Explore the history of American musical theatre then move forward to trace its development over the past 20 years. We'll strive to answer the question: Where is musical theatre going? Lectures and live music.



James Michener: Master Storyteller

Widely regarded as a storytelling phenomenon, Michener created works that have translated successfully to the stage and film. We'll explore some of his most well known, including his Pulitzer Prize winning story that became "South Pacific".



Great Comedy Teams

The ability to make people light is a gift. With the straight man and the comic, each team created a unique relationship that involved both humor and pathos. Explore their relationships and their unique comic styles. Lectures and selected film clips.

Driving Directions
  From North to Magnuson I-4 or I-75 south, merging onto I-275 (St. Petersburg). You will travel approximately 20 miles, all the way through Tampa, across Tampa Bay and past the downtown St. Petersburg exits. Take I-275 south to exit 16. Turn left at the stop. Turn right on Sunshine Skyway Lane. The Magnuson Hotel will be on your left.
  From South to Magnuson I-75 north to I-275. Cross the Sunshine Skyway Bridge ($1.25 toll). Take Exit 16 right onto Sunshine Skyway Lane. The Magnuson Hotel will be on your right.
  From St. Petersburg Clearwater Airport to Magnuson Turn left onto Roosevelt Blvd. (686) as you exit the airport. Follow to Ulmerton Road.Take I-275 south to exit 16. Turn left at the stop. Turn right on Sunshine Skyway Lane. The Magnuson Hotel will be on your left.
  From Tampa International Airport to Magnuson I-275 south toward St. Petersburg. You will travel approximately 20 miles, all the way through Tampa, across Tampa Bay and past the downtown St. Petersburg exits. Take I-275 south to exit 16. Turn left at the stop.  Evening: Program coordinator will conduct an orientation and introduction program. Final itinerary will be provided.

Day 2: Great Comedy Teams, James Michener / Campus Tour / Guest Speaker
(Monday, January 27)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Morning: Great Comedy Teams: The ability to make people laugh is a gift. With the straight man and the comic, each team created a unique relationship that involved both humor and pathos. Explore their relationships and their unique comic styles. Lectures and selected film clips. Take a short refreshment break between classes PLACEMENT OF CLASSES ON THE SCHEDULE (MORNING, AFTERNOON OR EVENING) ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Afternoon: The Great Variety Shows: Ed Sullivan, Show of Shows, Perry Como, Dinah Shore and more / Campus Tour James Michener was widely regarded as a storytelling phenomenon. He created works that have translated successfully to both stage and screen. This week come along as we explore some of his most well known novels, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning story that became South Pacific. After class, take a tour across our beautiful 281-acre waterfront campus via motor coach.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Evening: Special Guest Speaker: TBA

Day 3: Contemporary Musical Theater, James Michener / Field Trip / Movie Night
(Tuesday, January 28)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Morning: Begin the morning by exploring the history of American musical theatre and then - as the week progresses - move forward and trace its development over the past 20 years. We'll strive to answer the question: Where is musical theatre going? Lectures and live music in class each day. Take a short refreshment break between classes.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Afternoon: Begin the afternoon with a class on James Michener. Then, board our motor coach for a tour of a local museum. ALL EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Evening: Film related to one of the courses. To be announced.

Day 4: Contemporary Musicals, James Michener, Great Comedy Teams / Meet the International Students
(Wednesday, January 29)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Morning: Two lectures this morning. Continuation of Great Comedy Teams and Musical Theater. Take a short refreshment break between classes
 Lunch: Lunch at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Afternoon: Continuation of the Michener class. After class, join us for a discussion session with our international students. Get a new perspective on life outside the US.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Evening: Final class on Michener.

Day 5: American Musical Theatre /Time on your own / Live Entertainment.
(Thursday, January 30)

 Morning: Continuation and final class on Contemporary American Musical Theater There will be a short refreshment break between classes.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Afternoon: Spend the afternoon on your own. Transportation provided to the waterfront area of downtown St. Petersburg. Lots of things to do within walking distance or local trolley ride: museums, shops, galleries, etc.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entrees to choose from in a self-service format with trays.
 Evening: Live musical program to be announced.

Day 6: Great Comedy Teams / End of Program.
(Friday, January 31)

 Morning: Continuation and final class on the Great Comedy Teams.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Continuing Education Center dining hall. A selection of various entries to choose from in a self-service format with trays. Program Concludes after Lunch today. Have a safe trip home.
