Discuss challenges we face as individuals, families, communities, and society as a whole. With an educator, activist, and community entrepreneur, deepen your understanding of tools we can use to heal ills as varied as unemployment and climate change.



All That Jazz!

Explore the history and complexity of jazz through talks and demonstrations by a notable professional musician-educator. Gain an appreciation for the impact of jazz on America’s musical life and hear real-life stories about playing with the greats.




West Swanzey

Nestled in the valley of southwest New Hampshire, West Swanzey is one of several postcard-perfect towns in the Monadock region. Winding roads pass covered bridges, historic sites and the 3,000-foot Mount Monadnock, one of the most popular ascents in New England.

  Boston, MA Highway #2 West to 140 N. 140 N to 12 N. 12 N through Troy, NH to Flat Roof Mill Rd., (3.5 miles N of Troy) L on Flat Roof Mill Rd to #32. (about 4 miles - stop sign). R on 32 and an immediate L on Swanzey Lake Rd. 2.2 miles on Swanzey Lake Rd to West Shore Rd. Turn R and follow 1 mile to Pilgrim Pines sign.. continue 1/4 mile to Mayflower Lodge - Office.
  Hartford, CT/Springfield, MA #91 N to exit 28A...(N of Greenfield, MA exit) Follow #10 N from that exit through Winchester, NH. Four miles N of Winchester look for Pilgrim Pines sign. When you pass the Shamrock Reality building, turn R on Swanzey Lake Rd. Follow 4 miles, bearing R to West Shore Rd. Turn L on West Shore Rd and follow one mile to Pilgrim Pines sign... continue 1/4 mile to Mayflower Lodge - Office.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival/Check-in/Registration/Welcome reception/ Opening dinner/Orientation and program.
(Sunday, August 25)
   
 Afternoon: Registration begins at 3:00-3:30 p.m.in Mayflower Lodge - Office. Coffee and snacks, 3:30-5:00 p.m
 Dinner: Dinner is at 6:00 p.m in the Mayflower Dining Room buffet style with an eclectic flair, offering a variety of selections with healthy choices including a vegetarian option, plus coffee, tea, and dessert.
 Evening: Orientation, 7:15 pm. We will begin with introductions, then review the schedule, cover responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have concerning the week. The evening will conclude with a light snack in the dining room with opportunities to converse, watch TV, play a table game or begin putting together a puzzle. PROGRAM OVERVIEW: We will begin our examination of helpful attitudes and ways we can choose to make a difference to experience healing of ourselves and the world around us. You are invited to enter the world of jazz, through its history, musicians and expression.

Day 2: A morning of jazz/Boat rides on Swanzey Lake, Opportunities for a guided hike, swimming, canoeing, golf and tennis followed by our first exploration of healing our world and ourselves.
(Monday, August 26)

 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served 8:00-8:45 am, buffet style in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring cold and hot cereals, bread to toast, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, fruit bar with yogurt and granola, plus coffee, tea, and juices.
 Morning: Our focus for this morning will be on the history of Jazz, along with stories of the great ones led by an outstanding teacher and professional bass player of Jazz. The morning break will include coffee, tea, water, fruit and homemade Danish to renew your energy. The history and story of Jazz will continue for the rest of the morning.
 Lunch: Lunch will be served buffet style from 12:30-1:15 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room inviting your to the choices of a salad bar, soup of the day, taco salad, make your own sandwich, brownies or cookies, drinks of your choice. (Gluten free and vegetarian is available upon request).
 Afternoon: The afternoon will bring opportunities to enjoy the Pilgrim Pines beach on Swanzey Lake, swimming, reading, relaxation, canoeing, Pontoon boat rides will be offered and an option for a guided hike will be offered. Golf, tennis are available on campus. Late afternoon you will be invited to your first session on healing the world with an outstanding instructor.
 Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. After announcements and a blessing for the day a full buffet dinner awaits your palate featuring a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrée, dessert and drinks of your choice. (gluten free and special vegetarian meals are available upon request).
 Evening: Our evening class will be focused at 7:15 pm on healing ourselves, taught by a veteran acupuncturist who employs the ancient method of 'feng shui' in his practice.
 Evening: The evening will conclude with a light snack, opportunities to converse, watch TV, put together a puzzle, play parlor games, etc.

Day 3: Field trip to Greenfield, MA for classes on healing the world and ourselves, followed by a visit to the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne, MA. A live jazz concert will close the day.

 Breakfast: Breakfast in the lodge
 Morning: Today we will journey to Greenfield, MA with on-site classes with our instructors, healing our world and ourselves. Box lunches will be provided between the class experiences. Then we will pay a visit to the Bridge of Flowers and the glacier potholes in Shelburne Falls, MA, before returning to campus.
 Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. After announcements and a blessing, a delicious buffet will include a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrée, dessert and drinks of your choice. (Gluten free and vegetarian meals are available upon request).
 Evening: A live jazz concert will be presented by our jazz instructor and friends at 7:30 pm The evening will conclude with a light snack, and opportunities to converse, watch TV, play parlor games, put together a puzzle or read.

Day 4: A morning of jazz/Opportunities to enjoy the waterfront activities on campus and conclude the day with classes on healing our world and ourselves.
(Wednesday, August 28)

 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served 8:00-8:45 am buffet style in the Mayflower Dining Room, featuring pancakes, sausage, bacon, hot and cold cereals, bread to toast, fruit, yogurt and granola bar along with coffee, tea, and juices.
 Morning: Led by an outstanding bass player and instructor, explore the stories of the great performers, different styles of jazz and its impact on our lives today. The morning break will include coffee, tea, water, fruit and muffins to help renew your energy. After the break, the jazz class will continue.
 Lunch: Lunch is served buffet style 12:30-1:15 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room with great choices from the salad bar, homemade soup, cold cuts for sandwiches, dessert and drinks. (Gluten free and vegetarian choices are available upon request).
 Afternoon: A tour by maxi-vans will be offered to Cathedral of the Pines. Located about 40 minutes from Pilgrim Pines, we will experience a guided tour of this ecumenical place of worship. In this beautiful place listed on the national registry you will learn of its history, be inspired and enjoy a great view of Mt Monadnock.
 Dinner: Dinner will be served buffet style at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room. The buffet will include a salad bar, meat and vegetable entrée, dessert, coffee, tea and milk. (Gluten free and vegetarian entrées are available upon request).
 Evening: An outstanding acupuncturist will lead our class at 7:15 pm on healing ourselves. The evening will conclude with a light snack, and opportunities to converse, watch TV, play parlor games or read.

Day 5: Classes on healing ourselves and tour of 6 covered bridges in Cheshire County/Homespun.
(Thursday, August 29)

 Breakfast: Breakfast at 8:00 am in the lodge.
 Morning: Our first class of the day will focus on healing ourselves. Drawing from his 25 years as an Acupuncturist, our instructor will present learnings for us to consider in managing our own lives. A coffee break will include coffee, tea, water, fruit and homemade donuts to help renew your energy. We will conclude the morning with a class discussion focused on healing our world, learning ways in which we can make a difference.
 Lunch: Lunch will featured a full menu of salad bar, soup, sandwiches, dessert, and drink, served buffet style from 12:30-1:15 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room.
 Afternoon: Using maxi-vans, tour the six covered bridges of Cheshire County, all within a 10 mile radius of Pilgrim Pines campus.
 Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room, buffet style. Tonight will feature a salad bar, meat and vegetarian entrée, choices of drink. The dessert will follow the Homespun event.
 Evening: We will conclude the day with Make your own sundaes, followed with an opportunity to converse, watch TV, start packing up your room, sign up for a box lunch if needed on Friday and read.
 Evening: 7:30 pm Participants are invited to participate in a Homespun event where they share their favorite story, poem, writing, creative writing, song, joke, etc.

Day 6: Full Morning of Classes, Check Out and Farewell Luncheon

 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served buffet style 7:45-8:30 am in the Mayflower Dining Room featuring baked oatmeal, a specialty of the house added to the full buffet
 Morning: Our concluding session will be focused on Jazz beginning at 8:45 am. At 10:00 am, participants will be invited to check out of their rooms to enable our housekeeping staff time to prepare for the next group. Coffee, Tea, water, fruit and a sweet treat awaits your palate after check out. At 11:00 am we will gather for a wrap-up session to debrief our week, share stories, and talk about future Road Scholar programs.
 Lunch: Farewell luncheon beginning at 12:00 Noon will feature a full buffet including a salad bar, a hot entrée, dessert and choice of drinks. Box lunches will be available upon request for those who need to leave early.
