Days 1-3: Arrival San Francisco, Calif.:

Arrive in San Francisco and enjoy a welcome dinner and orientation with your Road Scholar group leader and fellow participants. Journey to Muir Woods National Monument to walk in a spectacular old growth redwood forest and visit the historic harbor town of Sausalito. Board the ferry to Alcatraz Island to hear stories of “The Rock” from officers and former prisoners there. Attend one of the best farmers’ markets in the country at the San Francisco Ferry Building. Enjoy plenty of free time to experience the beauty, history and culture of the City by the Bay. Lodging: Stylish, newly renovated Fisherman’s Wharf hotel.



Day 4: Embark Grand Princess:

Take a morning field trip to the Aquarium of the Bay before boarding the ship to begin your voyage.

Ends upon embarkation of the Grand Princess for start of main program (21078). You will be staying at Radisson Hotel Fisherman's Wharf the night before.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. *Note - Participant Information Forms from your main program 21078, The Call of the Last Frontier: from San Francisco to Alaska will be used for this program. If you have sent in your form already there is no need to send another.

Taxis depart from the designated taxi zones located at the roadway center islands, on the Arrivals / Baggage Claim Level of all terminals. Uniformed taxi coordinators are stationed at the taxi zones from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. to assist passengers with questions or concerns. A $2.00 exit surcharge is included in all San Francisco taxicab meter fares for rides originating from San Francisco International Airport.

  Radisson Hotel Fisherman's Wharf (San Francisco, CA) San Francisco Airport 1: Take North 101, approximately 12 miles. 2: On North 101, shortly past the AT&T Park, take the Port of San Francisco off ramp. 3: On the Port of San Francisco off ramp, the left two lanes will become King Street. 4: Once on King street, the right two lanes become Embarcadero (after two city blocks). 5: Follow Embarcadero approximately 3 miles, across Pier 39 Embarcadero splits into two streets: Jefferson St. on the right and Beach St. to the left. 6: Get on Beach Street. 7: The hotel is located on 250 Beach Street.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival/ Welcome dinner and orientation
(Thursday, August 15)
   
 Afternoon: Independent arrivals to San Francisco and transfers to the hotel. Check-in begins at 4:00 pm. If you arrive early you may leave your luggage in a secure location at the hotel.
 Dinner: Group dinner at a nearby restaurant and orientation with your Group Leader.

Day 2: Muir Woods/Sausalito
(Friday, August 16)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the-hotel restaurant.
 Morning: Travel via private bus with a local guide to Muir Woods National Monument, part of the National Parks Service, where you can walk the trails through the redwoods.
 Lunch: Lunch in a local Sausalito restuarant.
 Afternoon: After some time to walk around Sausalito and admire the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, we will return to Fisherman's Wharf. You have the afternoon to explore on your own.
 Dinner: Experience the renowned San Francisco dining scene at a restaurant of your choosing. Head to nearby North Beach for some Italian, find a great spot for Cioppino or venture farther afield.

Day 3: Alcatraz
(Saturday, August 17)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the-hotel restaurant.
 Morning: From nearby Pier 33, board the a ferry to Alcatraz Island the storied penitentiary to learn its history. Listen to stories from officers and prisoners who lived and worked there.
 Lunch: Delve into the colors and smells of one of the top farmers markets in the country at Ferry Plaza. Not only local produce and meats are on display but also regional artisinal products and meals from some of the areas restaurants.
 Afternoon: Free time to explore on your own. Perhaps take a street car over to Golden Gate Park to visit the museums or Botanical Garden or explore the energy of America's oldest Chinatown.
 Dinner: With the group at a local restaurant.

Day 4: Aquarium/Embark Grand Princess
(Sunday, August 18)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the-hotel restaurant.
 Morning: Spend some time among the marine life as we enjoy a behind the scenes tour at the Aquarium of the Bay.
 Lunch: Prior to embarking the Grand Princess, we will enjoy lunch near the Aquarium.
