On the historic golf haven of Jekyll Island, learn from top teaching pros and play on Georgia’s largest public golf resort. Learn to fine-tune your grip, proper alignment, improve your short game and more. After a day on the course, pull up to the bridge table and sharpen your skills in the most challenging aspects of the game.

Familiarity with open bids and responses, overcalls and advances, take-out double, forcing bids, leads and signals required. Set hands and trial duplicate sessions.

Jekyll Island

One of Georgia’s southernmost barrier islands, Jekyll Island has a storied past. At the turn of the century, it hosted an exclusive club that attracted the likes of the Astors, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts. Much of that world is preserved in a historic district near the riverfront. Today, the island is popular for golfing, fishing and kayaking.

Driving Directions
  I-95 to Jekyll Island By Land On I-95 take Exit 29 onto Highway 17/82 North for 6 miles to the Jekyll Island Causeway (State Road 520). Proceed on the Causeway East 5 miles to the Jekyll Island collection station ($6 park entry fee). Proceed over the bridge and take the first left U turn. Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival and Check-in / Registration / Welcome Dinner / Orientation
(Sunday, November 16)
   
 Afternoon: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar desk in the lobby to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet containing your name tag, the up-to-date schedule, and other important information we will review during Orientation, and to confirm the time and place of the session. If you arrive late, please pick up your packet at the front desk.
 Dinner: A delicious dinner will be served in a banquet room at the historic Jekyll Island Club. The Club Hotel is Jekyll Island's only four-star resort and National Historic Landmark. Enjoy elegant surroundings and simple pleasures. Its impressive members included such luminaries as J.P. Morgan, William Rockefeller, Vincent Astor, Joseph Pulitzer and William K. Vanderbilt. Other recognizable names on the roster were Macy, Goodyear and Gould.
 Evening: Orientation will follow dinner. We will discuss program details and activities for the week. It’s time to start discovering why bridge is a famous game. We’ll give you a little overview of what you can expect over the next few days as well as covering our welcome greetings and introductions in addition to reviewing the up-to-date daily schedule. We will also discuss responsibilities and review safety guidelines according to emergency procedures with questions and answers as needed. Please be aware that program activities and scheduled times could change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Day 2: Golf Instruction/18 holes of golf/Advanced Bridge
(Monday, November 17)

Note: Standing and swinging clubs required for morning instruction; carts provided for afternoon play.



   
 Breakfast: Wake up to a tasty, healthy “Good Morning” Breakfast in the Grand Dining Room, including: seasonal fresh fruits, scrambled eggs, cold cereals, assorted flavors of yogurt, bacon, dried fruits, sausage, oatmeal, "Home Fries", grits, and a Daily Special Breakfast Entrée. Homemade Danish, Muffins and Biscuits come fresh from the Bakery. Your server will be happy to prepare your toast, bagel or English muffin. The Club Buffet includes freshly ground coffee as well as a selection of hot teas, milk (whole, 2% or skim) and an assortment of juices. The Grand Dining room is beautifully restored in Victorian mode and features Ionic columns and gleaming white woodwork. Three handsome fireplaces add cheer on Winter days. In Spring, the lawns and the river seen through expansive windows frame the first blossoms of crepe myrtle and magnolia trees.
 Morning: Depart for Jekyll Island Golf facility instruction begins around 9:00 a.m. Short game will be the emphasis of the clinic. Group instruction includes putting, chipping and full swing, etc.
 Lunch: Lunch at the golf course grill.
 Afternoon: Jekyll Island has been a golf destination since 1898, when Jekyll Island Club members added the first course on the island. Today, Jekyll Island boasts 63 holes of golf on three 18-hole courses and one 9-hole course. The 18 hole courses are Pine Lakes (renovated in 2002), Indian Mound (named after the oyster shell middens left by native peoples), or the popular Oleander (on the grounds of the 34th oldest course in the US. The group will play 18 holes of golf.
 Dinner: A delicious dinner will be served in a banquet room at the historic Jekyll Island Club. The Club Hotel is Jekyll Island's only four-star resort and National Historic Landmark. Enjoy elegant surroundings and simple pleasures.
 Evening: This program is for ADVANCING-level players, designed to upgrade your bridge game by adding conventions and logic to your partnership understanding. Familiarity with opening bids and responses, overcalls and advances, take-out double, forcing bids, leads and signals is required. This evening we’ll explore the Two-Over-One Bidding System, a popular variation of the Standard American bidding system. We’ll study the Forcing One Notrump response, a principal component of 2/1. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of these systems to determine if the 2/1 system might be worthwhile for you. We’ll learn through playing, analyzing and discussing sample bridge hands.

 Morning: Depart for Jekyll Island Golf facility instruction begins around 9:00 a.m. About a 10 minute drive. Short game will be the emphasis of the clinic. Participants will work on putting, chipping and full swing, etc.
 Lunch: Lunch at the golf course grill.
 Afternoon: The group will play 18 holes of golf.
 Dinner: A delicious dinner will be served in a banquet room at the historic Jekyll Island Club. The Club Hotel is Jekyll Island's only four-star resort and National Historic Landmark. Enjoy elegant surroundings and simple pleasures.
 Evening: Doubles, Doubles and Redoubles is our theme this evening following dinner. How can we best compete when our opponents open the bidding? We’ll continue to play sample hands that explore takeout doubles, negative doubles and redoubles to help us reach our best contract. Then we’ll explore other doubles including lead-directing, penalty, responsive and support doubles.

Day 4: Advanced Bridge - Free afternoon
(Wednesday, November 19)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the Grand Dining Room.
 Morning: This morning we’ll explore Major Suit Responses including conventions experts might use such as Bergen Raises, Jacoby Two-Notrump, Drury and splinter bids. We’ll continue our learning through play and analysis of sample hands. Our hands will include challenging play techniquessuch as the end play.
 Lunch: A delightful lunch will be served at the hotel.
 Afternoon: Free Afternoon suggestions - This will give you the opportunity to visit neighboring places such as Brunswick, Darien, or St. Simon's Island to see other areas of Georgia's Golden Isles. Bicyclists will also enjoy the 25 miles of bike paths Jekyll offers.
 Dinner: Dinner on your own and free evening.

 Morning: Depart for Jekyll Island Golf facility instruction begins around 9:00 a.m. About a 10 minute drive. Short game will be the emphasis of the clinic. Group instruction icludes putting, chipping and full swing, etc.
 Lunch: Lunch at the golf course grill.
 Afternoon: The group will play 18 holes of golf.
 Dinner: A delicious dinner will be served in a banquet room at the historic Jekyll Island Club. The Club Hotel is Jekyll Island's only four-star resort and National Historic Landmark. Enjoy elegant surroundings and simple pleasures.
 Evening: This evening we’ll explore a variety of conventions that are typically seen at bridge tournaments. For example, we’ll explore Ogust and Weak Jump Shifts with our use of “weak twos”. Then seek to recognize the difference between New Minor Forcing and Fourth Suit Forcing. We’ll consider 1430 as an alternative to Blackwood and explore when we might use Gerber. Our enjoyment of playing, analyzing and discussing sample bridge hands will also include defensive techniques such as choice of the most effective lead and signals.

Day 6: Breakfast/Advanced Bridge

 Morning: Put everything you've learned together through a summary of the week before the program ends at 10:30 a.m. Hotel check-out is at noon. Jekyll Island's Historic District has several speciality shops as well as the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, once the clubhouse for many of America's elite business men. Other areas of interest located near Jekyll Island are St. Simons Island, home to several historic places including Fort Frederica, Bloody Marsh Battle site, etc. There are also other interesting islands located near Jekyll Island including Sapelo Island where you will find a plantation once owned by R. J. Reynolds and Cumberland Island home to many wild horses. Other areas of interest near Jekyll Island include Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, an old rice plantation and Brunswick Georgia which has many historic buildings and landmarks as well as several antique shops. Jekyll Island is located approximately one hour south of Historic Savannah Georgia.
