The wilderness of Yosemite is an arresting gem in any season, and the drama of its landscapes may be no better appreciated than in the glistening quiet of winter. In this Queen of the National Parks, where snow transforms already famous views into breathtaking spectacles, local experts and National Park Service professionals will lead you by snowshoe to views, valleys, meadows and groves rarely seen by the average winter visitor. Along the way, a sports instructor and Yosemite historian will be on hand to provide a culturally and naturally rich adventure while safely leading your skiing and snowshoeing exploits in the park. This unforgettable journey concludes lunch at the historic Ahwahnee hotel followed by a historical tour of the acclaimed property.

Activity Particulars

Snowshoeing acclimation hike up to eight miles on wide, well-traveled, packed snow paths; elevation gain around 400 ft with beginning elevation at 5,000 ft. Second snowshoe hike off the maintained trail, into Yosemite back country with possibility of powder snow and rolling hills. Elevation gain around 300 ft. with beginning elevation over 7,000 ft. and up to eight hours outside in potentially freezing temperatures on all field days.



All rental equipment included in program. Consider bringing water resistant snow boots, pants, jacket and gloves.

With Yosemite National Park and the expansive Sierra Nevada just out the backdoor, Oakhurst is an active community and gateway to the region’s many natural splendors, including fine hiking trails and native wildlife.



Accommodations
Clean, comfortable, rustic conference center on 162 forested acres, walking trails on-site. Rooms are without televisions or telephones. Main lodge offers TV, telephone, wifi, guest fridge, lounge areas, wood stoves, billiard table and views overlooking a forested pond.

  Description: Program begins with registration 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Please do not plan to arrive before 2:00 PM or later than 6:00 PM. (Sleeping rooms may not be available until 4:00 PM.) You are asked to check out of your sleeping rooms by 9:00 a.m. on Friday; however program ends after lunch.

  Facility amenities: In keeping with our tranquil retreat setting, you are not disturbed by the distraction of televisions or telephones in sleeping rooms. Satellite TV is available in the main lodge, as well as a recreation room with ping pong/game tables. Our "Fourth Green" Recreation Complex features fields for basketball, volleyball, football/soccer and horseshoes. Walking/hiking trails on-site and nearby, including a self-interpretive nature trail on ECCO grounds. The towns of Oakhurst, Bass Lake, North Fork and Mariposa feature a number of fine arts galleries and museums. Bass Lake offers swimming/boating opportunities 5 miles from ECCO.

ECCO highly recommends renting a vehicle if at all possible, for free time options. ECCO shuttle is available only on program opening/closing days; maximum capacity is 4 persons. Elevation Note: Conference Center: 3,100 ft. Max elevation of field trip: 7,800 ft.

Equipment Requirements: Snow shoes, cross country ski equipment, and downhill ski equipment are included in program. Guests get a choice of two of the three mentioned sports.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival between 3 to 5 p.m. - Welcome to our home!/Get-Acquainted Social Hour & Orientation
(Monday, January 27)
   
 Arrive To: We're delighted you've decided to join us. Please plan to arrive between 3 to 5 p.m. (Not earlier than 2 p.m., please, nor later than 6 p.m.--our staff is available to assist you during those hours only.)
 Afternoon: Make your way to Lyles Dining Hall at 5 p.m. for a get-acquainted social hour and brief orientation. We'll get to know each other, and our staff will answer all of your questions. It is our pleasure to make this a comfortable and memorable experience.
 Dinner: Dinner in Lyles Hall at 6:00 p.m. Dinner features a delicious main entrée of beef, chicken, fish or pasta, along with potatoes or rice, vegetables, salad bar, rolls and dessert. Please note that only one entree selection is served per meal. All meals are served buffet style so choose what appeals to you and come back for more! Dinner is served until 6:20 p.m., and we regret we're not able to save plates for late arrivals.
 Evening: After dinner, we will have the remainder of our orientation session followed by introductions and a short award-winning video, "The Spirit of Yosemite." The balance of the evening is left free for you to relax after your day's journey. Cards, games & puzzles are available for your enjoyment.

Day 2: Snowshoe in the grand Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias inside Yosemite National Park.
(Tuesday, January 28)

Note: Mariposa Grove is at an elevation of 5,000 ft. Throughout the snowshoe walk there will be less than 1,000 feet in elevation gain. The walk may cover up to 8 miles with a difficulty rating of 1 and 2 (on a scale of 1-3 with 1 being easiest.)



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in Lyles Dining Hall and pack your own sack lunch. An ECCO breakfast buffet may include French toast, waffles or pancakes accompanied by sausage or bacon. Standard items include eggs, hot/cold cereals, fruits, toast or muffins and yogurt.
 Morning: Depart on the bus to Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. As a group we trek with a Park Ranger from the entrance of the park to the grand grove of ancient trees. Everyone gets to try their knack for snow shoes while adjusting to exercise at over 5,000ft above sea level.
 Lunch: Enjoy a sack lunch while surrounded by the beauty and serenity of Yosemite in the winter
 Afternoon: Continue the snowshoe walk while learning about the ecology of the Giant Sequoias. Learn about the early explorers and the Native American who once thrived in the area.
 Dinner: Dinner at ECCO in Lyles Dining hall overlooking our pond.
 Evening: Evening program - Each evening's program may consist of a video,a live birds of prey presentation, a living history presentation, stories from Yosemite or a sing-a-long. Each program is approximately 45 minutes long.

Day 3: Bus tour of Yosemite Valley with interpretation by a Park Ranger. Lunch is provided at the world famous Ahwahnee hotel.
(Wednesday, January 29)

Note: This tour allows guests to rest after a fun filled day of snowshoeing. The second half of the day includes free time to explore Yosemite Valley.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in Lyles Dining Hall
 Morning: Board bus for Yosemite Valley. Bus departs at 9:00 a.m. or as soon as everyone is aboard. Your instructor/field trip guide continues interpretation of the cultural and natural history of the are, as you travel. The drive from ECCO is approx. 1-1/2 hours over a winding road. Motion sickness medication may be helpful so you can fully enjoy and appreciate the beauty of the Queen of National Parks. Even if you've been to Yosemite before, you'll see the park's glory with new eyes--enlightened by the passion and knowledge of our superb instructors. Stops will be made at Tunnel View (that famous first glimpse of Half Dome), Bridalveil Falls, Sentinel Bridge and Yosemite Lodge.
 Lunch: Enjoy lunch at the world famous Ahwahnee hotel in the heart of Yosemite Valley
 Afternoon: After lunch your field trip guide will lead you on a tour of the magnificent Ahwahnee Hotel, where you'll marvel at the architecture, the basketry displays and the history inherent within its walls. If you'd prefer to explore other areas (such as the Ansel Adams Gallery, Indian Village & Museum, Visitor's Center, Yosemite Falls, etc., your group leader will assist you in planning your afternoon. Arrive at the appointed meeting place at the time designated by your group leader to board the bus for return to ECCO. Stops will be made along the way at Gates of the Valley and Tunnel View. You will arrive back at ECCO between 5 and 5:30 p.m.
 Dinner: Dinner at 6:00pm in Lyles Dinning Hall.
 Evening: Evening program - Each evening's program may consist of a video,a live birds of prey presentation, a living history presentation, stories from Yosemite or a sing-a-long. Each program is approximately 45 minutes long.

Day 4: Getting into the pristine back country, choose to Snowshoe or cross country ski at higher elevations.
(Thursday, January 30)

Note: Guests should be prepared to exercise at elevations that range from 7,000 to 8,000ft. Unless one opts to downhill ski, guests should expect a more strenuous day with grand rewards of spectacular view.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in Lyles Dining hall and pack your own sack lunch
 Morning: After lunch depart on our bus to Badger Pass. The drive is approx one hour on winding country roads. Once at Badger Pass, each individual in the group may choose one activity for the day. Choices include snowshoe a moderately challenging course to a vast view of Yosemite Valley from the south rim, cross country ski to a pristine meadow and possibly an overlook, or downhill ski at Yosemite's Badger Pass ski area. All rentals and passes are included.
 Lunch: Eat your sack lunch while enjoying the solitude and untouched beauty of Yosemite's back country.
 Afternoon: Continue the guided winter adventure and meet back at the bus at the predetermined time. Expect to arrive back at ECCO between 5:00 and 5:30pm. Share photos and stories while returning to ECCO.
 Dinner: Dinner at 6:00pm in Lyles Dining Hall
 Evening: Evening program - Each evening's program may consist of a video,a live birds of prey presentation, a living history presentation, stories from Yosemite or a sing-a-long. Each program is approximately 45 minutes long.

Day 5: Top off an action-packed week with discussion time with our Park Ranger. Discuss current issues that our parks and wilderness are facing.

 Breakfast: Breakfast in Lyles Dining hall at 8:00 am.
 Morning: In a classroom, discuss current park challenges. Share your experiences and discuss the role we play in preserving and utilizing wilderness and parks.
 Lunch: 11:30am lunch in Lyles Dining Hall and depart.

  Oakhurst, CA Antiques & Art Galleries
A variety of antique stores and art galleries offer shopping/browsing opportunities in Bass Lake and Oakhurst, both about 15 minutes from ECCO.
  Bass Lake
About 15 minutes from ECCO, Bass Lake offers opportunities for fishing, swimming and relaxing.
  California Mining & Mineral Museum
In Mariposa, about 30 minutes from Oakhurst. One of the finest gem and mineral museums in the country.
  Glacier Point
Glacier Point is a view of Yosemite not to be missed, and, except on rare occasions, we can't take you there. (Large buses are not permitted.) The drive is one and a half hours each way but well worth the effort. For additional information, visit www.nps.gov/yose
  Golf
Oakhurst boasts 2 golf courses, about 15 minutes from ECCO.
  Mariposa History Center
In Mariposa, 30 minutes from Oakhurst. This is a marvelous exploration of central California's early years.
  Nelder Grove
About 7 miles from ECCO, this is your opportunity to get up-close-and-personal with some ancient giant sequoias. Shadow of the Giants is an easy one-mile walking trail.
  Sierra Mono Museum
In North Fork, 30 minutes from oakhurst. This Indian-owned and operated museum features one of the finest collections of Indian basketry around.
