Program intended for grandchildren from 13 - 17 years of age.

Learn to paddle by canoe, kayak and raft with your grandchildren down the Delaware River, the longest free-flowing river in the eastern U.S. It’s a perfect location for an introduction to boating skills and water safety. Discover the high ridges of the Delaware Water Gap, where the river cuts through the Poconos. Explore new segments of river on different watercraft with experts in the local geography and biodiversity.

Driving Directions
  From the East: I-80 West Take PA Exit 310, Delaware Water Gap (immediately after toll bridge, first exit in PA). Then take the next right exit to the PA Welcome Center. At the TRAFFIC LIGHT, proceed straight through on River Road. Go under overpass and over railroad tracks. At stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road for approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  From the North: I-84 West Take Exit 46, Milford. Turn left toward Milford at the stop. At the traffic light in Milford, go straight through and on to US Route 209 S. Follow 209 South for about 25 miles. Just past the traffic light at the elementary school, make a LEFT turn on Hollow Road. Go 4.0 miles (pass Shawnee Mountain) until Hollow Road intersects with River Road at the Shawnee Playhouse. Turn RIGHT onto River Road. The entrance to Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is 1/4 mile on your LEFT.
  From the South: I-95 North I-95 N TO I-476 N. (I-76 N, then I-476 N if coming from Philadelphia Airport). On I-476 N go to US-22 E, to US-33 N, then I-80 E to PA Exit 310, Delaware Water Gap. Turn LEFT at the TRAFFIC LIGHT on River Road. Go under the overpass, and over the railroad tracks. At the stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort will be on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  From the West: I-80 East Take I-80 E to exit 310, Delaware Water Gap. Make a LEFT at the TRAFFIC LIGHT on River Road. Go under overpass and over railroad tracks. At stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road for approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  Note for all: Once you are at the entrance to the Resort, pass the gate house and continue straight over the bridge. The main parking lot will be on your left. You may either drive around to the front of the Inn and park temporarily under the portico while your check-in, or you may park at the main lot first, and enter the hotel through the rear entrance. Bell porters are available at either place if you need help with your luggage.

Day 1: Check-in, registration, orientation, welcome dinner, after-dinner lecture on Water Safety
(Sunday, July 20)
   
 Arrive To: Check in at front desk for hotel room. An Road Scholar registration desk will be in the lobby of the Inn
 Afternoon: Meet Shawnee staff and fellow explorers for a program orientation.
 Dinner: Join Road Scholar participants and staff for a Welcome Dinner.
 Evening: Water safety talk and tips on reading the river.

Day 2: Complete instructional paddling program on a glacier lake featuring instruction in canoes and kayaks
(Monday, July 21)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at River Room
 Morning: Kayak Instruction
 Lunch: Picnic Lunch
 Afternoon: Canoe Instruction
 Dinner: Dinner at the Inn
 Evening: Mountain Survival Training Class
   
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Guided river trip, scenic waterfall walk and picnic lunch, evening concert, campfire
(Tuesday, July 22)

Note: Rafting 4 miles on easy, calm water. Guided walk to view a beautiful waterfall.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the River Room.
 Morning: Meet at the Canoe Base for a 4 mile river rafting trip.
 Lunch: Picnic lunch
 Afternoon: We will enjoy a guided nature walk to a scenic waterfall
 Dinner: Buffet dinner at the Inn.
 Evening: Star Gazing on the campus of the Shawnee Institute. Learn about Astronomy and take advantage of the beautiful night sky

Day 4: Kayaking trip, yoga class, picnic and swimming in the evening
(Wednesday, July 23)

Note: Kayaking 6 miles on mostly calm water, some exposed rocks and short sections of Class I rapids.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the River Room.
 Morning: Set out for an exciting kayaking trip down the Delaware River with our Naturalist. Learn about Dragon Flies, Butterflies and edible plants.
 Lunch: Picnic Lunch with our Naturalist
 Afternoon: Finish kayaking trip
 Dinner: Buffet dinner at the Inn.
 Evening: Family game night at the Inn

Day 5: Canoeing skills clinic, guided river trip, lunch on the river, free time afternoon and evening, night hike with our Naturalist
(Thursday, July 24)

Note: Canoeing 10 miles on mostly calm water, with some stretches of Class I rapids and exposed rocks. Easy eddy swim.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the River Room.
 Morning: Today we will paddle canoes on a beautiful 10 mile stretch of the Delaware. We will also have the chance to get in the river and enjoy a cooling Eddy swim.
 Lunch: Pull out of the river for a picnic lunch along the way.
 Afternoon: River trip continues, with a stop for a swim and a rock jump. Free time for remainder of the afternoon.
 Dinner: Buffet dinner at the Inn.
 Evening: Night hike with our naturalist

For 40 miles the Middle Delaware River passes between low forested mountains with barely a house in sight. Then the river cuts through the mountain ridge to form the famed"Water Gap."
