Philadelphia is not only one of the most historic cities in America, it’s also one of the most “happening” with fascinating things to see and do around every corner. In addition to what’s going on during your weekend program — when you’ll have a block of free time to explore on your own — each program will include the following highlights plus a special entertainment event from current offerings.




Highlights

• Experience the city's mystique through its amazing murals, a visit to the “Littlest Street” and First Friday when eclectic art galleries in Old City welcome one and all.
• Visit the “Magic Gardens” that preserve Isaiah Zagar's unique mosaic art in a fully tiled indoor space and massive outdoor mosaic sculpture garden with folk art statues, bicycle wheels, colorful glass bottles, hand-made tiles, and thousands of glittering mirrors.
• Stroll along the banks of the Schuylkill River to see and learn about the world famous Fairmount Water Works that looks like Greek temples.

It is housed in an architecturally significant building constructed in the 1920's in the then-popular Georgian Revival style, for Provident National Bank. Our meals are in Davios restaurant (one of Philadelphia's finest). This stylish, upscale restaurant offers a variety of Northern Italian specialties. Philadelphia Magazine "Best of Philly" Award 2000, 2004, 2005. Wine Spectator Magazine "Award of Excellence" 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006. Day 1: Registration/ Orientation/ Dinner/First Friday in Old City
(Friday, September 6)
   
 Afternoon: Registration at 4:00 PM, followed by orientation.
 Dinner: Dinner at Davios restaurant located pon the lobby floor of the hotel.
 Evening: This evening we will attend the First Friday stroll in historic Old City. Enjoy the eclectic composition of art galleries and boutique stories which welcome you with wine and cheese as you stroll from door to door. A very festive atmosphere

Day 2: Lecture on Philadelphia history or art. Field Trip to the Magic Garden/Barnes Foundation/Free Evening Museum/Philadelphia Museum of Art/Theater Performance
(Saturday, September 7)

Note: moderate walking around the Magic Garden, Barnes Foundation has sitting benches in each gallery and also wheelchairs.
   
 Breakfast: At Davios restaurant - breakfast is an upscale Continental with bagels, pastries, fruit bowl, variety of juices, granola, box cereals,yogurt, and hard boiled eggs.
 Morning: Early Philadelphia History or art lecture followed by field trip to The Magic Garden. Philadelphia's Magic Gardens is a mosaicked visionary art environment, gallery, and community arts center that preserves, interprets, and provides access to Isaiah Zagar's unique mosaic art environment and his public murals. The Magic Gardens site, Zagar's largest artwork, includes a fully tiled indoor space and a massive outdoor mosaic sculpture garden that spans half a block on Philadelphia's famous South Street. Inside, visitors can view folk art statues, bicycle wheels, colorful glass bottles, Zagar's hand-made tiles, and thousands of glittering mirrors. The installation pays tribute to Zagar's artistic influences, along with community and personal experiences. read a review: "Visionary is the word in regards to artistry that describes Isaiah Zagar.  Lunch: Lunch out
 Afternoon: Our afternoon is a delight with entry to The Barnes on the Parkway. Between 1912 and 1951, Albert C. Barnes assembled one of the finest collections of impressionist, post-impressionist, and early modern paintings in the world. Acquiring works by some of the most daring artists of the time Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Chaim Soutine, and Vincent van Gogh, among others?Barnes marked himself as a collector of great ambition and audacity.
 Dinner: Dinner on your own to savor Philadelphia's offering of great restaurants.
 Evening: Free evening for you to enjoy a Fringe Festival offering

Day 3: Liberty Bell/ Independence Hall/ Barnes on the Parkway/ Evening Lecture TBA
(Sunday, September 8)
   
 Breakfast: Davios Restaurant
 Morning: Morning lecture on The Collections of The Rodin and The Philadelphia Museum of Art by an art educator
 Morning: Following the lecture we will go to The Rodin Museum on the Parkway houses the largest collections of Rodins outside of Paris. Marvel at the new garden with its array of outdoor original Rodin sculptures.
 Lunch: lunch on own at the Art Museum
 Afternoon: We will arrive at The Philadelphia Museum of Art for you to eat lunch on your own and then have the opportunity to explore its many galleries spanning centuries of art on your own. The early morning lecture will highlight the most important and a few delights of the collections of antiquity and paintings.
 Dinner: At hotel or at a popular restaurant.
 Evening: Evening lecture TBA

Day 4: Morning lecture/ lunch/ program ends.

 Breakfast: Hotel dining room. Checkout is 12 Noon. Bags can be stored with the concierge.
 Morning: We will be listening to a lecture on Philadelphia architecture.
 Lunch: Enjoy a substantial lunch at Davios at 11:30 AM. This farewell lunch gives you an opportunity to share your thoughts and exchange addresses with your newly found travel friends. Checkout is 12 Noon. Bags can be stored with the concierge.
 Afternoon: Program ends at 1:00 PM
