Experience all that Yosemite has to offer as you join in nature walks with park experts, go rafting along the Merced River and explore some of the Yosemite Valley’s highlights, such as Bridal Veil Fall and Sentinel Bridge. Learn about rock climbing, a popular park activity, with a local expert, and “capture” the beauty of this national park during art sessions led by professional artists.

Becky Zentmyer
Becky Zentmyer is a native Californian with a passion for the Sierra Nevada. She holds both a bachelor's and master's in geology and loves to teach about Yosemite's fiery origins. Her work experience has been varied: she has taught community college, run a mass spectrometer, taught skiing, analyzed soils and more. Currently, she works as a field educator in Yosemite teaching school-aged children about geology, ecology, park history and environmental stewardship. Becky has traveled the world, but always manages to return to the magical Sierra Nevadas.

  Description: As the closest property to Yosemite Falls, Yosemite Lodge at the Falls is an idyllic spot for families, group retreats and visitors seeking the comforts of a hotel after an exciting day exploring the wilderness. In 1998, the main complex was redesigned with an emphasis on glass and wood detailing to blend harmoniously with its surroundings. Landscaping of indigenous trees, shrubs and wildflowers further reflect the natural beauty of Yosemite Valley. An outdoor amphitheater located in the center of Yosemite Lodge at the Falls features nightly ranger/naturalist programs, slide presentations and scenic movies during the summer.

  Room amenities: Road Scholar participants will enjoy the comfort of the Lodge rooms, which open to a patio or a balcony and have a private bathroom, dressing area, activity table, telephone and television with select programming. The bedding configuration is two double beds. The lodge offers daily maid service. No cooking is allowed in the rooms. NOTE: Road Scholar participants MUST provide a credit card or cash deposit when checking in to cover any incidental expenses which may be incurred during their stay.
  Facility amenities: Yosemite Lodge at The Falls has a total of 249 rooms. It is composed of 226 "lodge rooms", 19 "standard rooms", and 4 "family rooms." Instead of having every room in a single building, the rooms are spread out over a total of 15 separate buildings, each with anywhere from nine to thirty-six rooms. There are 1 to 2 floors, depending on the building. NOTE: There are no elevators in any of the buildings. Guests must climb stairs to sleeping rooms on the 2nd floor. The Lodge offers an array of amenities and services to meet your needs. Casual dining is available at The Mountain Room Restaurant serving signature California cuisine such as steaks, seafood, chicken and pasta dishes. A full bar is also available. For cocktails and lighter fare, visit the adjacent Mountain Room Lounge. The Food Court offers hot and cold entrees and desserts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Coffee Corner, located in the Food Court has a variety of hot and cold coffee and tea drinks, bagels and pastries and hand-dipped ice cream.   Start of Program:
Hotel check-in time starts at 3:00PM. Program registration is between 4:00-5:00PM in the hotel lobby followed by orientation at 5:30PM and dinner at 6:00PM. Self introductions at 7:15PM. You will be staying at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel San Francisco Airport that night.
  End of Program:
Program ends after drop off at San Francisco Airport at approximately 3:00PM followed by return to the DoubleTree Hotel in Burlingame. Return time of 3:00PM at SFO is not guaranteed. You will be staying at Yosemite Lodge at the Falls the night before.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Each grandparent and grandchild must complete a separate Participant Information Form (PIF). On the enclosed PIF, please indicate to us the name(s) of your grandchild(ren) and traveling companion, if any. Uniformed taxi coordinators are stationed at the taxi zones from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. to assist passengers with questions or concerns.
 
Driving Directions
  From Los Angeles to Doubletree SFO Take Hwy. 101 north to Burlingame. Exit at Anza Blvd. Hotel is on the left side.
  From Oakland to Doubletree SFO Take Hwy. 80 West to 101 South. Exit at Broadway/Burlingame and go over the overpass. Turn right at the light (Old Bayshore). Then turn left at the light (Airport Blvd.). The hotel is on the right side.
  From San Franciso International Airport to Burlingame Start out going southeast on T-1 turnaround. Merge onto US-101 South via ramp on the left toward San Jose. Take the Broadway exit toward Burlingame. Take the ramp toward Overpass. Turn right onto Rollins Rd. Turn slight right onto Broadway. Turn right onto Bayshore Hwy. Turn left onto Airport Blvd. The hotel will be on your right at 835 Airport Blvd.
  From the North Via Hwy 101 to Burlingame Take US 101 South to Broadway/Burlingame exit East. Go East over the overpass; remain in the right lane. Turn right at the first light (Old Bayshore Rd.) and left at the next light onto Airport Blvd. Follow the road around until you see the hotel on your right, in approximately a quarter of a mile.
Elevation Note: Yosemite National Park has elevations ranging from 4,000 to over 8,000 feet.

Equipment Requirements: A digital camera is recommended for the Memory Folder activity as disposable cameras will not be provided since film can not be developed in the park.

Day 1: Independent Arrivals/Registration/Orientation/Introductions
(Sunday, July 21)
   
 Afternoon: HOTEL CHECK-IN: Check into the DoubleTree Hotel after 3:00PM

PROGRAM REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, go over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet which we'll review during our orientation session before dinner.

ORIENTATION: Begins before dinner. We'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures and any other administrative issues as well as answer your questions. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes, we will notify you as quickly as possible. We appreciate your understanding.

 Dinner: Dinner at hotel

Menus are contracted for the program and are designed to offer balanced, healthy meals for the participants. In addition to the regular Road Scholar meal plan, this program offers a vegetarian meal option. Unfortunately, there are no other special meal options. Participants with special dietary needs should be prepared to avoid certain foods or supplement the regular meal plan as needed.

 Evening: CROSSING POINTS: Participants and grandchildren introduce themselves to the rest of the group.

Enjoy the remainder of the evening getting to know your fellow participants and discovering what you share beyond a love of lifelong learning.

Day 2: Travel to Yosemite National Park/El Capitan/Tunnel View/Introductory Photography Class
(Monday, July 22)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant.
 Morning: FIELD TRIP: Board the motor coach for our field trip to Yosemite National Park.

For tens of thousands of years, humans have changed, and have been changed by, this place we now call Yosemite. “It is by far the grandest of all the special temples of Nature I was ever permitted to enter,” said famed naturalist John Muir. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is known for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves and biological diversity. Two wild and scenic rivers, the Tuolumne and Merced rivers, begin in the park and flow west to the Central Valley. Yosemite is one of the first wilderness parks in the United States and encompasses nearly 1200 square miles.

 Lunch: Lunch in El Portal
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: We board the motor coach and continue to Yosemite Valley with our instructor and naturalist, Becky Zentmyer. First we will stop at El Capitan for an overview of rock climbing. El Capitan is a favorite for experienced rock climbers. Rising more than 3,000 feet above the Valley floor, it is the largest monolith of granite in the world.

Then we move on to Tunnel View for a photo op of the world famous view of the Valley. Half Dome is perhaps the most iconic symbol of Yosemite. Rising nearly 5,000 feet above the Valley floor, it is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Yosemite.

Next we travel back into the Valley and check into the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls.

Day 3: Yosemite Valley Highlights/John Muir Program
(Tuesday, July 23)

Note: The walk to the base of Bridalveil Fall is 1 mile roundtrip, but up a steep trail (up to 24% slope). Part of the trail is dirt and somewhat rocky, but the rest of the trail is paved. The walk to Lower Falls is a 1/2 mile roundtrip. The walk to Mirror Lake is 2 miles roundtrip with a 200' elevation gain/loss on paved trail.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast is at the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls Food Court. All breakfast coupons will have $14 value. Purchases over $14 will be an out-of-pocket expense of individual.
 Morning: FIELD TRIP: We are joined by our naturalist, Becky Zentmyer, for an exploration of some of Yosemite Valley's highlights. Starting in the far western end of the valley, we'll walk to the base of Bridalveil Fall. Afterwards, in the central valley, we'll visit the Yosemite Chapel/ Sentinel Bridge area. Based on its “simple architecture” the Chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The bus will return to Yosemite Lodge at the Falls and the group will walk from the Lodge to view Lower Yosemite Falls.

 Lunch: Picnic lunch at Yosemite Lodge at the Falls or Happy Isles
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Ride the free Yosemite Valley Shuttle bus from Yosemite Lodge at the Falls to Happy Isles.

After Happy Isles, we will get back on the shuttle bus and ride to the Mirror Lake bus stop. Participants who want to skip the 2 mile hike to Mirror Lake may stay on the shuttle and ride it back to Yosemite Lodge at the Falls. If you join Becky on the hike to Mirror Lake, ride the shuttle back to the Lodge after the hike is over.

Day 4: Tioga Road/Hike at Crane Flat-Giant Sequoia Grove/Swim at Tenaya Lake
(Wednesday, July 24)

Note: The Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias hike at Crane Flat is about 2.5 miles roundtrip with an elevation loss/gain of 400'.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast is at the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls Food Court. All breakfast coupons will have $14 value. Purchases over $14 will be an out-of-pocket expense of individual.
 Morning: FIELD TRIP: Our on-board instructor, Becky, provides the narrative for our field trip to the gateway to Yosemite's back country along Tioga Pass to Crane Flat, Tenaya Lake, Tuolumne Meadows and Olmstead Point.

Tioga Pass Road offers a 39-mile scenic drive between Crane Flat and Tuolumne Meadows through forests and past meadows, lakes, and granite domes. Tuolumne Meadows is a large, open sub-alpine meadow graced by the winding Tuolumne River and surrounded by majestic peaks and domes. Olmsted Point looks down on Yosemite Valley from the east--and from a very different angle.

At Crane Flat we'll walk the nature trail in the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias.

 Lunch: Picnic lunch at Tenaya Lake, a magnificent High Sierra lake surrounded by granite domes, lodgepole forests and Yosemite’s vast wilderness. The lake offers the chance for the kids to take a memorable swim in the midst of the dramatic scenery.

Please be aware that there are no lifeguards on duty at Tenaya Lake. One needs to be able to swim in order to go into the lake. Grandparents will be responsible for watching their grandchildren if they go swimming in the lake.

Day 5: Merced River Rafting/Photography walk
(Thursday, July 25)

 Breakfast: Breakfast is at the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls Food Court. All breakfast coupons will have $14 value. Purchases over $14 will be an out-of-pocket expense of individual.
 Morning: HANDS ON EXPERIENCE: "The most relaxing way to enjoy the summer in Yosemite" is on a raft on the Merced River. See the sights of Yosemite Valley from a different perspective--on a stillwater rafting trip down the Merced River. By summer, the river has calmed from its rushing, winter-snow run-off pace and provides a slow-moving and sunny course to travel the length of the valley. Enjoy unique views of Half Dome and Yosemite Falls, away from the hustle and bustle of the summer valley traffic, as well as sandy beaches for swimming.

RIVER RAFTING GUIDELINES Rafting trip dependent on river conditions. The length of the Yosemite rafting season changes from year to year and depends on river depth, water temperature and climate.

Rafts hold four adults and are equipped with paddles and the mandatory personal flotation devices.

Rafting is not recommended for non-swimmers.

Since rafts are not guided by rafting staff, two "capable paddlers" are required per raft, including at least one adult per boat. Children under 50 lbs. are not permitted in rental rafts. We are sorry, but the raft company cannot make any exceptions to these rules. A 'capable paddler' is at least 5 feet tall and 12 years old.

The trip covers one three-mile trip down the river, personal floatation devices for each person, two paddles, and a return trip by shuttle to the Curry Village Recreation Center.

Rafts are available on a first-come, first-serviced basis.

 Afternoon: CLASS: Photography walk to capture iconic landmarks of the Park.

Free time to further explore the park, hike some of the many paths and trails the park offers or revisit favorite spots.

 Evening: Children make memory folders after dinner and then enjoy a NPS ranger program in the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls Amphitheatre with grandparents.

 Morning: Board the motor coach for the return trip to San Francisco Airport and the DoubleTree Hotel in Burlingame.
 Lunch: Lunch en route to SFO
 Afternoon: Program ends after the drop off at San Francisco Airport at approximately 3:00PM, followed by the return to the DoubleTree Hotel in Burlingame. The return time of 3:00PM at SFO is not guaranteed.
