people in remote locations. Help to make a difference in the lives of an entire Nicaraguan village as you assist in projects that will ensure fresh water and sanitation. Under the direction of El Porvenir, a nonprofit organization supporting self-help development in rural Nicaragua, build a latrine or village washing facility. Your efforts will create clean water and sanitation facilities that reduce disease, resulting in healthier families.

• Learn about Nicaraguan health care firsthand as you visit the primary doctor at a local health clinic.
• Explore the idyllic islands of Lake Nicaragua during a field trip by boat.

No prior construction experience required. Participants work to their ability level. Transportation to sites by 4x4. Elevations of 1,000-3,000 feet.

Spend a day in Managua and enjoy field trips to the National Palace, the President's House, Plaza of the Republic and the Peace Park. Meet Nicaraguans from different walks of life as they tell you about their work. In El Sauce, work alongside families in local villages to screen sand, mix and pour concrete, transport bricks or stones, lay brick or block and plant tree seedlings. On field trips, visit a school, health clinic, the mayor’s office and more.

Venture by boat to the Isletas de Granada, an archipelago of more than 300 islets rich in bird and animal life just offshore of Lake Nicaragua. Journey to San Juan de Oriente to see the work and studio of a local potter. At the Convento de San Francisco, explore an archaeological exhibit of pre-Columbian figures, then delight in the natural wonders of Masaya Volcano National Park.




Nicaragua

After declaring its independence from Spain in 1821 and briefly a part of the Mexican Empire, this agricultural economy has become renowned for its strong folklore, music and religious traditions. Locked between Honduras and Costa Rica, the people of Nicaragua reflect the Indian and Spanish-European heritage, among others, and is home to over 450 volcanic origin islands, including the world's largest volcanic lake island, Isla Ometepe.

  Start of Program:
upon arrival - Managua, Nicaragua. You will be staying at Hotel Lomas del Valle that night.
  End of Program:
upon departure - Managua, Nicaragua. You will be staying at Hotel Lomas del Valle the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Valid Passport. Entry visa $10 purchased at airport. Please use clean, US currency with no cuts or tears.
  Required innoculations:
Yes: A current tetanus shot is required. A prescription intestinal antibiotic such as Septra or Bactrim is suggested, in case of an unpleasant encounter with Nicaraguan microbes

Day 2: History talk; tour of Managua; travel to El Sauce.
(Sunday, October 19)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel.
 Morning: Orientation and a talk on Nicaragua's past, present, and future.
 Lunch: Lunch in a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: Tour Managua. In Managua, the group will visit the National Palace, the President's House, the old and new cathedrals, Plaza of the Republic, and the Peace Park. After lunch, travel to El Sauce..
 Dinner: Dinner at hotel.
 Evening: Free time and settle into hotel.

Day 3: Meet El Porvenir staff and community members; begin project; see some completed projects and learn of their impact.
(Monday, October 20)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel
 Morning: Travel to worksite. Brief orientation and begin work on water/sanitation project.
 Lunch: Lunch in the community
 Afternoon: Field trip to visit other El Porvenir projects.
 Dinner: Dine at the hotel with local El Porvenir staff. Question and answer time about project work, life in the countryside, and other topics of interest.
 Evening: Free time to rest & relax after a long day

Day 4: Project work with community members; visit local health center and learn about local health care.

 Morning: Work in the morning.

 Afternoon: Visit the local health clinic, meet the main doctor, and learn about Nicaraguan health care.
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel.

Day 5: Continue project work; visit to mayor's office.

 Afternoon: Visit Mayors office to learn about municipal government in Nicaragua
 Dinner: Dinner at hotel.
 Evening: Evening swim.

Day 6:
(Thursday, October 23)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel
 Morning: Continue work on water/sanitation project.
 Lunch: Lunch in community
 Afternoon: Visit the Mayor's office and learn about El Sauce's history and local government.
 Dinner: Dinner at hotel.
 Evening: Enjoy a music and dance performance by a local group. Traditional songs and traditional dance performed.

Day 7: Farewell party with community, travel to Leon.

 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel
 Morning: Continue working on the project, then "Despedida" (good-bye party) with the community to celebrate the project and new friends.
 Lunch: Lunch in the community
 Afternoon: Depart El Sauce for Leon. Walking tour of Leon Cathedral, and the city center.
 Dinner: Dinner at local restaurant.
 Evening: Enjoy beautiful architecture of the old city.

Day 8: Crafts market; Las Isletas boat tour
(Saturday, October 25)
   
 Depart From: Leon, travel to Granada. Lunch and browsing at the Masaya Craft Market.
 Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel.
 Afternoon: Exploration by boat of small islands in Lake Nicaragua with free-time afterwards to explore Granada.
 Dinner: Dinner at local restaurant.

Day 9: Strolling tour of Granada; Visit Masaya Volcano
(Sunday, October 26)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in hotel
 Morning: Strolling tour of Granada, including the San Francisco Convent Cultural Center. This museum offers a nice collection of historical objects, paintings, and statues. The museum is located in a colonial house with a beautiful inner courtyard.
 Lunch: Lunch in local restaurant
 Afternoon: Field trip to Masaya Volcano National Park or Chocoyero -El Brujo Natural Reserve.
 Dinner: Farewell dinner in Managua.
 Evening: Time to pack and say good-byes.
