New Year’s Eve belongs to Times Square but New Year’s Day is all California’s and Pasadena’s with the Tournament of Roses Parade! Welcome the new year and celebrate Road Scholar’s 40th anniversary by attending the annual Rose Parade and delight in the tradition and pageantry of magnificent floral floats, high-stepping equestrians and spirited marching bands.

• Learn the fascinating history of the parade from a Tournament of Roses insider and hear from a past Rose Queen about her reign.
• Attend Bandfest to watch and listen to prize-winning bands performing field shows.
• Become a part of the spectacle as you help decorate one of the elaborate Rose Parade floats, attend the parade itself and view floats up close at the Post Parade.

Tommy Cairns

Dr. Tommy Cairns is an internationally renowned rose expert and an award-winning rose exhibitor. He’s a frequent judge at international rose shows and has served as a Tournament of Roses Parade judge and also as the judges’ instructor for that organization. Tommy is the author of “The Ultimate Rose Book” and a current editor of World Rose News. At his Studio City home, the Scottish-born Cairns enjoys almost 1,000 rose bushes, which he competitively exhibits on an international level.

Program registration starts after 3:00PM which is also the hotel check in time. You will be staying at Hilton Woodland Hills Hotel that night.

Please make travel arrangements so you can go on the field trip to “Post Parade: A Showcase of Floats”, an opportunity to see the floats in close detail. Buses return to the hotel at approx. 11:00AM. You will be staying at Hilton Woodland Hills Hotel the night before.

Also let us know if you are traveling with other individuals and wish to be assigned a room near them. Day 1: Independent Arrival/Orientation/Introductions
(Sunday, December 28)

Note: For organizational purposes, we will assign participants to one of seven groups. If you are traveling with other individuals, please be sure to identify those individuals on the enclosed Participant Information Form.



   
 Afternoon: HOTEL CHECK-IN: Check into the Hilton Woodland Hills after 3:00PM

PROGRAM REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, come to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet which we'll review during our orientation session before dinner.

ORIENTATION: We'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures and any other administrative issues as well as answer your questions. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes, we will notify you as quickly as possible. We appreciate your understanding.

 Dinner: Dinner at hotel

Menus are contracted for the program and are designed to offer balanced, healthy meals for the participants. This program offers two choices for meals: standard and vegetarian. Due to the large number of participants, they are unable to customize menus for individuals. However, we have found that by requesting sauces and dressings to be served on the side, we are able to accommodate various food intolerances and allergies. Vegetarian meals must be requested in advance on your Participant Information Form. Unfortunately, there are no other special meal options. Participants with special dietary needs should be prepared to avoid certain foods or supplement the regular meal plan as needed.

 Evening: CROSSING POINTS: Participants introduce themselves to the rest of the group.

Enjoy the remainder of the evening getting to know your fellow participants and discovering what you share beyond a love of lifelong learning.

Day 2: Former Rose Queen/Bandfest
(Monday, December 29)

Note: Since seats are not assigned, it is recommended we arrive early for Bandfest. This requires standing in line until the stadium is opened. To reach seats, one needs to climb a flight of stairs and then go down stairs to seats. (Elevator is available in rear of the stadium.) At Bandfest, our metal bleacher seats have backs. You may bring a stadium cushion since we will be seated for several hours.

 Morning: CLASS: A former Rose Queen shares her personal story about the Rose Queen selection process and responsibilities.

DVD: "Here Comes the Band" ~ Take a look at how high school bands get into the Rose Parade. Follow the application and selection process and the fundraising activities necessary to support their desire to participate in the ultimate parade.

 Lunch: Lunch at hotel
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP AND PERFORMANCE: Attend Bandfest which features the prizewinning bands of the 2015 Rose Parade performing the field shows that made them famous. See these talented musicians, dancers and auxiliary performers in action.
 Dinner: Dinner at hotel
 Evening: CLASS: Presentation by Community Relations Committee member of Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, on the Tournament of Roses Parade and the ‘White Suiters’, the 935 volunteers who work to ensure the success of the parade and football game.

Day 3: Float Decorating
(Tuesday, December 30)

Note: We have agreed to work a minimum of 6 or a maximum of 8 hours (depending upon the float organization) plus a lunch break. Expect to stand while working on floats as directed by float organizers because seating is limited in the float area. Some float decorating will require an early morning departure from hotel.

 Morning: FIELD TRIP AND HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE: Day-long float decorating activities

Come and experience the magic of the Rose Parade floats before New Year's Day! Help prepare the materials used to make the floats and decorate some of these magnificent floral floats in their final stages of preparation for the Rose Parade. We will be standing most of the time as we perform whatever tasks are assigned to us by the float decorating organizations.

Day 4: Getty Center/New Year's Eve Dinner
(Wednesday, December 31)

Note: The Getty Center art collection is displayed in four buildings, three of which have two floors; the fourth building has three floors. There may be temporary exhibits in two other buildings. Optional guided docent walks of art, architecture or gardens last about an hour. Elevators are available. The amount of walking is determined by interest level. Access to the Getty Garden involves a slight incline.

FIELD TRIP TO THE GETTY CENTER

The Getty Center presents J. Paul Getty's collection of Western art from the Middle Ages to the present against a backdrop of dramatic architecture, tranquil gardens, and breathtaking views.

Explore the museum and grounds on your own or join one of the public tours.

 Lunch: To give you greater flexibility in viewing the Getty Center collection at your leisure, lunch will be on your own.

Located in the Restaurant/Cafe building, the Restaurant offers full service in an elegant setting with views of the Santa Monica Mountains. Menus change seasonally. Reservations are recommended. Call (310) 440-6810.

The self-service Cafe at the Getty Center is located on the lower level of the Restaurant/Cafe building and has indoor and outdoor dining areas. The extensive menu includes sandwiches, soups, salad, pizza, tacos, burritos, and grilled items. Wine and beer are also available.

The smaller Garden Terrace Cafe offers coffee, lunch, and snacks in an outdoor setting overlooking the Central Garden.

Due to our early morning departure on January 1st for the Tournament of Roses Parade, we will celebrate New Year's Eve early according to the Eastern Time zone.

Day 5: Tournament of Roses Parade
(Thursday, January 1)

Note: Buses depart the hotel for the parade at 6:15AM. Participants will climb bleachers to get to seats. The metal bleacher seats do not have backs. Because the bleacher rows at the Parade are close to each other, seats with backs are discouraged because such seats restrict the leg room for people sitting behind you. You may bring a stadium cushion since we will be seated for several hours.

 Morning: FIELD TRIP TO THE TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE

The 126th Rose Parade, presented by Honda, will take place Thursday, January 1, 2015, starting at 8AM (PST). The parade features spirited marching bands from throughout the nation, majestic floral floats, and high-stepping equestrian units. The Grand Marshal of the 2015 Tournament of Roses festivities will be announced later in 2014.

Our motor coaches leave the hotel at 6:15AM, the morning of the Parade. Our reserved bleacher seats are in front of Pasadena City College at 1570 E. Colorado Ave.

 Afternoon: Enjoy a free afternoon to explore the area on your own, take a nap, watch the Rose Bowl game on TV, or watch reruns of the Tournament of Roses Parade on TV with commentary.

Public transportation is available to downtown LA.

If you are interested in attending the Rose Bowl Game, you will be responsible for purchasing your own ticket(s) and arranging transportation to the Rose Bowl and back to the hotel after the game.

Day 6: Post Parade: Float Viewing/Independent Departure
(Friday, January 2)

Note: Buses depart hotel for Post Parade at 6:15AM. Total R/T walking distance from bus to all around the Post Parade Float Viewing Area is 2.4 miles. From bus, walk includes 80' elevation loss in first 0.7 mile. Terrain is level for the next mile of Float Viewing. Return to bus includes 80' elevation gain in last 0.7 mile. Allow twice as much time to get back up the hill as it takes to go down. Walking distance determined by interest level. No benches btwn bus and Post Parade or in Post Parade area.

 Morning: FIELD TRIP TO THE POST-PARADE SHOWCASE OF FLOATS

After every Rose Parade, the floral masterpieces are parked along Sierra Madre and Washington Boulevards in Pasadena and exhibited for visitors to walk by and examine in close detail the design and workmanship that goes into these floats. Visitors are able to walk almost within arm's reach of the floats and appreciate for themselves the creativity and imagination of the floral displays. This has been a Pasadena tradition for over 100 years. Don't forget your camera!

 Afternoon: EXTEND YOUR STAY: Consider joining us on #20161, a 4 day program titled Extension: Los Angeles Beyond the Facade.

HOTEL CHECK OUT: Our program concludes when we return to the hotel at approximately 11:00AM. It is best that you check out of your room and bring your luggage down to the front desk before the Post Parade trip.

Arrange your transportation from the hotel to the airport in advance via SuperShuttle to both Burbank and LAX. Considering traffic and airport lines, we do not recommend booking your return flight before 2:00PM.
