Day 11: Roatan Island (Honduras):

Swim with dolphins or snorkel for colorful species of tropical fish, or explore the reef in a glass-bottom boat.



Day 12: Belize City (Belize):

Before a festive New Year’s Eve on the ship, spend the day exploring the considerable Victorian architecture, or see how wildlife is cherished at the Belize Zoo.



Days 13-14: Costa Maya (Mexico) / Cozumel:

Experience a modern city modeled after an ancient Mayan city, and enjoy Cozumel’s pristine beaches and snorkeling.



Days 15-17: At Sea / Key West (Fla.) / disembark Miami, departure:

  Start of Program:
This program begins at 6:00pm in Miami with a program orientation at the program hotel. You will be staying at Courtyard by Marriott Miami Airport South Hotel that night.
  End of Program:
This program ends after breakfast on board the ship in Miami, Florida. You will be staying at Crystal Serenity the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. **IMPORTANT INFORMATION** All participants MUST register online with Crystal Cruises. To register go to checkin.crystalcruises.com to access the Priority Check-in and Planning Center. To log in, you need type in your first/last names as they appear on your passport and your booking number (which appears on your cruise confirmation or can be obtained from Road Scholar). You will need to enter your contact and passport information in order to register.   Location:  Miami
  Transportation to site: The Courtyard Miami Airport South Hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to/from the Miami airport, which departs the airport every 15 minutes. Upon arrival in Miami, there is no need to call the hotel, as the shuttle circles every 15 minutes on the departure level (2nd level) 5am to 1am daily. Look for the red and white shuttle with the Marriott logo, marked with the Miami Airport Marriott, Courtyard and Residence Inn logos on the side (this information is taken from the hotel website and is subject to change without prior notice).
  From End of Program
  Location:  Aboard the Crystal Serenity
  Transportation from site: There will be one transfer from the ship to the airport upon disembarkation in Miami. The ship is scheduled to arrive in Miami at approximately 8:00 am. Disembarkation will commence once the ship has cleared customs and immigration procedures. We don't recommend booking flights that depart Miami earlier than 12:00 to allow enough time.

 Arrive To: Arrive in Miami. Make your own way to the program hotel using the complimentary hotel shuttle.

Day 2: Miami / Embarkation on Crystal Serenity
(Saturday, December 21)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: Get to know Miami like an insider. We'll take the day to drive leisurely around to get to know the city and surroundings, including Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and of course, South Beach! Some of the places we will visit are South Beach and the historic Art Deco District, where we stop for a stroll on Ocean Drive. We'll cross over to the mainland and drive through downtown Miami and on to Coconut Grove.
 Lunch: At a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: After lunch, we'll visit the lovely Plymouth Congregational Church and walk through the magnificent lobby of the historical Biltmore Hotel, swing by the remarkable Venetian Pool and then immerse ourselves in Little Havana, where we will enjoy a Cuban coffee and watch the old-timers playing dominos. Transfer to the cruise port for embarkation on the Crystal Serenity.

Day 3: Cruising the Atlantic Ocean
(Sunday, December 22)

Note: Days at sea are a mix of group and independent activities. Enjoy exclusive Road Scholar presentations from your study leader in addition to the lectures and activities offered by the cruise line. Independent onboard activities, such as guest speakers, classes and entertainment will vary from cruise to cruise. As you approach your departure date, you can log into Crystal's Priority Check-in and Planning Center (PCPC) for more information on the activities available during your specific sailing.

 Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: Although there are numerous spots on land that invite relaxation and exploration, the Turks and Caicos are really all about the water. More specifically, they're all about what's beneath the water. These islands have some of the best diving and snorkeling anywhere, courtesy of one of the world's largest network of coral reefs, easily accessible off the islands' shores. One reef, aptly called the Wall, is particularly spectacular; it drops 7,000 feet-straight down. Between the shore and the reef, the water is only waist deep, providing a perfect place for beginning snorkelers to get their feet wet.
 Lunch: At leisure on board the ship in the Crystal Dining Room, the Lido Café, or the Trident Grill, or you may choose to eat independently ashore. Some Crystal shore excursions will include lunch (depending on the length).

 Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: The capital of Curaçao, is characterized by story-book Dutch architecture, waterfront promenades, fine shopping and a colorful floating market. Located in the southern Caribbean, just 38 miles north of Venezuela, a harmonious blend of Dutch, Caribbean, African and South American cultures makes Willemstad unique among the Caribbean ports of call.
 Lunch: At leisure on board the ship in the Crystal Dining Room, the Lido Café, or the Trident Grill, or you may choose to eat independently ashore. Some Crystal shore excursions will include lunch (depending on the length).

 Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: A rich history is exists in Santa Marta, Colombia, revealed in the massive, whitewashed cathedral, which is the country’s oldest, and in the founding of the city itself, which dates to 1525, making Santa Marta South America’s oldest city. A faded colonial heritage is being brightened with a refurbishment of the colonial district, while Simon Bolivar’s revered status as Latin America’s hero of independence is forever enshrined at the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, the hacienda where he spent his last days. You will want to spend every moment you can discovering the city’s historical sites and beautiful location. The fashionable beach resort of El Rodadero beckons from the south. From the north, the fishing village of Taganga invites a visit. Farther up the coast, the protected coastline of Parque Nacional Tayrona summons trekkers and nature lovers to marvel at views of the world’s tallest coastal mountain range and glimpse the area’s wildlife.

 Morning: EXCLUSIVE ROAD SCHOLAR FIELD TRIP: Depart from the pier to visit some of the most important monuments of this historic city. The first stop will be made at the Convent of La Popa built at the beginning of the 17th century on the hill of the same name. From there a magificent view of the city and the bay can be seen. The tour will then continue on to San Felipe's Fort, built in the 17th century to protect the city from marauding invaders. Stop here for a photostop and explanation of the site. After this short stop, continue to the colorful handicraft market of Las Bovedas, where you will have a short time to see the local artisan displays. Stroll through the walled city with a local architect who will explain the colorful colonial architecture of the old city. Arrive at the Convent of San Pedro Claver, named in honor of the Spanish born monk who was known as the "Apostles of Blacks". The tree filled courtyard of the convent houses religious and pre-Colombian artifacts. You will have some free time at the Plaza de San Pedro before returning to the pier.

 Afternoon: Your afternoon is free to explore Cartagena on your own.

 Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: On Central America's Roatan Island off Honduras, you can aim a point-and-shoot camera in almost any direction and get a beautiful picture. Skies are wide expanses of blue. Water is a transparent turquoise. Beaches are the classic smooth white, edged by lush growths of palms. Even if you are no shutterbug, you will find many things to do. Water activities include diving, snorkeling and swimming with the dolphins. If you prefer to stay dry, you can tour the reef in a glass-bottom boat, go into town to shop for island crafts, or see the butterfly and floral gardens.
 Lunch: At leisure on board the ship in the Crystal Dining Room, the Lido Café, or the Trident Grill, or you may choose to eat independently ashore. Some Crystal shore excursions will include lunch (depending on the length).

 Morning: EXCLUSIVE ROAD SCHOLAR FIELD TRIP: Meet your local guide at the pier and depart for the Baboon Sanctuary. Here you will learn about their work to protect the Howler Monkey. Get up close and personal with these fascinating animals.
 Lunch: At a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: After lunch, continue on to see the Mayan Ruins of Altun Ha, May for "Rock Stone Water", where the famous Jade Head (Kinich Ahau) was discovered. Altun Ha was a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period, as well as a vital trade center that linked the Caribbean shores with other Maya centers in the interior.

 Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: Adventure, archaeology, water, sun and beach. These are all to be found in and around Costa Maya, the Caribbean's first port planned solely for cruise guests. Designed to resemble an ancient Mayan city, Costa Maya features three grand pavilions, where you can see folkloric shows, observe local artisans creating their works of art, and witness cultural and culinary events. Within easy reach of the port are ancient cities boasting impressive temples and fascinating archeological sites. And you needn't venture far from port to enjoy a range of water sports, including diving and snorkeling amid the world's second-largest coral reef.

 Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: Just 11 miles off the eastern coast of Mexico lies Cozumel, the country's largest island and the gem of the Caribbean for water sports. Relax and bask in the sun on pristine palm-lined beaches or snorkel amid intricate coral formations at nearby Palancar Reef. On the island's west coast lies the bustling town of San Miguel, which boasts deluxe hotels, inviting shops and tempting restaurants. Inland lies Cobá, a splendid reminder of a civilization that existed thousands of years ago. Closer at hand lies Tulum, a massive fortress built in 564 AD and the only Mayan site to overlook the Caribbean Sea.

Day 15: Cruising the Gulf of Mexico
(Friday, January 3)
   
 Breakfast: At leisure on board in the Crystal Dining Room (open seating) or the more casual Lido Café. Room Service is also available 24 hours a day.
 Morning: Road Scholar Lecture #7: Mayans and Mangroves: The Jewels of Costa Maya, Mexico
 Lunch: At leisure on board the ship in the Crystal Dining Room, the Lido Café, or the Trident Grill.
 Afternoon: Road Scholar Lecture #8: The Evolution of Motion Sickness INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES: Design your day as you wish: pamper yourself at the spa or work out at Crystal's state-of-the-art fitness center; teach yourself something new with computer lessons, or learn about art, history and worldy destinations with Crystal's engaging celebrity entertainers and speakers; sneak away to watch a recently-released movie, or simply relax by one of the tranquil pools. In the evening, dine on inspired cuisine at one of Crystal's specalty restaurants, enjoy special wine-makers dinners or see a lavish Broadway style production.
 Dinner: Join your study leader for a group dinner in the Crystal Dining Room.

Day 16: Key West, Florida

 Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: In the past, Key West was the winter home of Ernest Hemingway, John James Audubon and President Truman. Today it is a stylish retreat for writers and artists. Its atmosphere is reminiscent of the Caribbean, yet it is the southernmost town of the continental United States. Take a stroll along Duval Street, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, or explore its interesting art galleries and boutiques.
 Lunch: At leisure on board the ship in the Crystal Dining Room, the Lido Café, or the Trident Grill, or you may choose to eat independently ashore. Some Crystal shore excursions will include lunch (depending on the length).
 Afternoon: Continue independent exploration of Key West.
 Dinner: Join your study leader for a group dinner in the Crystal Dining Room.

Day 17: Miami, Florida
(Sunday, January 5)
   
 Breakfast: At leisure on board in the Crystal Dining Room (open seating) or the more casual Lido Café. Room Service is also available 24 hours a day.
 Morning: Disembark the ship and transfer to the airport. There will be one transfer to the airport for all participants.
