Geology of the Pacific Northwest

Peel away the earth and discover its story. You will do just that – with field studies of the geological record of the great ice age floods that created the topography of the Pacific Northwest. Class involves minimal walking to observe rock formations on site – equivalent to less than two city blocks on pavement and dirt road.

David Douglas in the Northwest 1824-34

This romp through Scottish naturalist David Douglas’s eventful life will include time spent tracing his travel routes around the world as well as gentle walks enjoying the flora and fauna that he saw in the Pacific Northwest.

20th-Century American Popular Music

This musical journey will feature the songs of Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and more. Why do these songs stay with us? What is their magic? How did the songwriters put them together? These are a few of the questions that will be explored.

Newport (Washington)

Situated near the Canadian border in northeastern Washington State, Newport offers easy access to the region's bountiful scenic and recreational opportunities. The north-flowing Pend Oreille River once captivated early explorers and has long hosted local wildlife such as elk, bears, ospreys and eagles.

Contemporary resort-style lodge overlooking a glacier-carved lake has tastefully furnished guest rooms with private bath. Lake views, custom furnishings and knotty pine accents add to the charm.
