Program intended for grandchildren from 8 - 12 years of age.

The love of animals transcends generations and this adventure into the animal kingdom will allow you and your grandchild to learn about Oregon’s fantastic creatures. Get up close with animals as you apply your new animal tracking skills, visit an elk farm, and learn how injured birds and wildlife are rehabilitated. Pet an alligator and meet a wallaby. Then go behind the scenes at the Oregon Zoo for a night-time Safari. ...all while forging bonds in a true animal-lover’s city.

  Start of Program:
Hotel check-in begins at 3:00 PM. Program registration begins at 4:00 PM in the lobby, followed by introductions at 5:00 PM. You will be staying at Crowne Plaza Hotel- Downtown Convention Center (Portland) that night.
  End of Program:
9:30 AM after a wrap up session. Hotel check-out by 12:00 PM. You will be staying at Crowne Plaza Hotel- Downtown Convention Center (Portland) the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. All participants are required to complete an Intergenerational Rules and Regulations Form and the White Wolf Sanctuary Photography and Release and Hold Harmless Agreement Form. In addition, Young Learners also need to return the Parental Consent Form (one per child) and The Oregon Zoo Emergency Information form (in order to participant in the behind-the-scenes zoo activities) and the Old McDonald's Farm permission slip. PLEASE RETURN ALL FORMS TO THE ROAD SCHOLAR OFFICE IN ADVANCE OF THE PROGRAM. We will turn the forms in as a group. Signed liability release waivers are required by insurance carriers from all participants due to the activities on this program.

Day 1: Welcome to Portland! Check in and get to know each other/Orientation/Stuffed animal activity
(Sunday, July 20)
   
 Arrive To: Hotel check in begins at 3:00 PM. Program registration begins at 4:00 PM in the hotel lobby. Introductions will begin at 5:00 PM followed by dinner at 5:30 PM.

Get acquainted with the program at the orientation.

 Dinner: Get to know your fellow participants as you enjoy a great meal at the hotel.
 Evening: Make a stuffed animal companion at a workshop after dinner. Take him with you on your learning adventure and let him be a reminder of the wonderful time on this trip!

Day 2: Critter Cabana Presentation/Reptile Presentation/ Oregon Zoo Behind the Scenes
(Monday, July 21)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel
 Morning: Start off the day getting acquainted with some unique creatures! Gain valuable educational information about the importance of reptiles in ecological diversity, suitability as pets and the safe and humane way to handle and care for them during Hart’s Reptile Presentation. Meet turtles, albino boa constrictor, and many other reptiles in Hart’s Reptile care.

Later, meet the incredible mammals such as chinchillas, bunnies, sugar gliders, hedgehogs and others. Learn about their life, diet, and habits!

 Lunch: Lunch at hotel.
 Afternoon: This evening will be late when we return from our Zoo Safari, so we'll take a couple hours in the early afternoon to get in a good swim or rest.

Then in later afternoon head out to the Oregon Zoo and explore on your own for about an hour before dinner and our evening Safari.

 Dinner: Dine at the zoo in preparation for your behind the scenes activities.
 Evening: Visit Portland's remarkable Oregon Zoo for an after-hours experience. See the animals that are most active after the sun goes down.

Day 3: Animal Tracking Workshop/Picnic and Naturalist Walk at Oxbow Park/ Travel to the Beach
(Tuesday, July 22)

Note: Oxbow Park naturalist walk will be on unpaved and uneven roads in the park. If you choose to sit this activity out, you can do so in the covered shelter area by the river.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: Join our naturalist in a hands-on exploration of animal tracking. Learn how to use claw marks, toes, heel pads and webbing to identify animals in the wild in this interactive workshop.
 Lunch: Head out to the Oxbow Regional Park and enjoy a picnic lunch.
 Afternoon: Apply your newly acquired skills of animal tracking as you walk with a naturalist at the Oxbow Park. Gain an insight into animal and bird behavior in the wild, see how many animal prints you can identify!

Get ready for the trip to the beach, our bus will take us to Newport, Oregon where you will stay the night.

 Dinner: Arrive at the Oregon beach just before dinner time.

Dinner is on your own to give you time to explore this beautiful area. Walk down to he tide pools, or have a bonfire on the beach.

Join your Group Leader for dinner or they will be happy to suggest some free time activities or other dinner locations.

 Evening: Enjoy the lovely sunset at the beach, walk in the sand or just relax and get ready for a full day tomorrow!

Day 4: Some Free Time at the Beach/Marine Science Center/ White Wolf Sanctuary/Travel to Portland
(Wednesday, July 23)

Note: While at the White Wolf Sanctuary expect to walk on unpaved and uneven surfaces. You may stay on the deck at the house and still see the wolves.



   
 Breakfast: Hot breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: Hunt for seashells, dig in the sand or run on the beach! You'll have a little free time in the morning to explore the beach on your own!

Then, head to the Hatfield Marine Science Center to discover the rocky inter tidal habitat and the creatures that live there. Handle snails, sear urchins, barnacles, crabs and sea anemones. Learn about the environmental forces that make this ever-changing habitat a challenging place to live.

 Lunch: At Izzy’s in Newport.
 Afternoon: Travel to the White Wolf Sanctuary where you will meet 9 wolves who have come to the sanctuary from a variety of circumstances, and now are able to live out their lives in a safe and happy environment. Learn about the arctic wolves, their habits and instincts from Lois Tulleners, the owner of the sanctuary.

 Dinner: Delicious menu at Ruby Tuesday in Corvallis awaits.
 Evening: Will be spent traveling back to the hotel.

Day 5: American Wildlife Foundation/ Elk Farm and Petting Zoo/ Riverside Picnic/Animal Storyteller
(Thursday, July 24)

Note: During the visit to the elk farm and the American Wildlife Foundation, expect to walk on unpaved and uneven surfaces.



   
 Breakfast: Enjoy breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: Head out into the lush, hilly Mollala area to explore a hidden treasure. Meet a wildlife veterinarian who has built a rehabilitation sanctuary for wounded birds and animals. See how they treat and care for them.

Meet Cyrano the vulture and enjoy a presentation on "Owls, Silent Hunters of the Night." Get your questions ready as the vet be excited to hear what you are wondering!

 Lunch: At Feyrer Park nearby, enjoy a picnic lunch along the riverside.
 Afternoon: We'll then join our experts at Rosse Posse, at their elk farm. The Ross family will help us bring the elk up close with grain. Don't forget to look off in the distance for a stunning view of Mount Hood!

Explore the handling facility and the barn, with its walls covered with antlers and horns. Discover fascinating antler facts in our presentation and then make your own antler necklace!

Head over then to the Petting Zoo where very friendly small animals are waiting to greet you...pygmy goats, miniature donkeys, a miniature horse and chickens! Have a good chase around the petting zoo with them.

 Dinner: Dinner will be served at the hotel.
 Evening: After dinner, a very special storyteller will tell you things you never knew about your favorite animal friends.
