From FDR to Obama: The Modern American Presidency

An examination of both domestic and foreign policy decisions made by presidents from the 1930s to the present. How have those presidents been viewed by the American public and how have they been evaluated by the historical community?



Religion and the Civil Rights Movement

Look at the role religion played in the United States civil rights movement during the 1950s and 1960s. We will consider well-known and not-so-well-known leaders, some who used religion to support the movement and some who used religion to oppose it.



The Sacred Scriptures of Jews and Christians

The course will use a widely used guide to the Hebrew Bible and Christian New Testament to present a comprehensive and coherent overview of two of Western civilizations most important sacred documents.




Daytona Beach

The World's Most Famous Beach attracts nearly eight million vacationers each year. Daytona also boasts a thriving automobile racing tradition, year-round golf, and a host of cultural and recreational opportunities for both indoor and outdoor enthusiasts.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Completed health form returned to Program Coordinator prior to arrival. Valid photo ID such as driver's license.

Driving Directions
  From North and South I-95 to the Daytona Beach exit (Highway 92). Go east on 92 till you reach Atlantic Ave. Turn right. Hotel on left about 3 miles.
Equipment Requirements: There is no equiment needed for this program other than your lively spirt, thirst for knowledge, good attitude, and desire to have a good time and meet some great people.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Registration, ice breaker, meeting new people, and getting ready for a week of wonderful programs and activities!
(Sunday, February 9)
   
 Afternoon: Registration will begin at 4:00 pm in the Tiki Room (downstairs). Once everyone has registered we will do a get acquainted session to get everyone up, moving, and meeting new people. After registration and the get acquainted session - we will have our opening banquet upstairs in Trader's Restaurant. After dinner we will go back downstairs and have our orientation.
 Dinner: Opening banquet will be held in Trader's Restaurant.
 Evening: Orientation will be held at approximately 7:00 pm. We will go over the contents of the program folder and schedule for the week. The Professors (if they are available) will speak for a few minutes and get everyone affiliated with the week's programs. The rest of the evening is yours to get settled, relax, and get you ready for a week of wonderful programming.

Day 2: Classroom learning with wonderful professors or instructors.
(Monday, February 10)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in Trader's Restaurant.
 Morning: In this Road Scholar program we offer 2 programs in the morning of different academic nature. The three classes you will be enjoying today are: "From FDR to Obama: The Modern American Presidency"", "Religion and the Civil Rights Movement", and "The Sacred Scriptures of Jews and Christians" The specific schedule will be available at orientation. Remember to bring a sweater as the classrooms are normally chilly. This schedule is subject to change without notice.
 Lunch: Lunch will be enjoyed in Trader's Restaurant. Please inform us of any dietary needs you might have. Thank you!
 Afternoon: Your afternoon schedule will be based on our instructor's schedules. If they can only teach in the afternoon than you will have an academic class in the afternoon. There are some instructors that can only teach in the evenings. If this is the case then you will have 2 classes in the morning, your afternoon free and an evening class.  Breakfast: Breakfast will be held in Trader's Restaurant.
 Morning: We will have 2-3 academic classes on Friday morning. Please check your schedule. After our classes we will have lunch and then graduation.
 Lunch: Closing lunch and graduation will be in Trader's Restaurant.
