Day 1: Check-In & Registration, Orientation, Welcome Dinner, Opening Presentation
(Thursday, October 10)
   
 Afternoon: HOTEL CHECK-IN: Available from 3:00pm. PROGRAM REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar desk in the lobby to register with the program staff. You will receive your arrival packet containing the up-to-date schedule and program information that we’ll review during our orientation session. Please be aware that program activities and scheduled times could change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. ORIENTATION: After introductions of participants and staff, we will have an orientation session to review the up-to-date schedule and any changes, cover responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have. Road Scholar's FLEX programs are designed for independent-minded participants who want high quality educational content in a structured framework with more free time than our traditional all-inclusive programs. In this City Highlights Weekend, you will have expert-led presentations and field trips that showcase some of Portland's most notable features. The program provides two meals per day on average, thus allowing you the opportunity to explore local cuisine according to your tastes. You will also have a significant amount of free time for personal independent exploration. Your welcome packet has suggestions for free time activities and dining options, and the Group Leader will be happy to offer recommendations. During free time, the Group leader will be available to lead optional informal activities and dining out that you are welcome to join at your own cost if you like. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. Your program price also includes a 2-day unlimited ride pass for the Portland Public Transportation that will allow you to travel on MAX, buses, and street car trolleys throughout your stay.
 Dinner: Enjoy dinner at the hotel as you get to know your fellow participants.
 Evening: OPENING PRESENTATION: Enjoy an overview of Portland, known as the City of Roses, and begin to anticipate what's ahead.

Day 2: Pittock Mansion & Japanese Garden Field Trip, Walking Downtown, Free Afternoon & Evening
(Friday, October 11)
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy a hot breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: Morning FIELD TRIP continues: Our next stop is a special treat. Proclaimed the most authentic Japanese garden outside of Japan, the Portland Japanese Garden is a 5.5-acre haven of tranquil beauty nestled in the scenic west hills of Portland. FIELD TRIP: Pittock Mansion. This morning will delight with the wealth of beauty we will experience. A comfortable motor coach will take you to the Washington Park where you will tour the Pittock Mansion.
 Lunch: Enjoy lunch at the Portland City Grill located on the 30th floor of the US Bank tower, known for its incredible city views and delicious cuisine.
 Afternoon: WALKING FIELD TRIP: Walk off your lunch with your Guide through the streets of downtown as he shares his wealth of knowledge about the city and its history with you. The excursion will conclude at Powell’s Books -- an independent bookstore that fills a whole city block with more than a million new, used, and out of print books. The remainder of the afternoon is yours to explore on your own, spend time with new friends, or relax as you choose. Your Guide will have recommendations for where to go and what to do.
 Dinner: Dinner is on your own this evening to sample the city's restaurants and enjoy the cuisine you prefer.
 Evening: FREE EVENING: Use the public transportation ticket provided to do more exploring as you see and do what is most interesting to you personally.

Day 3: Free Morning and Afternoon/Lecture/Dinner/Performance
(Saturday, October 12)

 Morning: Free morning awaits you: perhaps you could visit the Portland Art Museum or the Oregon History Museum. Your Group Leader will be happy to suggest any activity.
 Lunch: Lunch on your own
 Afternoon: Meet at the hotel for a special presentation on the public art found so commonly around Portland. After the lecture get together with the group for a behind the scenes talk at the Keller Auditorium where you will attend tonight's performance.
 Dinner: Dinner at a local favorite spot.
 Evening: Oregon Ballet Theatre's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" performance goes well into the night. There will be one intermission during the performance.

Day 4: Lecture/Wrap up/Departures

The Pittock Mansion was home to Portland pioneers Henry and Georgiana Pittock from 1914 to 1919.
