Program intended for grandchildren from 13 - 17 years of age.

Learn to paddle by canoe, kayak and raft with your grandchildren down the Delaware River, the longest free-flowing river in the eastern U.S. It’s a perfect location for an introduction to boating skills and water safety. Discover the high ridges of the Delaware Water Gap, where the river cuts through the Poconos. Explore new segments of river on different watercraft with experts in the local geography and biodiversity.

Shawnee on Delaware

This quaint, historic village is situated amid the sylvan beauty of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area at the foothills of the Pocono Mountains in eastern Pennsylvania, just 75 miles from New York City.

Cindy Miano

Cindy Miano retired in 2004 from a career in elementary education where she taught fourth grade and served as a language Arts chairperson. In addition to managing Shawnee Institute Road Scholar programs, Cindy is a personal trainer and life coach. She practices Pilates, yoga and various strength training programs, and helps to promote wellness plans for individuals while helping them to achieve overall good health.
 
Leslie Underhill

An avid student of yoga for the last seven years, Leslie Underhill has combined her love of the discipline with her enthusiasm for teaching. In 2004, she opened the studio Yogannamaste, and recently opened a bed and breakfast where she teaches yoga to guests. In addition to taking her classes to businesses and schools in the area, Leslie also teaches yoga to cancer survivors at the Pocono Medical Center. She is certified in spanda yoga and is classified as an ERYT 200.
 
Steve Wootton

Steve Wootton is a native of England who served for several years in the British army. In 2000, he traveled to the United States and hiked several hundred miles of the Appalachian Trail. Steve and his wife lead overnight canoeing and hiking trips in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. He is a certified Life Guard, First Aid Responder and Ski Patroller.
 
Rick Koval

Rick Koval is a longtime resident of Luzerne County and a professional naturalist, consultant, wildlife photographer and award-winning outdoor writer. He was the director of land conservation for the North Branch Land Trust before becoming the head naturalist for Skytop Lodge in the Poconos. Rick is a local television personality as a naturalist on the popular show, “Pennsylvania Outdoor Life.” He is currently writing a book on the native orchids of the Poconos.

Driving Directions
  From the East: I-80 West Take PA Exit 310, Delaware Water Gap (immediately after toll bridge, first exit in PA). Then take the next right exit to the PA Welcome Center. At the TRAFFIC LIGHT, proceed straight through on River Road. Go under overpass and over railroad tracks. At stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road for approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  From the North: I-84 West Take Exit 46, Milford. Turn left toward Milford at the stop. At the traffic light in Milford, go straight through and on to US Route 209 S. Follow 209 South for about 25 miles. Just past the traffic light at the elementary school, make a LEFT turn on Hollow Road. Go 4.0 miles (pass Shawnee Mountain) until Hollow Road intersects with River Road at the Shawnee Playhouse. Turn RIGHT onto River Road. The entrance to Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is 1/4 mile on your LEFT.
  From the South: I-95 North I-95 N TO I-476 N. (I-76 N, then I-476 N if coming from Philadelphia Airport). On I-476 N go to US-22 E, to US-33 N, then I-80 E to PA Exit 310, Delaware Water Gap. Turn LEFT at the TRAFFIC LIGHT on River Road. Go under the overpass, and over the railroad tracks. At the stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort will be on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  From the West: I-80 East Take I-80 E to exit 310, Delaware Water Gap. Make a LEFT at the TRAFFIC LIGHT on River Road. Go under overpass and over railroad tracks. At stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road for approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  Note for all: Once you are at the entrance to the Resort, pass the gate house and continue straight over the bridge. The main parking lot will be on your left. You may either drive around to the front of the Inn and park temporarily under the portico while your check-in, or you may park at the main lot first, and enter the hotel through the rear entrance. Bell porters are available at either place if you need help with your luggage.

Day 1: Check-in, registration, orientation, welcome dinner, after-dinner lecture.
(Sunday, August 3)
   
 Arrive To: Check in at front desk for hotel room. An Road Scholar registration desk will be in the lobby of the Inn
 Afternoon: Meet Shawnee staff and fellow explorers for a program orientation.
 Dinner: Join Road Scholar participants and staff for a Welcome Dinner.
 Evening: Water safety talk and tips on reading the river.

Day 2: Complete instructional paddling program on a glacier lake featuring instruction in canoes and kayaks

 Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast at River Room
 Morning: Instruction
 Lunch: Picnic Lunch
 Afternoon: Craft Class
 Dinner: Dinner at the Inn
 Evening: A cultural history talk given by a National Park Ranger
   
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Rafting skills clinic, guided river trip, hiking, evening skills class.
(Tuesday, August 5)

Note: Rafting 4 miles on easy, calm water. Guided hike is 2 miles, on trail with some rocky and rugged sections, elevation gain of up to 1000 ft; guided nature walk is 2 miles, smooth and level.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the River Room.
 Morning: River paddling excursion with our naturalist
 Lunch: Lunch at the Inn.
 Afternoon: Young people will enjoy a guided trail hike, while adults take a more leisurely guided nature walk.
 Dinner: Buffet dinner at the Inn.
 Evening: Attend a campfire

Day 4: Kayaking skills clinic, guided river trip, yoga, evening concert
(Wednesday, August 6)

Note: Kayaking 6 miles on mostly calm water, some exposed rocks and short sections of Class I rapids.

 Morning: Guided river trip
 Lunch: Lunch at the Inn.
 Afternoon: A yoga stretching class to relax sore muscles, followed by a canoeing skills class.
 Dinner: Buffet dinner at the Inn.
 Evening: Concert on the front lawn.

Day 5: Canoeing skills clinic, guided river trip, lunch on the river, free time afternoon and evening, night hike with our naturalist.
(Thursday, August 7)

Note: Canoeing 10 miles on mostly calm water, with some stretches of Class I rapids and exposed rocks. Easy eddy swim.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the River Room.
 Morning: Guided river trip
 Lunch: Pull out of the river for a picnic lunch along the way.
 Afternoon: River trip continues, with a stop for a swim and a rock jump. Free time for remainder of the afternoon.
 Dinner: Buffet dinner at the Inn.
 Evening: Night hike with our naturalist
