Experience the renowned Glimmerglass Festival in what The Sunday Times of London calls “the most magical of settings” for opera: the Alice Busch Opera Theater on Otsego Lake. This small, lovely lake near Cooperstown is better known as the “Glimmerglass” of James Fenimore Cooper’s stories like “The Last of the Mohicans.” Share in the excitement of live productions enhanced by background lectures from experts in the world of opera. Experience a world where music is truly in the air as you delight in exciting performances.

Activity Particulars

Motel rooms are at the top of a steep slope where the parking lot is located. The breakfast/meeting room is at the bottom of the slope on the lake level, requiring daily walks down and back up (cars not allowed). Our trolley to Glimmerglass departs from the upper level. For those who would like to spend more time walking, the distance from the motel to Glimmerglass is 0.8 miles each way.

Cooperstown

Fans from around the world complete their pilgrimages to the National Baseball Hall of Fame here, but amid the fields where Abner Doubleday famously invented the national pastime, one finds a charming village of museums and, on the shores of Otsego Lake, the renowned Glimmerglass Opera presenting some of the country’s finest productions each summer.

Daniel Egan

Daniel Egan has degrees in music theory from St. Olaf, the Eastman School of Music and Yale, where he is on faculty. He has appeared as soloist or ensemble singer with the New York Philharmonic, Opera Orchestra of New York, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and was in the permanent ensemble at New York City Opera. His recordings include “Sweeney Todd” with the New York Philharmonic and backup vocals for Patti Page’s "Live at Carnegie Hall: The 50th Anniversary Concert.” Both earned Grammy nominations.

Day 2: Opera performance: David Lang's : "PASSIONS, The Little Match Girl Passion"
(Saturday, August 3)

 Morning: An introductory lecture begins your Glimmerglass adventure.
 Lunch: Enjoy lunch in the meeting room

 Evening: Performance: "the little match girl passion" (David Lang, 2007) Directed by Francesca Zambello Pulitzer Prize-winning one-act "the little match girl passion" is based on a fable by Hans Christian Andersen, with a libretto by Lang that is influenced by the format and journey of Bach's St. Matthew's Passion. It employs an ensemble of four singers and percussion to tell the story of a poor, young girl who, despite great adversity, retains her purity of spirit. AND Stabat Mater (Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, 1736) A meditation on the suffering of a mother—Mary, the mother of Jesus—as she watches her son suffer and die. Its text is taken from a medieval poem, set by a number of composers. Rising choreographer Jessica Lang will direct and choreograph the production, giving life and movement to Mary’s emotional journey.

Day 3: Performance: Richard Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman"
(Sunday, August 4)

 Morning: Opera lecture in our meeting room overlooking beautiful Lake Otsego
 Lunch: Have lunch on the opera grounds
 Afternoon: Attend the preview and performance of "The Flying Dutchman" by Richard Wagner Inspired in part by a harrowing ocean voyage, Wagner based his fourth opera on the story of a ghostly vessel doomed to traverse the seas for eternity. In The Flying Dutchman the ship’s captain finds redemption when a young woman proves her love by abandoning her life for him. Glimmerglass’s new production is directed by Francesca Zambello. An internationally recognized director of opera and theater, Francesca Zambello has recently been awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government for her contribution to French culture and the Russian Federation's medal for Service to Culture. Other honors for her work include three Olivier Awards from the London Society of Theaters and two Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical and Best Opera. She has also received the award for Best Company Achievement. The French Grand Prix des Critiques was awarded to her twice for her work at the Paris Opera. Other awards include Best Production in Japan, the Palme d'Or in Germany, the Golden Mask in Russia and the Helpmann Award in Australia. Francesca Zambello most recently developed and directed the world premiere of Christopher Theofanidis' Heart of a Soldier for the San Francisco Opera, where she served as Artistic Advisor from 2006-2011

 Lunch: Lunch on your own on the grounds of the opera
 Afternoon: Attend the preview and performance of "Camelot," Lerner and Loewe’s musical version of The Once and Future King follows King Arthur, Guenevere and Sir Lancelot as they strive to pursue their passions and embody chivalric ideals. The tuneful, popular score includes such favorites as “If Ever I Would Leave You.” Starring 2013 Artist in Residence Nathan Gunn, the production will be presented with full orchestra and no amplification.
