The images of India that capture the mind are contrasting: the bustling streets and markets of Delhi and the serene white marble of the Taj Mahal bathed in light. But for a more rounded understanding of India you must begin in these places and then go beyond — to the expansive desert region of Rajasthan, where chivalrous warrior princes constructed majestic hilltop forts and bejeweled palaces. While the princes have conceded their kingdoms to the modern democracy of India, the architecture, commerce and culture they once reigned over still endure. For many, what is left is the essence of India.

  Description: Sardargarh Fort was constructed from 1738 to 1743 by Sardar Singh one of the most powerful Dhodihais. The Forts overall architectural style is grand, but still it strikes you with a solemn austerity. Travel Details
  Start of Program:
Day 2 in the evening at the program hotel in Delhi. You will be staying at Suryaa New Delhi that night.
  End of Program:
Day 17 after breakfast in Jamba. Transfer to Jodhpur airport is approximately 3 hours. You will be staying at Dera Sand Dune Resort the night before.

To Start of Program

  Transportation to site: If independent flights do not coincide with the designated group transfer, it will be the responsibility of the participant/s to make arrangements to get to the program site. Taxis are readily available at the airport, but you can also arrange a private transfer with Road Scholar Travel Services.
  From End of Program
  Location:  Jamba
  Transportation from site: Program Only Participants are welcome to take the group transfers if their flights coincide with the group flights. There is one designated group transfer available to independent travelers at no additional cost. The designated group transfer time will be around xxx pm (subject to change until approximately 5 weeks prior to departure). PLEASE NOTE: The transfer from the retreat in Jamba to the airport in Jodhpur is approximately 3 hours. Private arrival and departure transfers -at an additional cost- may be arranged in advance by the calling Road Scholar Travel Services.

Day 3: Old Delhi / Rickshaw ride
(Monday, March 17)

Note: Rickshaw ride is through an extremely crowded market. Jama Mosque has a lot of steps.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: Discover Old Delhi. Drive by the Red fort and then take a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk that ends in Jama Masjid with a visit to the Mosque.
 Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: Some free time on your own. In the early evening before dinner, join in a presentation on the Religions of India.
 Dinner: Welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 4: New Delhi / Ghandhi Smriti / Qutab Minar
(Tuesday, March 18)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: This morning discover New Delhi. Walk around India Gate and Government buildings. Continue to Gandhi Smriti with a talk on 'Relevance of Gandhi in Today's World'.
 Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: After lunch continue to Qutub Minar. Qutab Minar is a great masterpiece of Mughal architecture. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has survived the ravages of time impressively. Then the remainder of the afternoon is free for you to explore on your own.
 Dinner: Dinner is on your own.

Day 5: Delhi / Coach to Agra / Sunset with a view of the Taj Mahal
(Wednesday, March 19)

Note: This is a 4-5 hour drive with stops along the way.

 Morning: Check-out of hotel and depart for Agra. En-route, engage in a presentation on “Introduction to Indian History” by your group leader.
 Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: Upon arrival in Agra, explore Itmad-Ud-Daulah's tomb, popularly known as the Baby Taj. Continue to hotel for check in. Then in the late afternoon, view the Taj Mahal from Metab Bagh.
 Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 6: Taj Mahal / Agra Fort / Coach to Jaipur
(Thursday, March 20)

Note: Agra Fort involves a lot of walking and some uneven steps. The drive from Agra to Jaipur is approximately a 5-6 hours drive with stops.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: Before breakfast, set out in the early morning to explore the Taj Mahal. Take some time to explore the exquisite grounds and view the highly decorated inside chamber. Return to the hotel for breakfast. Then continue to Agra Fort. Originally planned as an impregnable military structure by Akbar, the Agra Fort, over a period of time, acquired all the elegance, lavishness and majesty of an imperial palace. Then head off to Jaipur.
 Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: Continue to Jaipur. En route presentation on the Caste System by your group leader. Upon arrival check into your hotel and relax until dinner.
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel.

Day 7: Jaipur / Amber Fort / Janta Manar / Dance school
(Friday, March 21)

Note: Amber Fort will require walking on uneven stones and some steps.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: This morning, drive past Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds). This five storied wonder has a spectacular pyramidal facade and overhanging windows with latticed screens, domes and spires. Continue on to Amber Fort, a example of Rajput architecture with its terraces and ramparts reflected in the Maota Lake below. The interiors of the fort have various royal halls decorated with intricate ivory, mirror and glass work complemented by exquisite wall paintings.
 Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: Continue your exploration of Jaipur with City Place and Jantar Mantar Astronomical Observatory. Transfer to a local dance school and learn about traditional Indian dance
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel.

Day 8: School visit / Free Time / Family Hosted Dinner

 Morning: Explore a local village of Jaipur and visit a secondary school with opportunities to interact with the students there.
 Lunch: Lunch on your own.
 Afternoon: Free time on your own to explore Jaipur.
 Dinner: Enjoy dinner at a Rajastani family's home - a Havali. Interact with the family and learn what makes their living quarters unique.

Day 9: Jaipur / Drive to Sardargarh
(Sunday, March 23)

Note: This is an all day transfers 7 hours including lunch.

 Morning: Depart for Sardargarh with bathroom stops along the way. There will be a presentation on History of Rajasthan.
 Lunch: Lunch en route.
 Afternoon: Upon arrival in Sardargarh, check in with time to relax in the afternoon at your hotel. Join in a walking discovery of the village.
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel.

Day 10: Sardargarh / Village experience / Cooking Demonstration
(Monday, March 24)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: Enjoy a scenic local train ride through villages and hilly bushy countryside ending at a panther reserve.
 Lunch: Lunch at the hotel.
 Afternoon: Participate in a cooking demonstration by the fort owner and learn a little about Indian cooking and the herbs and spice that go make this cuisine so aromatic and flavorful. Also for those interested, take a guided walk of the fort by the fort owners.
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel.

Day 11: Sardargarh / Udaipur / Boat ride on Lake Pichola

Day 12: Udaipur / City Palace / Free Time
(Wednesday, March 26)

Note: Udaipur Palace has a lot of steps.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: This morning explore the City Place and the Jagdish temple located in the city palace complex. The City Palace in Udaipur was built in a flamboyant style and is considered the largest of its type in Rajasthan, a fusion of the Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles, and was built on a hill top that gives a panoramic view of the city and its surrounding, including several historic monuments such as the Lake Palace in Lake Pichola, the Jag Mandir on another island in the lake, the Jagdish Temple close to the palace, the Monsoon Palace on top of an overlooking hillock nearby and the Neemach Mata temple. Then learn about the art of Rajasthan with a presentation on 'Miniature paintings, an insight into the lifestyle of the people of Rajasthan," an art form very unique to Udaipur and can be found ubiquitously in this city.
 Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: Free afternoon on your own to explore Udaipur.
 Dinner: Dinner on your own.

Day 13: Udaipur / Coach to Jodhpur / Ranakpur Jain Temple
(Thursday, March 27)

Note: This is a 5-6 hour transfer with a temple visit and a lunch stop.

 Morning: This morning, depart for Jodhpur. En route, explore Ranakpur Jain Temple, one of the most spectacular Jain Temple in India. Afterwards, continue to Jodhpur.

Day 14: Mehrangarh Fort / Depart for Jamba
(Friday, March 28)

Note: The Fort has a lot of uneven stone walkways and floors. There is an elevator that one can use, if it is working. However, to get to the museum which is at the top there are some uneven steps. Drive to Jamba is approximately 2-3 hours.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: This morning, explore Mehrangarh Fort & Jaswant Thada. Perched on a 400ft high hill its sprawl is the most formidable and magnificent fort in Rajasthan. Enclosed by imposing thick walls, inside its boundaries there are several palaces, which are known for their intricate carvings and sprawling courtyards. The museum in the Mehrangarh Fort is one of the finest museums in Rajasthan and certainly the best laid out. On the way down from the fort, on left is Jaswant Thada, the graceful marble cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. His son Maharaja Sardar Singh built this monument known as the Taj Mahal of Marwar in the memory of Maharaj Jaswant Singh II of Jodhpur. Afterwards, continue on to Jamba.
 Lunch: Lunch at Dera Sand Dune Retreat.
 Afternoon: Enjoy a camel ride to explore the desert's salt mines. See how locals have used the salt concentrated soil to their advantage.

 Morning: Enjoy a jeep safari to explore the living cultures of the ethnic tribes who have preserved their authenticity. Visit the villages of Bishnoi who are agriculturalist. Also visit other tribes like the Raika’s the veterinarians, weavers (Meghwal) and potters (Kumharas).
 Lunch: Lunch at the retreat.
 Afternoon: Free time in the afternoon to enjoy the vista and the retreats facilities. Then join your group leader for a presentation on the tribes of Rajasthan.
 Dinner: Dinner at the retreat.

Day 16: Jamba / Demoiselle Cranes / School visit / Program wrap-up
(Sunday, March 30)

Note: If there is a festival on this day, the group will plan a visit to the festival and rearrange the schedule so that you will be able to still do all of the activities on this day. The Optional Activity will not be included if there is a festival this day.
   
 Breakfast: Before breakfast, head of to the village of Keechen, to get a viewing of the Demoiselle Cranes, the smallest of the crane species that have been spending the winter in this small village for over 150 year. Return to the retreat for breakfast.
 Morning: This morning, transfer to a local school and visit with the children and teachers there. .
 Lunch: Lunch at the retreat.
 Afternoon: This afternoon, take some time to enjoy the retreat. Or you can join an optional activity of taking a camel safari to the nearby dunes. Then join your group leader for program wrap-up before your farewell dinner.
 Dinner: Farewell dinner at the retreat.
 Evening: In the evening enjoy local folk dance and music performed by local artist from nearby town. Join the dancing troupe in learning some traditional dance steps.

Day 17: Departure
(Monday, March 31)

Note: Jamba is a 3 hour drive from Jodhpur airport
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the retreat.
 Morning: Transfer to Jodhpur for your return flight home. Please note the transfer time is approximately 3 hours.
 Afternoon: Group flights departs for JFK via Delhi. You will have a layover in Delhi.

Day 18: Early morning flight / Arrival Home
