The National Shrimp Festival, held each October on the beaches of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, has become one of America’s favorite outdoor festivals over its 40-year-plus history. In this holiday for seafood lovers, hundreds of presenters offer arts and crafts, musical entertainment, an international marketplace and — of course! — shrimp and other tasty treats prepared in a variety of ways. Learn about the seafood industry, immerse yourself in the festival atmosphere, and enjoy free time opportunities to tickle your taste buds.




Highlights

• Learn about the seafood industry, types of shrimp harvested in the Gulf of Mexico, their economic importance, and go behind the scenes at a processing plant to see how some of your favorite foods get from boat to table.
• With an expert chef, learn how to create your own seafood specialties and taste scrumptious Gulf Coast favorites as well as enjoying a dinner out at a popular local restaurant.
• Use the free time reserved for your personal independent exploration to experience the diverse sights, sounds, and tastes of the Shrimp Festival during a full afternoon with lunch on your own.

Orange Beach

Brilliant white-sand beaches greet beautiful emerald waters at this beachfront resort on the north shore of the Gulf of Mexico, 26 miles west of Pensacola. Golf courses, hiking trails, fresh water fishing and bike paths are just a few minutes away.

Thomas McKinstry

Tom McKinstry is retired from the U.S. Army as a Lt. Colonel. Tom served in Vietnam as an aviator. He has a bachelor’s degree from Spring Hill College and a master’s from the University of South Alabama. Tom retired as a high school teacher in Mobile and was an assistant professor at Spring Hill College and the University of South Alabama. He has been a favorite instructor for the University of South Alabama Road Scholar for many years.
 
Leslie Thorpe

Leslie Thorpe is an executive chef who has honed his skills in the food and beverage industry for more than 20 years. From dishwasher to chef par excellence, he has used experience, education, creativity and dedication to move through all levels of the commercial kitchen. Leslie has worked in fine restaurants and hotels throughout Florida, Alabama and Texas. His love of food recently set him on a new path as the culinary arts instructor at Murphy High School in Alabama.

You must register at least 24 hours in advance. The sooner you register, the easier it is for them to match you with someone else and lower your cost. When you call you will get Yellow Cab, you must ask for Mobile Bay Transportation. They will transfer you to Mobile Bay Transportation. You can register on line by emailing dispatch@mobilebaytransportation.com or you can call 251-476-7711. Confirm your reservation before your flight lands to ensure pick up. Driving Directions
  From Interstate 10, east or west Take exit 44 south at the Loxley Alabama exit. Go south on State Highway 59, Gulf Shores Parkway, about 35 miles into Gulf Shores. Hiqhway 59 ends at Highway 182. Turn left on Highway 182, East Beach Boulevard. East Beach Boulevard becomes Perdido Beach Boulevard. Holiday Inn Express is located about 5.2 mile on the right, next to Souvenir City.
  From Interstate 65 (Montgomery, AL) Take exit 37 south, the Bay Minette/Gulf Shores Parkway exit. Take State Highway 287 south to State Highway 59 south, Gulf Shores Parkway. It is about 60 miles to Gulf Shores. Hiqhway 59 ends at Highway 182. Turn left on Highway 182, East Beach Boulevard. East Beach Boulevard becomes Perdido Beach Boulevard. Holiday Inn Express is located about 5.2 mile on the right, next to Souvenir City.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Welcome and Orientation/Dinner in hotel/Introductions
(Tuesday, October 7)
   
 Afternoon: Welcome by the University of South Alabama staff. Orientation for the hotel, schedule of activities, including information about field trips, are handled at this time. Questions are welcomed.
 Dinner: Dinner will be served buffet style in the hotel dining room.
 Evening: After dinner we will have time for each participant to tell a little information about themselves and make connections with others. Program will adjourn by 8:30 PM (Please note the schedule is tentative and will reflect instructor availability)

Day 2: All meals in the hotel today/Morning class on shrimp/Afternoon Field trip to local Seafood Processing Plant/Evening session on the Shrimp Festival
(Wednesday, October 8)
   
 Breakfast: Continental Breakfast served in the hotel dining room.
 Morning: This morning, enjoy two class sessions given by a representative from the Alabama Department of Marine Resources. Learn about the Gulf Coast seafood industry. Study the types of shrimp found in the Gulf of Mexico and what other things can affect the coastal seafood economy.
 Lunch: Lunch will be served buffet style in the hotel dining room.
 Afternoon: This afternoon, take a field trip to a local seafood processing plant. Go behind the scenes as you meander through the facility observing how some of your favorite entrées get from the boat to your dinner table. Observe sorting, cleaning, packaging, and freezing when the plant is running.
 Dinner: Dinner is served buffet style in the hotel dining room.
 Evening: Get your first taste of the Shrimp Festival this evening! Get the inside scoop on what to expect on the day of the event including food, exhibits, and entertainment. Learn about juried art and local artists, both of which contribute greatly to the festival's success.

Day 3: Breakfast in the hotel/Morning class on Jubilee/Lunch on your own at the Shrimp Festival/Shrimp Festival/Dinner at a local seafood restaurant.
(Thursday, October 9)
   
 Breakfast: Continental Breakfast served in the hotel dining room.
 Morning: Discover Jubilee, a natural phenomenon that takes place from time to time on the shores of Mobile Bay in Alabama. Occurring mainly on warm summer nights, often in the early pre-dawn hours, the event initiates a joyous community beach party. Learn what this rare celebration is all about and why it benefits coastal residents.
 Lunch: Explore many options for a bountiful lunch at the Shrimp Festival. Since this meal is on your own, you can enjoy sampling many of the local delicacies, and shrimp cooked in a variety of ways.
 Afternoon: Spend the afternoon exploring the sights, sounds and tastes of the Shrimp Festival! View the work of local artists, enjoy live music, and sample tasty seafood and non-seafood dishes!
 Dinner: Dinner at a local seafood restaurant this evening. Located on the back bay in a marina, this restaurant serves upscale seafood, steaks and more. They serve local seafood, cooked to perfection. Dinning on the water is always a plus.

Day 4: Breakfast in hotel/Check out and class on cooking shrimp/Farewell Lunch
(Friday, October 10)
   
 Breakfast: Continental Breakfast is served in the hotel dining room.
 Morning: If you didn’t get enough shrimp to satisfy your taste buds at the Shrimp Festival, then you’ll love today’s morning class. Explore your favorite tasty crustaceans with your Road Scholar chef! From soups to salads, gumbos, and entrées you will learn great ways to create your own seafood feast at home. Gather tips and tricks from an industry professional while you sample one of the Gulf Coast’s most scrumptious treasures! Check out of rooms.
 Lunch: Buffet style lunch served in the hotel dining room.

Biking trails available throughout the Gulf State Park. Additional trails available in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
  Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge
Hike through unspoiled forest to view wildlife. Beach access available.
  Fort Morgan
Fort built in the 1500's by the Spanish. Known mostly for its strategic location during the Civil War's Battle of Mobile Bay. Visit the fort museum and learn from the guides and reenactors about the Confederate soldiers of 1864.
  Gulf State Park
18 hole golf course, 6,000 acre park with walking trails and nature center are available at Gulf State Park. You can also fish in the Gulf or in a fresh water lake, or walk along the 2 1/2 mile beach on the Gulf of Mexico. For additional information, visit www.dcnr.state.al.us
