Experience and explore America’s pastime and the rich legacy of the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins in sunny Fort Myers, Florida. These perennial American League powers have totaled four World Series championships in the last 24 years. Explore Red Sox history — Ted Williams, Carlton Fisk’s 1975 home run and the 2004 miracle title that ended the 86-year Curse of the Bambino. Revisit the Twin’s 1960 move to the Twin Cities, Kent Hrbek’s 1987 World Series grand slam and the arrival of $25 million man Joe Mauer. Don’t forget your mitt and autograph book!

Fort Myers

The city of Fort Myers boasts beautiful beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, but it is more than a seaside resort. It is the site of a Civil War battle and was chosen by both Thomas Edison and Henry Ford as a location for winter estates. In late winter, Fort Myers welcomes baseball’s Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox, who hold spring training here.

Joe Castiglione

In 2012, Joe Castiglione will work his 30th season as a radio announcer for the Boston Red Sox. He has done play-by-play on TV for the Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers, was an announcer for the Cleveland Cavaliers, and spent six winters announcing college basketball on New England Sports Network. In the off-season, he teaches broadcast journalism at Northeastern University and Franklin Pierce College. Joe also works to raise money for the Jimmy Fund and the fight against cancer.
 
Mike Hawn

Mike Hawn is a graduate of the Harry Wendlestedt School for Umpires and a member of the Florida Collegiate Umpires in the Sunshine State Conference. He works as a back-up umpire for minor league spring training games. Mike has been an umpire for over 30 years.
 
Allen Goldis

Al Goldis was a professional baseball player, coach and sports information director, prior to re-entering the game of baseball as the East Coast Supervisor of Scouting for the California Angels. His career then led him to lead the scouting departments of the Chicago White Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers, and serve in various leadership ositions with the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets. Al was inducted into the Major League Baseball Scouting Hall of Fame in 2009.

Please call the Homewood Suites upon your arrival at the Southwest Florida International Airport RSW at 239-210-7300. The complimentary shuttle picks up every half an hour and they have two shuttles. (The Hilton Garden Inn also shares the same shuttle.) Hours of shuttle are 4:30am until 2:00am daily.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Registration/Orientation
(Sunday, March 16)
   
 Arrive To: REGISTRATION: With Road Scholar is between 3:30 to 4:45pm. HOTEL CHECK-IN: Starts at 4:00pm, room may be ready earlier.
 Afternoon: ORIENTATION: At 5:00pm Orientation of the week starts.
 Dinner: Dinner is catered by restaurant at the hotel. Forms are sent out in advance to see if participants are vegetarian.
 Evening: GETTING TO KNOW YOU: After dinner there is a getting to know you session for participants to become better acquainted.

Day 2: Morning presentations, Spring Training baseball game see Minnesota Twins play the Baltimore Orioles in Sarasota at Ed Smith Stadium.
(Monday, March 17)

Note: Must be able to walk from distant parking lot to and from the stadium, plus be able to climb stairs at the baseball stadium.



   
 Breakfast: An enhanced continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Enjoy a baseball lecture.

Break

PRESENTATION: Enjoy a baseball lecture.

 Lunch: Students will purchase their own lunch at the hotel next door or area restaurant.
 Afternoon: Free afternoon. The bus will be leaving late afternoon in order to arrive in Sarasota in time for the evening game.
 Dinner: Location of dinner is tba.
 Evening: BASEBALL GAME: Attend an evening baseball game between the Minnesota Twins at the Baltimore Orioles in Sarasota at Ed Smith Stadium. (Bring a warm jacket it can be cold at night.)

Day 3: Morning presentations, Spring Training baseball night game Tampa Bay Rays at Minnesota Twins.
(Tuesday, March 18)

 Breakfast: An enhanced continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Hear about the history of the Negro League.

Break

PRESENTATION: Learn how to keep score in Major League Baseball.

 Lunch: Students will purchase their own lunch at the hotel next door or at an area restaurant.
 Afternoon: Watch a baseball DVD or enjoy a lecture.
 Dinner: Dinner will be on your own at a local restaurant in Ft Myers or the dinner provided by the Homewood Suites.
 Evening: BASEBALL GAME: Spring Training night baseball game. See the Tampa Bay Rays play against the Minnesota Twins at Hammond Stadium right here in Ft Myers.

Day 4: Morning presentations, Spring Training night baseball game Pittsburgh Pirates play the Boston Red Sox at Jet Blue Park in Ft Myers.
(Wednesday, March 19)

Note: Must be able to walk from distant parking lot to and from the stadium, plus be able to climb stairs at the baseball stadium.



   
 Breakfast: An enhanced continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Baseball lecture.
 Lunch: Lunch will be on your own at area restaurant or at the hotel next door.
 Afternoon: HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE: Test your baseball triva knowledge with a challenging game conducted by the group leader.
 Dinner: Dinner on your own at game.
 Evening: BASEBALL GAME: Watch a Spring Training baseball game, see the Pittsburgh Pirates play the Boston Red Sox at Jet Blue Park right here in Ft Myers.

Day 5: Morning presentations, Spring Training baseball night game, see the New York Yankees play the Boston Red Sox at Jet Blue Park in Ft Myers.

 Breakfast: An enhanced continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Sports announcer from the Boston Red Sox will share the excitement from his career.

Break

PRESENTATION: A retired player will fill you in on his baseball years.

 Lunch: Students will purchase their own lunch at the hotel next door or at an area restaurant.
 Afternoon: We will leave in the afternoon for a special adventure at Jet Blue Park, including practice before the start of the game.
 Dinner: A special picnic dinner will be offered at Jet Blue Park for our group.
 Evening: BASEBALL GAME: Attend a night game sure to be the highlight of the week! See the New York Yankees play the Boston Red Sox at Jet Blue Park right here in Ft Myers.

Day 6: Morning presentation.
(Friday, March 21)

Note: Program ends today after class then box lunch to go or enjoy at the hotel.

 Morning: PRESENTATION: One lecture on baseball as you wrap up your week.
 Lunch: A box lunch is offered on the last day to allow students who need to catch an early flight to take their lunch with them. Students who do not need to leave can enjoy their lunch in the breakfast room or on the patio by the pool. Program ends after lunch.
