Mark McNett is a 17-year veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and had been a homicide detective in Las Vegas for the last five years. He is recently retired and loves to share stories about his very interesting career with Road Scholar participants.

A variety of shuttle services are available at McCarran Airport; they are located on the west side of baggage claim, outside door exits 8-14. Please note that there are both group shuttle and stretch limousine services for hire. Prices may vary due to increase in fuel prices. You do not need to call the shuttle services in advance for transportation from McCarran Airport to your hotel. For return service from Harrah's to McCarran Airport you must make reservations with the shuttle service.

  I-15 Northbound to Harrah's Take exit 38 for Flamingo Rd, Keep right at the fork, Follow signs for Flamingo Rd East and merge onto Flamingo Rd. (heading east), turn LEFT on Kovol Ln., stay to the left, follow signs so Harrahs, Turn LEFT at the first light after Winnick Ave. (there is no street name on this light), stay to the left and follow signs to Harrahs self park or Valet.
  I-15 Southbound to Harrah's Take exit 39 for Spring Mountain Rd. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for Spring Mountain Rd EAST and merge onto Spring Mountain Rd. Continue onto Sands Ave, Turn RIGHT onto Koval Ln, stay to the right, Turn RIGHT at the first light (there is no street name on this light), stay to the left, and follow signs to Harrahs self park or Valet.
  Las Vegas Blvd. (heading North) to Harrah's If you are going north on the Las Vegas Blvd ("The Strip"), there is an entrance to the Harrah's parking garage on the right, after Imperial Palace and before you pass Harrah's.
  McCarran Airport to Harrah's Head southeast on Wayne Newton Blvd toward Airport Departures. Wayne Newton Blvd turns slightly left and becomes McCarran Airport Connector/Swenson St. Continue to follow Swenson St. Turn LEFT onto Harmon Ave, Turn RIGHT onto Koval Ln, stay to the left, and follow signs to Harrahs, Turn LEFT at the first light AFTER Winnick Ave. (there is no street name on this light), stay to the left and follow signs to Harrahs self park or Valet.

Day 1: Hotel Check-In / Road Scholar Check-In / Orientation / Group Dinner / Free Evening
(Monday, November 10)
   
 Arrive To: Arrival and Check-in Instructions: When you arrive at Harrah's Las Vegas, please check in at the hotel's front desk for your room key. Road Scholar Check-In: Between 4-5pm, find the Mardi Gras Tower/Convention Center elevators (next to Mings Table Restaurant). Take the elevator to the 2nd floor, and a representative of UNLV will be at the Road Scholar Check-In table by the elevators. Pick up your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule we will review during Orientation, and to confirm the time and location of the Orientation session. *Be mindful when looking for the Mardi Gras Tower Elevator, as there are escalators and elevators that that go to the wrong areas. Be sure to take the MARDI GRAS TOWER/CONVENTION CENTER ELEVATORS. Do not go to the Carnival tower, the Promenade, or the escalator labeled Monorail, Toby Keith Restaurant, parking garage, or showrooms. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet at the front desk when you check-in.
 Afternoon: Please be aware that program activities and scheduled times may change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.
 Afternoon: 5:00pm - Orientation – Meet your guide and take a closer look at our plans for the next 4 days. We will review the up-to-date daily program and any changes, discuss responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have.
 Dinner: Dinner buffet at Harrah's, after orientation.
 Evening: Free Time: We do not schedule any week-night evening activities, with the exception of the Farewell Dinner (Thursday). Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. If you are interested in attending any of the many entertainment activities and would like to make arrangements before you arrive, entertainment information can be found on the Internet by accessing www.lasvegas.com. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions or give directions.

Day 2: Canine Unit / Forensic Dentist / Arson Investigation Lectures / Free Evening
(Tuesday, November 11)

Note: This is a full classroom day with minimal walking.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.
 Morning: Lecture and demonstrations with a working K-9 Unit team. Learn what it takes to train the extremely keen senses of the K-9 unit, and meet one of these disciplined, yet friendly dogs.
 Morning: "The Role of the Forensic Dentist" Learn the role forensic dentistry plays in the identification of victims and analysis of bite pattern injuries.
 Lunch: Lunch at the UNLV Dining Commons
 Afternoon: Working professionals and members of the International Association of Arson Investigators walk you through the basics of arson investigation while providing personal experiences and reviewing actual arson cases.
 Dinner: Dinner is NOT provided tonight, allowing you the chance to explore all the Las Vegas culinary world has to offer.
 Evening: Evening: At leisure

Day 3: Retired LVMPD Detective Lecture
(Wednesday, November 12)

Note: This is a full classroom day with minimal walking.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.
 Morning: "Homicide Investigation: Myth vs. Reality" - A retired LVMPD Homicide Detective will guide you through the basics of homicide investigating while providing plenty of personal experiences and reviewing actual homicide cases. More than a few myths will be busted along the way!
 Lunch: Lunch at the UNLV Dining Commons
 Afternoon: Continue with LVMPD Homicide Detective and learn about Case Studies and Tools of the Trade.
 Dinner: Dinner buffet at Harrah's
 Evening: Evening: At leisure

Day 4: Police Department Crime Lab Staff Member Lecture / Farewell Dinner
(Thursday, November 13)

Note: This is a full classroom day with minimal walking.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.
 Morning: "Blood Pattern Analysis and DNA" Listen as a working Henderson Police Department crime lab staff member explains how blood patterns can determine what took place before the police arrived and how DNA can be used to bring the guilty to justice.
 Lunch: Lunch at the UNLV Dining Commons
 Afternoon: Fingerprinting hands-on experience and presentation on modern day fingerprinting methods by a Henderson Police Department staff member.
 Dinner: Farewell Dinner is a plated 3-course meal with choice of entrée plus coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.

Day 5: Detention Center Field Trip / Departure Day
(Friday, November 14)

Note: Field trip involves easy walk through facility, on level surfaces. Facility is also wheelchair accessible.

 Morning: Field trip - Guided tour through the Henderson Detention Center. See where criminals end up when they get caught!
 Morning: Return to the hotel by 11:00am, for check-out

  Container Park
Downtown Container Park is an exciting sustainable shopping attraction in downtown Las Vegas -- the hub for an assortment of small boutiques, galleries, bars, eateries and outdoor spaces as well as entertainment and education programming. Marking the entrance of Downtown Container Park is a 55-foot-tall steel praying mantis sculpture built atop a dump truck. On special occasions, you’ll be able to see “The Mantis” in its full glory – shooting flames from its antennae. There is no on site parking at Downtown Container Park. Individuals with disabilities may use the 10 minute loading zone in front of Downtown Container Park for pick-up and drop-off.   Dancing Fountains of Bellagio
Watch more than 1,000 dancing fountains choreographed to the music of Celine Dion, Frank Sinatra, Bocelli, Pavarotti and more entertain the masses. Shows are Mon-Fri at 3pm and Sat-Sun at 12pm and continue every half hour until 6pm and then every 15 minutes until 12am at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino, 3600 S.   Fall of Atlantis Fountain Show
The Fall of Atlantis fountain show will captivate you with its stunning special effects. Located inside Caesars Palace in the Forum Shops, next to The Cheesecake Factory, the free fountain show uses lifelike animatronic figures to recount the myth of Atlantis. Every hour on the hour Sunday - Thursday, 10 a.m. - 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. - midnight. Also worth a look is the amazing salt water aquarium that comprises the show's platform. You can watch as a diver feeds the tropical puffers, flounder, sharks and the rest of the aquarium's inhabitants each day at 1:15 and 5:15 pm at Caesars Palace Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, 3570 S.   Fremont Street Experience
The Fremont Street area of Las Vegas is located Downtown, just north of the famed Vegas Strip. Fremont Street dates back to 1905, when Las Vegas itself was founded. Fremont Street was closed to vehicle traffic in September, 1994 to begin construction on the Fremont Street Experience. The massive entertainment venue is home to Viva Vision, a spectacular light and music show with a 550,000 watt sound system and over 12.5 million lights projecting onto a 500-yard-long canopy 90 feet above the ground. Viva Vision truly makes Fremont Street a prime attraction for tourists and locals alike. Nightly shows run every hour on the hour beginning at 8:00pm - midnight and last for approximately seven minutes. The many hotels, casinos, and stores which open onto the Fremont Street Experience can keep you busy all night.   Volcano at the Mirage
In front of the Mirage Hotel & Casino you will find a peaceful dormant-looking volcano. But beginning at 6pm each evening, this volcano blows its top in a show-stopping eruption reaching over 54 feet tall. The lava flows freely down the sides of the volcano into pools of water and fire, surrounded by gorgeous waterfalls and tropical floral life and continues to erupt every 15 minutes until midnight.
