Rob Ellison

Rob Ellison grew up in Hilton Head, and graduated from Mercer University where he played tennis. After a career in Denver, Colo., as a stockbroker, he returned to Hilton Head to teach tennis clinics at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. PTR certified, Rob has coached numerous tennis teams, including the 2004 state champion women's USTA and several champion Hilton Head High School teams. Rob won the regional Banana Open 4.5 singles division in 2010, and played on state championship adult United States Tennis Association (USTA) league teams in 2011.

  Start of Program:
Check in at the Omni Oceanfront Resort between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. Program registration will be held in the hotels conference center. The evening meal and orientation will follow. You will be staying at Omni Oceanfront Resort that night.

Check out by 11:00 AM. You will be staying at Omni Oceanfront Resort the night before.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. The only required document is a photo ID such as a driver's license.

Driving Directions
  From Interstate 95 Directions to our Hotel Driving Direction from North or South take I-95 to Exit #8. Take Hwy 278 East for 25 miles towards Hilton Head Island. After crossing the Island bridge, continue on Business 278 to Palmetto Dunes, which is located on the left hand side 8 miles from the Island bridge. Make a left hand turn at traffic light into Palmetto Dunes, and after one mile you will arrive at a guard gate. State that you are a guest of the Omni Oceanfront Resort and obtain a pass and continue. The Resort is located on the left side. No motorcycles permitted.
Elevation Note: Hilton Head is just above sea level.

Equipment Requirements: Tennis rackets, tennis balls and any comfort items such as hats, bug spray, sunscreen, etc. you consider necessary.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrive on Hilton Head Island and check into the Omni Resort. Dinner and orientation will follow.
(Sunday, January 26)
   
 Afternoon: Arrive at Omni Oceanfront Resort for registration and room assignment between the hours of 4:00 and 5:00 pm. Program packets will be issued at this time. Further instructions will be given during program registration.
 Dinner: A plated dinner will be served at 6:00 PM followed by orientation.

Day 2: Tennis Instruction-Groundstrokes & Volleys /Tennis Play/Overview of Hilton Head's History
(Monday, January 27)
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy the Full-American Breakfast Buffet at the resort's HH Prime restaurant which includes selections from the following menu (some options available in season): assorted cereals, assorted low-fat yogurts, granola, assorted dried fruits: raisins, apricots, pineapples, fresh sliced fruit: honeydew, pineapple, cantaloupe, berries: blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, creamy grits, steel cut oatmeal, breakfast potatoes, apple wood smoked bacon, blueberry sausage, special blend sausage, blend sausage links, fluffy pancakes, waffles, French Toast, scrambled eggs with cheese, assorted bagels, muffins, breads, pastries, Gluten Free English muffins and breads, sunflower honey-nut bread, made-to-order omelet Station, as well as orange juice and coffee.
 Morning: Palmetto Dunes Resort is the ultimate destination for anyone who wants to improve his or her tennis skills. At the Tennis Center you'll find 23 clay and 2 Nova ProBounce courts (eight of which are lighted for night play). There's also a helpful, energetic staff whose primary goal is to make your week a rewarding one. Begin with lateral movement groundstrokes with emphasis on strokes, balance, and placement as well as lateral and forward movement volleys emphasizing strokes and placement. Play 'live ball' drills with groundstrokes and volleys.
 Lunch: Lunch will be served at Big Jimís, located in the Robert Trent Jones Clubhouse across from the Tennis Center. Big Jimís offers a relaxed setting for players in between sets.
 Afternoon: Group will play afternoon tennis as part of the program.
 Dinner: A plated dinner will be served in the resort's conference center.
 Evening: This evening's program will present to you an timeline overview of Hilton Head Island. Hilton Head Islandís history can be traced back to Native American occupation 4,000 years ago. Learn about the islandís past including the Plantation Era, Civil War and the modern development into a world-class resort destination and home to 30,000 full time residents.

Day 3: Tennis Instruction - Net approach/Transition into the net /Tennis Play
(Tuesday, January 28)
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy the Full-American Breakfast Buffet at the resort's HH Prime restaurant which includes selections from the following menu (some options available in season): assorted cereals, assorted low-fat yogurts, granola, assorted dried fruits: raisins, apricots, pineapples, fresh sliced fruit: honeydew, pineapple, cantaloupe, berries: blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, creamy grits, steel cut oatmeal, breakfast potatoes, apple wood smoked bacon, blueberry sausage, special blend sausage, blend sausage links, fluffy pancakes, waffles, French Toast, scrambled eggs with cheese, assorted bagels, muffins, breads, pastries, Gluten Free English muffins and breads, sunflower honey-nut bread, made-to-order omelet Station, as well as orange juice and coffee.
 Morning: Discover groundstrokes, approach shots, mid court volleys, closing volleys - when to hit cross court, when to hit down the line based on opponents positioning. Play 'live ball' drills - focusing on where to hit groundstrokes and volleys based on opponents positioning.
 Lunch: Lunch will be served at Big Jimís, located in the Robert Trent Jones Clubhouse across from the Tennis Center. Big Jimís offers a relaxed setting for players in between sets.
 Afternoon: Group will play afternoon tennis as part of the program.
 Dinner: A plated dinner will be served in the resort's conference center.
 Evening: The Loggerhead Sea Turtle uses Hilton Head Islandís beaches each summer for nesting. Come hear more about this threatened species and the ways that Hilton Head Island Ė and you Ė can help them survive. Presented by the Coastal Discovery Museum which manages the Town of Hilton Head Island Sea Turtle Protection Project.

Day 4: Tennis Instruction-Overheads, Lobs, Covering for lobs/Moving with partner/Free afternoon/Free evening
(Wednesday, January 29)
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy the Full-American Breakfast Buffet at the resort's HH Prime restaurant which includes selections from the following menu (some options available in season): assorted cereals, assorted low-fat yogurts, granola, assorted dried fruits: raisins, apricots, pineapples, fresh sliced fruit: honeydew, pineapple, cantaloupe, berries: blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, creamy grits, steel cut oatmeal, breakfast potatoes, apple wood smoked bacon, blueberry sausage, special blend sausage, blend sausage links, fluffy pancakes, waffles, French Toast, scrambled eggs with cheese, assorted bagels, muffins, breads, pastries, Gluten Free English muffins and breads, sunflower honey-nut bread, made-to-order omelet Station, as well as orange juice and coffee.
 Morning: Group members will meet at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center for group instruction with opportunities for individual instruction. Review lobbing the net player to put opponents on the defensive. Also work on overheads - when to hit at the net player, when to hit away from the net player. Then, play 'live ball' drills using lobs and overheads.
 Lunch: Lunch will be served at Big Jimís, located in the Robert Trent Jones Clubhouse across from the Tennis Center. Big Jimís offers a relaxed setting for players in between sets.
 Afternoon: This is the ideal time to discover Hilton Head Island.
 Dinner: Dinner on your own.
 Evening: The evening will be free to enjoy the entertainment possibilities Hilton Head has to offer.

Day 5: Tennis Instruction - Serving, Returning serve, Signaling/Poaching on the serve /Tennis Play/Presentation
(Thursday, January 30)
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy the Full-American Breakfast Buffet at the resort's HH Prime restaurant which includes selections from the following menu (some options available in season): assorted cereals, assorted low-fat yogurts, granola, assorted dried fruits: raisins, apricots, pineapples, fresh sliced fruit: honeydew, pineapple, cantaloupe, berries: blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, creamy grits, steel cut oatmeal, breakfast potatoes, apple wood smoked bacon, blueberry sausage, special blend sausage, blend sausage links, fluffy pancakes, waffles, French Toast, scrambled eggs with cheese, assorted bagels, muffins, breads, pastries, Gluten Free English muffins and breads, sunflower honey-nut bread, made-to-order omelet Station, as well as orange juice and coffee.
 Morning: Participants will meet at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center for group instruction with opportunities for individual instruction. Learn where to hit return of serve on first serve and second serve as well as where to serve, serve and volley. Review using signals to poach. Then, watch and critique doubles play.
 Lunch: Lunch will be served at Big Jimís, located in the Robert Trent Jones Clubhouse across from the Tennis Center. Big Jimís offers a relaxed setting for players in between sets.
 Afternoon: Group will play afternoon tennis as part of the program.
 Dinner: A plated dinner will be served in the resort's conference center.
 Evening: An Entertaining Evening.

Day 6: Program Wrap Up

 Morning: Put everything you've learned together through a summary of the week before the program ends with a question & answer session.
