Witness the awesome spectacle of Duluth’s raptor migration as nearly 94,000 birds are counted each fall at the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory. September and October bring the peak migration of Broad-winged, Sharp-shinned, and Cooper’s Hawks, Merlins, Northern Goshawks, Bald and Golden Eagles, Saw-whet Owls, and Peregrine Falcons. Join two instructors with over 35 years combined experience as they prepare you for raptor identification in the field, and offer insight into the biology and habitats of your favorite raptors. Atop “the ridge” overlooking Lake Superior, marvel in the view as thousands of migrating birds pass!

At the westernmost tip of Lake Superior, Duluth is halfway between Minneapolis/St. Paul and the Canadian border. It’s an active seaport that is linked to the Atlantic 2,300 miles east. The city has a museum devoted to its nautical heritage and a rare Aerial Lift Bridge. Duluth also offers numerous trails, rivers, lakes and dozens of city parks.

Driving Directions
  Multiple Locations Our program site, Radisson Hotel Duluth-Harborview, is located right downtown Duluth, MN, on one of the main thoroughfares, Superior Street. Different driving directions apply to get to this location (505 West Superior Street), depending upon from where you will be arriving.
Equipment Requirements: Binoculars are required.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival/Orientation
(Thursday, September 19)

Note: This indoor session is an overview of what to expect, as well as information on Hawk Ridge and other hawk count locations.



   
 Afternoon: Plan to arrive between 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM.
 Dinner: Eat at hotel.
 Evening: Welcome and orientation with introductions is held in a meeting room.

Day 2: Introduction to Hawk Migration and Identification / Birding / Hawk Weekend Keynote Address
(Friday, September 20)

Note: Indoors, learn about migrating raptors. Then, head to Hawk Ridge for five to six hours of hawk viewing and counting, including a visit to a banding station. There is walking, standing, and entering/exiting a large van. Lunches are sack lunches outdoors.



   
 Breakfast: Eat at the hotel.
 Morning: Indoors, learn hawk identification and study highlights of fall migration. Afterward, travel and participate in hawk observing field trips with instructors helping with field identification and providing information about the birds and their habitat.
 Lunch: Enjoy a picnic sack lunch on field trip.
 Afternoon: Continue birding field trip and hawk watching on the ridge. Afterward, have some time to explore Duluth, area trails, or other options during a partial afternoon of free time on your own.
 Dinner: Eat at the hotel.
 Evening: Enjoy Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory naturalist presentation and outdoor activity and observation.

Day 3: Birding Field Trip / Hawk Weekend Festival Presentation
(Saturday, September 21)

Note: Similar to the previous day, explore some additional raptor hot spots by van and then return to the ridge. There is walking, standing, entering/exiting a large van, and a sack lunch outdoors.



   
 Breakfast: Eat at the hotel.
 Morning: Explore the area on a birding field trip and view the hawk migration at Hawk Ridge.
 Lunch: Eat a picnic sack lunch in the field.
 Afternoon: Continue birding field trip, including visit to a hawk banding blind.
 Dinner: Enjoy a dinner at a local Duluth restaurant.
 Evening: Enjoy presentation by a naturalist from Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory.

Day 4: Closing Ceremonies, Check-Out and Departure
(Sunday, September 22)

Note: Program concludes after indoor session of final comments and closing.

 Morning: Following a closing ceremonies, be checked out by the designated hotel check-out time.
