The images of India that capture the mind are contrasting: the bustling streets and markets of Delhi and the serene white marble of the Taj Mahal bathed in light. But for a more rounded understanding of India you must begin in these places and then go beyond — to the expansive desert region of Rajasthan, where chivalrous warrior princes constructed majestic hilltop forts and bejeweled palaces. While the princes have conceded their kingdoms to the modern democracy of India, the architecture, commerce and culture they once reigned over still endure. For many, what is left is the essence of India.

Highlights

• Experience the indescribably beautiful Taj Mahal twice — in the late afternoon and at sunrise.
• Journey into the heart of the Princely State of Rajasthan to encounter remote tribal villages.
• With an expert, discover the Amber Fort, an 11th-century fort-and-palace complex that blends Hindu and Muslim styles and rises majestically on the slopes of a hill.

Set off on a desert safari in four-wheel drive vehicles to explore small village communities. Experience the living cultures of rural Rajasthan’s desert, where in painted adobe villages life continues in a timeless fashion, unaffected by modern development, as potters and weavers continue their ancient trades.

India

As a consequence of its size, the history of India is an amalgamation of its individual territories. The natural wealth of India’s territories lured a succession of traders and foreign influences to it, each leaving their imprint on the nation, however faint or localized. Thus, Chinese fishing nets in Kerala are a throwback to that country's ancient maritime trade, while in the north, ancient terracotta figurines bear distinctly Grecian traces.

The fort still retains its medieval underground infrastructure - passage systems, rooms, halls, granaries and stores, open today to guests of the Hotel.
