From scenic coves, rugged cliffs to lighthouses, salmon farms and fishing weirs — paddle through the Bay of Fundy’s natural and man made wonders! The bay’s nutrient-rich waters are both a play and feeding ground to minke, fin, humpback and North Atlantic right whales, harbour seals, porpoise, basking sharks and a multitude of seabirds. Spend four half-days kayaking and a half-day visiting a puffin colony (June) or whale-watching (August) amidst this spectacular sea life and splendid scenery.

This program includes a half day trip to a nesting puffin colony to go ashore in blinds. Fantastic photo op.... it is the only puffin colony on the east coast where you can actually go ashore.




Grand Manan Island

The largest island in the Grand Manan archipelago is internationally renowned as a bird watcher's paradise and from spring to autumn still teems with the species of birds that enchanted J.J. Audubon in 1833 when he visited the islands.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. A passport is required for all air travel to/from Canada. On June 1, 2009, a new US law known as the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will require those traveling to/from the United States by land and sea to also have a passport or other appropriate secure document (NEXUS card). Pick up & drop off available at any accommodation in Saint john, as well as airport, bus terminal, etc. Actual driving time to ferry 1 hour, extra time allowed for probable multiple pick ups. Ferry ride is 1 & 1/2 hours. Please indicate if service is required in the appropriate place in advance materials.

  St. Stephen or Saint John Route 1 from St. Stephen/Calais border crossing approximately 30 miles east to Black's Harbour exit, or Route 1 from Saint John approximately 50 miles west to Black's Harbour exit; 5 miles to village of Black's Harbour, follow signs to ferry dock; no ticket office at Black's Harbour ferry dock (purchase ticket upon return only) join line up; first come, first served; arrive at ferry line up at least one hour prior to desired departure time; advance ticket available from Grand Manan only; approx. cost $50.00 Cnd. for two adults and passenger vehicle, round trip; ferry schedule provided with information package; may view online also at www.coastaltransport.ca; ferry trip is one and on half hours; modern ferry with cafeteria on board.

 Evening: Orientation in Annex Lounge; Marine Mammals & Seabirds slide/lecture format

Day 2: Kayak Introducton, Puffins, Sunset at The Whistle
(Monday, June 23)

Note: Board and disembark vessel. Standing and walking.



   
 Breakfast: At inn: hot or cold cereal; fruit; hot entree (cook's choice; changes daily)juice;cofee;tea
 Morning: Land based intro to sea kayaking at Marathon Inn and pool; focus on safety equipment and techniques.
 Lunch: Bag Picnic Lunch
 Afternoon: Travel by converted lobster boat to Machias Seal Island to visit a nesting puffin colony. This is a truly unique experience as participants go ashore to view puffins from blinds. Strict sanctuary rules enforced.
 Dinner: At inn: set appetizer & dessert (made fresh daily); choice of fresh catch of the day or meat entree daily; preorder each day after breakfast
 Evening: Sunset at the Whistle. Sunset, birds, lighthouses and marine mammals from this cliff top perch, high above the Bay of Fundy.

Day 3: Kayaking, Fisherman's Wharf, "Introduction to Grand Manan"
(Tuesday, June 24)

Note: 3-hours on the water in a kayak.

 Morning: 3-hour introductory paddling field trip with expert instruction and guides. Marvel at a vast untapped coastline that is constantly transformed by some of the largest tides in the world. 400 ft cliffs, hundred of sea birds, whales and seals are only some of what you will see as you spend the morning exploring.
 Lunch: At inn
 Afternoon: Guided walk of Fisherman's Wharf: an expert led tour of a working facility with insight into the day to day activities of the local fishing industry. Visit a small whale & seabird research station.
 Dinner: At inn: set appetizer & dessert (made fresh daily); choice of fresh catch of the day or meat entree daily, preorder after breakfast each day.
 Evening: Intro to Grand Manan: slide/lecture format

Day 4: Kayaking, Nature Walk (optional)

 Morning: 3-hour paddling field trip with expert instruction and guides.  Lunch: Bag lunch provided by inn
 Afternoon: Free Afternoon or option of a guided nature walk

 Evening: Pelagic birds & more marine mammals slide/lecture format

Marvel at a vast untapped coastline that is constantly transformed by some of the largest tides in the world. 400 ft cliffs, hundred of sea birds, whales and seals are only some of what you will see as you spend the morning exploring.
 Lunch: At inn
 Afternoon: Guided visit to Grand Manan Museum (includes fisheries & geology exhibit); also home of of the renowned Alan Moses bird collection; many local cultural artifacts.
 Dinner: At inn: set appetizer & dessert (made fresh daily); choice of fresh catch of the day or meat entree daily, preorder after breakfast each day.
 Evening: Free evening

Day 6: Lifestyle and Culture of a Fishing Community
(Friday, June 27)

 Morning: Field trip to visit and learn about various aspects of the fishing industry past and present, reflecting the culture and lifestyle of a fishing island. Visit lobster pounds, smoked herring stands, dulsing operations, boat building,salt fish operation, visit a small fishers' supply store.

 Afternoon: Afternoon free
 Dinner: Choice of lobster or steak dinner
 Evening: Graduation and Farewell Get Together
