Discover how the experimentation exhibited by Art Nouveau and the French Impressionists made Paris the center of free artistic expression in Europe at the turn of the 20th century. Examine the scandalous and intimate relationships among radicals of this period and how the era influenced the work and ideas of Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein and others.



Jewish Masters of Modern Art

Jews figured prominently in the art movements of the 20th century. Embark on a journey with the Jewish masters of European and American art as you explore the works of Lieberman, Lifschitz, Rothko and others.



Experience Japanese Traditions and a Culinary Experience

Learn key words and phrases in the Japanese language as you study the culture’s customs and traditions. Enjoy a Japanese tea ceremony and assist a native chef in preparing an authentic Japanese dinner — then enjoy dining!

Driving Directions
  I-75 From I-75 exit #210 (Fruitville Rd) go west six miles until the road ends at Tamiami Trail, also known as U.S. 41. Turn left and continue south three blocks to Gulfstream Avenue. Make a right onto the Causeway, John Ringling Bridge and continue to St. Armands Circle. Continue halfway around the circle and follow the signs to Lido Beach and make a left at the beach onto Ben Franklin Drive. The Lido Beach Resort will be on your right just past the public beach and is approx. 7.5 miles from the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

Day 1: Arrival & Check-in Registration & Orientation, Getting to know you
(Sunday, January 26)

Note: Everything occurs in the hotel meeting room.



   
 Arrive To: PROGRAM REGISTRATION: Please take the elevator to the 8th floor to visit the Road Scholar registration table between 3:30 - 4:55pm. <> HOTEL CHECK-In: 4:00pm, room may be ready earlier.
 Afternoon: ORIENTATION: Begins at 5:00pm in our private meeting room. We'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety, guidelines, emergency procedures, and any other administrative issues. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes we will notify you as quickly as possible. We appreciate your understanding.
 Dinner: The dinner will be served at the hotel in the private meeting room at approx. 6:00pm. (There will be a vegetarian option available if you noted a vegetarian preference on your Health & Safety form.)
 Evening: GETTING TO KNOW YOU: After dinner we'll spend some time becoming better acquainted with participants and program staff. Find out what you have in common beyond a love of learning! The rest of the evening is yours to continue making new friends or just to relax and prepare for the full day of activity ahead.

Day 2: Jewish Artists presentation followed by Japanese presentation, French Revolutions/French Impressionists/Belle Epoque, evening Game Night!
(Monday, January 27)

Note: All activities are at the hotel today, except for free time on your own.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the private meeting room and includes; an assortment of fresh fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, bagels with cream cheese, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and freshly brewed coffee, decaffeinated coffee, herbal teas, orange and prune juice.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Discover Japanese culture's customs and traditions.

PRESENTATION: Learn how Jews figured prominently in the art movements of the 20th century and why for centuries Jewish Culture had been largely perceived as an "artless tradition" for many reasons.

 Lunch: Lunch in our private meeting room at the hotel.
 Afternoon: PRESENTATION: Become fascinated with the French Revolutions/French Impressionists/Belle Epoque

FREE TIME: Explore the sandy beach right outside your hotel room. Or enjoy using the Jacuzzi or one of the swimming pools.

 Dinner: Enjoy dinner at the hotel in our private meeting room.
 Evening: HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE: Game Night!

Day 3: Focus on the Jewish masters of European and American art/Two presentations on Le Belle Epoque, DVD "Midnight in Paris," evening play "Other Desert Cities," at the Asolo Repertory Theatre.
(Tuesday, January 28)

Note: When attending the theatre the bus will drop participants off in front of theatre and will pick up in front of the theatre.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the private meeting room and is a continental breakfast on the 2nd and 4th breakfast.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Delve into Jewish masters of European and American art as you explore the works of Lieberman, Lifschitz, Rothko and others. Break

PRESENTATION: Delve into Paris International Avant-Grande: Picasso, Chagal, Soutine, et al.

 Lunch: Lunch will be catered by the hotel restaurant in our private meeting room.
 Afternoon: PRESENTATION: Continue your studies of La Belle Epoque; with a Tour of Paris and "The Lost Generation."

CLASS RELATED DVD: "Midnight in Paris." Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, and Carla Bruni star in Woody Allen's romantic comedy about a family on a business trip in the City of Light. Day 4: Ringling Museum Complex Day, luncheon at Treviso, free night with Dinner on your own at Historic St. Armands Circle.
(Wednesday, January 29)

Note: Walking up to 1 1/2 miles at The Ringling Complex, To see everything there is a lot of walking, however, there are plenty of benches to rest on and you can explore at your own pace or with the group. Hotel shuttle will shuttle you back and forth for dinner at St. Armands Circle. Drop off point on the Circle can be up to 1/2 mile from the restaurant you have reservations for your dinner.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the private meeting room and includes; a large assortment of fresh fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, bagels with cream cheese, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and freshly brewed coffee, decaffeinated coffee, herbal teas, orange and prune juice.
 Morning: FIELD TRIP: to the Ringling Museum Complex. A local expert takes you through Ca' d'Zan, (house of John) the Ringlings' magnificent, 32-room Venetian-Gothic mansion. See "Tibbals Learning Center," featuring Howard Brothers Miniature Circus. Next see the Circus Museum displays of memorabilia and artifacts from the long and eventful history of the Ringling Bros.
 Lunch: Luncheon will be at the Ringling Museum's "Treviso," an Italian restaurant.
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Enjoy the architectural elements of the Art Museum, focus of the collection; Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces and the collecting style of John Ringling. At your leisure explore the gardens and grounds given to the people of Florida, thus preserving for generations to come the exuberant lifestyle of America's spectacular Roaring Twenties. The beautiful landscaped grounds contain over 400 species of exotic Florida trees, plants, flowers, sculpture garden figures and Mable's historic rose garden.
 Dinner: FREE EVENING TO EXPLORE ON YOUR OWN: Walk or hotel shuttle will take you to St. Armands Circle, renowned as a continental marketplace. The Circle is a charming and graceful synthesis of past and present. Relax and enjoy a meal from a plethora of award winning restaurants, from gourmet snacks to candlelit feasts, you'll find it all on St. Armands Circle.
 Evening: Continue to explore St. Armands Circle and it's beautiful statuary.

Day 5: Basic Japanese language presentation, Learn about Japanese Culture, Gertrude Steins Legacy, afternoon enjoy a Japanese Tea presentation and sampling, an evening cooking class, then dine on your scrumptious creation.
(Thursday, January 30)

Note: When visiting the Friendship Center for the cooking and dining class the bus will drop off directly in front of the Center and will pick up at the same time. (Please note the Center is closed to the general public at 5:00pm.)



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the private meeting room and is a continental breakfast on the 2nd and 4th breakfast.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Learn a few basic and interesting words in Japanese. Japanese is an East Asian language spoken by about 125 million speakers, primarily in Japan, where it is the national language. Enrich your appreciation of Japanese Culture from Japanese native.

Break

PRESENTATION: Gertrude Steins Legacy

 Lunch: Lunch at the hotel in our private meeting room.
 Afternoon: PRESENTATION: Partake in a Japanese Tea presentation and sampling with Japanese native.
 Dinner: Board bus for the Friendship Center's Cafe for a Japanese dining experience where you are the chef. (The Friendship Centers is the coordinating agency for this Road Scholar program.)
 Evening: HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE: Partake in a Japanese culinary experience with Japanese native chef. Participant a lot or just a little whatever you feel comfortable with? (No raw fish will be served.)

Day 6: One more class on Jewish Artists. Box lunch to go or stay and enjoy with other participants.
(Friday, January 31)

Note: Morning class and meals in private meeting room.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the private meeting room and includes; a large assortment of fresh fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, bagels with cream cheese, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and freshly brewed coffee, decaffeinated coffee, herbal teas, orange and prune juice.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Explore the impact of Jewish Masters of Modern Art.

Pick up souvenir photos.

 Lunch: A box lunch is offered on Fridays to allow students who need to catch an early flight to take their lunch with them. Students who do not need to leave can enjoy their lunch in the meeting room or on the patio by the pool. Programs ends after lunch.
