Curtains up, it’s opening night! Home to more than just swaying palms and sand beaches on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Sarasota is also home to a true ommagio operatico. Join us for an exploration into the dramatic world of opera as the prestigious Sarasota Opera Company opens its 56th season at the magnificent Mediterranean Revival-style Edwards Theater. Feel the gaiety in a vibrato, the sadness of an aria lamentosa, and enjoy an intermezzo exploring the colorful, artistic streets of Florida’s capital of culture.




Highlights

• Go backstage with performers and technicians and take a peek at the rich costumes as you delve into opera beyond the stage.
• Receive expert instruction from veterans of the stage and divas in their own right, as you analyze, review and critique the performances.
• Take advantage of historic downtown Sarasota’s eclectic culinary scene during a dinner on your own at one of the many restaurants within walking distance of the Sarasota Opera House.

Situated on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico on Florida's west coast, Sarasota is rich in cultural treasures and recreational attractions within a short driving distance, including the outstanding John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the Ringling Museum of the Circus, art galleries, golf courses and beaches.



Accommodations
Modern, full service hotel with swimming pool, Jacuzzi and fitness center on Lake Osprey, except on March 19 program. Sharon Ohrenstein

Sharon Ohrenstein has worn various hats in the performing arts, including that of singer, actress, writer/lyricist, director, and one-half of the concert duo “The Ohs.” She portrayed Marie Dindon in “La Cage Aux Folles” and has starred in productions such as “The Sound of Music” and “La Bohème.” Sharon has also directed “Romeo and Juliet,” “The Taming of the Shrew” and “The Glass Menagerie.” Sharon has appeared on television and screen and is working on a screenplay.
 
Barney FitzGerald

Barney is a professional actor, costume designer and director who has been involved with show business for over 40 years. He was the resident costume designer for Coastal Theatre Productions for 17 years, and for the past 13 years, has worked as the assistant to the resident costume designer for the Sarasota Opera. His designs have graced stages around the country and toured as far as the Far East. When not at home in Sarasota, he can be found designing for the Chautauqua Opera in New York.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival & check-in, Registration & Orientation, Introductions, Preview of "II trovatore."
(Thursday, March 13)

Note: Participants have everything at the hotel today.



   
 Arrive To: Registration is between 3:00 - 4:45pm. Hotel check-in is at 4:00pm, room may be ready earlier.
 Afternoon: At 5:00 Orientation of the week and introductions.
 Dinner: Dinner will be catered in at the hotel at 6:00pm. Forms are sent out in advance to see if participants are vegetarian. We can't provide special dietary needs meals, if necessary please make your own personal arrangements if needed.
 Evening: Preview of "II trovatore'

Day 2: Opera House Behind the Scenes, Noon Concert of Apprentice Singers, Evening performance of "II trovatore."
(Friday, March 14)

Note: Walk behind the scenes involves walking at a moderate pace inside the opera house. There are elevators when we visit the costume shop on the second floor. Participants are dropped off in front of the opera house as close as possible and picked up as close as possible. Participants walk to the restaurant of their choice for lunch, many within one block of the opera house.



   
 Breakfast: An enhanced continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: FIELD TRIP: Go behind the scenes with a local expert at the Sarasota Opera House, including the costume shop. (Short break) PERFORMANCE: Noon Concert of Apprentice Opera Singers
 Lunch: Lunch will be on your own in charming Downtown Sarasota.
 Afternoon: EXCURSION: Explore on your own Sarasota's Downtown, architecture, art galleries, library and much more!

Back to the hotel before dinner and opera.

 Dinner: Dinner will be at the hotel in our private meeting room.
 Evening: PERFORMANCE: Il Trovatore, Giuseppe Verdi 8:00pm

A troubador’s quest for love, a soldier’s lust, and a mother’s undying thirst for vengeance is the story of Verdi’s dramatic opera. Premiered in 1853, Il trovatore features such operatic favorites as the great “Di quella pira” for tenor and the famous “Anvil Chorus.”

Day 3: Introduction to Opera/Talkback on "II trovatore," and Preview of "Barber of Seville."
(Saturday, March 15)

Note: Minimal walking today, participants are dropped off in front of the opera house as close as possible and picked up as close as possible.



   
 Breakfast: An enhanced continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Talkback on "II trovatore" Coffee Break PRESENTATION: "Intro to Barber of Seville."
 Lunch: Lunch at the hotel in our private meeting room.
 Afternoon: PERFORMANCE: "The Barber of Seville"/Gioachino Rossini. One of the most beloved works in the operatic repertory returns to Sarasota Opera’s stage. Determined to win the heart of the beautiful Rosina with charm and wit, rather than money, Count Almaviva enlists the help of Figaro, the Barber of Seville, to steal her away from her guardian, Dr. Bartolo.
 Dinner: Dinner will be at the hotel in our private meeting room or at a local restaurant.
 Evening: OPERA DVD: TBA

Day 4: Talkback on "The Barber of Seville," Preview and Matinee of "Jerusalem," Dinner will be on your own at St Armands Circle
(Sunday, March 16)

Note: Minimal walking today, participants are dropped off in front of the opera house as close as possible and picked up as close as possible. Bus will drop off participants at St. Armands Circle for dinner on your own, some restaurants are close to the drop off point and some are a great distance under one mile.



   
 Breakfast: An enhanced continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Talkback on "Barber of Seville," and voices of opera. Coffee Break PRESENTATION: Preview and introduction of "Jerusalem," learn about the classic opera singer.
 Lunch: Socialize over lunch with your fellow students at the hotel in our private meeting room.
 Afternoon: PERFORMANCE: "Jerusalem", Giuseppe Verdi 1:30pm An epic tale of warriors, family rivalry, and jealousy evolves into a story of forgiveness. Based on Verdi's earlier opera, I Lombardi alla prima crociata, Verdi's Jérusalem abounds with rousing choruses, beautiful ensembles, and exciting arias. Jérusalem will be the 30th installment of the Verdi Cycle, and an experience you won't want to miss.
 Dinner: Dinner on your own. A bus will depart for St. Armands Circle, renowned as a continental marketplace. The Circle is a charming and graceful synthesis of past and present. Relax and enjoy a meal from a plethora of award winning restaurants; shop for trinkets and treasures, high fashion and home decor; from gourmet snacks to candlelit feasts, you'll find it all on St. Armands Circle.
 Evening: Continue to explore the rich history and statuary placed by John Ringling on St. Armands Circle.

Day 5: The assistant costume designer from the Sarasota Opera House will share trade secrets. Enjoy a box lunch to go or stay and dine will fellow classmates, immediately following class.
(Monday, March 17)

Note: Nothing scheduled away from hotel today. Program ends after an early lunch.



   
 Breakfast: An enhanced continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: The assistant costume designer from the Sarasota Opera House will share trade secrets from 9:00-10:30am. Check-out of room by 11:00am.
 Lunch: A box lunch is offered at 10:30am on the last day to allow students who need to catch an early flight to take their lunch with them. Students who do not need to leave can enjoy their lunch in the meeting room or on the patio by the pool. Program ends after lunch.
