In daily classes with a professional chef, study basic cooking techniques and Downeast culinary history as you learn to prepare meals from Maine’s regional repertoire, including seafood chowders and the famed lobster. Conversations with local organic farmers and lobstermen offer new perspectives on Maine’s culinary favorites. Sail aboard an 118-foot historic schooner and drop by Roosevelt International Park on Campobello Island for maritime tradition. Local guests and fresh foods prepared by participants highlight evening meals.

Kilby House Circa 1887: tel. 207-853-0989 122 Water Street Overlooking scenic Passamaquoddy Bay, this restored Queen Anne Victorian inn offers ambiance furnished with antiques and family heirlooms, a fireplace in the drawing room, and grand piano in the music room. It is an easy walk to the shops and restaurants of the historic downtown waterfront. 2. Milliken House Circa 1846: Tel. 207-853-2955, 29 Washington Street The Milliken House Bed and Breakfast, located just 2 blocks from Eastport’s historic waterfront, offers a complimentary glass of port or sherry in the large double living room, containing two marble fireplaces where there is cable television, board games, and a fire on coldish days. There are five guest rooms on the second and third floors, uniquely furnished with lovely Victorian Renaissance and Eastlake furniture and decorated with the mementos left behind by the Milliken family. 3. Todd House Circa 1775: tel. 207-853-2328, 1 Capen Avenue Built on Todd's Head during the Revolutionary War, the Todd House is a classic New England full Cape Cod-style with a massive center chimney and a unique "good morning" staircase and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The spacious yard affords an ever-changing view of the bay and its islands. 4. Weston House Circa 1810: tel. 207-853-2907, 26 Boynton Street Located on a hill overlooking Passamaquoddy Bay, you will find large lodging accommodations that are furnished with collections of antiques and oriental rugs. This house has offered hospitality to numerous travelers through the years. In fact, John James Audubon stayed here while awaiting passage to Labrador in 1833.

Service runs to/from Bangor once daily, leaving Bangor at 3:15 pm and arriving in Perry at 6:30 pm. Program coordinator needs to be notified for transport to Eastport (207-853-4877)Cost for Perry-Bangor transport $15 per person. WCCC shuttle will run from Bangor to Eastport on Sunday, leaving Bangor approximately 2:00 pm, arriving in Eastport about 4:30. The purpose of the shuttle is to ensure that everyone will make the whole program, so it's necessary that your flight arrive by 2:00.The shuttle will leave Eastport at close of program on Friday, arriving in Bangor approximately 1:30 pm, This service is for Road Scholar participants only. Direct transportation to/from site without extra stops. Reservations required.
 
Driving Directions
  Bangor, Maine From Interstate 95, take exit 182A and follow signs to Bar Harbor and Route 1, which will put you on I-395 for 3 miles. Take Exit 4 and follow directional signs to Route 9. Stay on Route 9 until it ends at Route 1 near Calais. Turn right on Route 1 and follow Route 1 east/south through Calais, continuing south approximately 20 miles through Robbinston and Perry. At the intersection of Route 1 and Route 190, you will make a left and drive into Eastport (about 7 miles). Route 190 dead ends at Water Street in downtown Eastport. You will be given specific directions to your assigned inn in your information packet.
  From the South via Route 1 From the south, travel north on Route 1. Travel through towns such as Ellsworth, Machias, Pembroke and Perry. When you reach the intersection of Route 1 and Route 190 in Perry, make a right on Route 190 and follow the above directions.

Day 1: Arrival and registration/Welcome dinner..

 Afternoon: Check into your assigned Bed 'n Breakfast and pick up registration packets.
 Dinner: Vans will pick you up at your Inn for transport to Eastport restaurant for welcome dinner with Program Coordinator and Chef Audrey Patterson.
 Evening: Orientation which will include a review of class contents and an overview of week's activities

Day 2: Explore Historic Eastport, Monday cooking class
(Monday, September 2)

Note: We'll seek out the best of Eastport. Think soups and chowders.
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy a hearty home-cooked breakfast at your Inn..
 Morning: Vans will pick you up for transport to Raye's Mustard Factory where you will enjoy a visit to this historic landmark, marking the early herring industry in the Bay. We will continue our quest for a look at Eastport's rich history by exploring the Maritime museum.
 Lunch: Enjoy lunch at the dockside Chowder House restaurant in Eastport. You will enjoy the panoramic views of Head Harbor Passage.
 Afternoon: We'll head out to a visit with an organic farmer and get some insight into what works and what doesn't. Then we'll travel to the cooking classes at Blueberry Point Chefs, located in Perry, Maine, on the shore of beautiful Passamaquoddy Bay, located in a picturesque cottage on a unique 150 acre blueberry farm. The first class will begin with a session featuring authentic Maine chowders and fish stews. These are hands-on classes. You will be working along Chef Audrey Patterson for a lesson in these soups which are simple and delicious. Class content may be adjusted to include student selections.
 Dinner: Enjoy the camaraderie of sharing the fine food and wine with fellow students. Expect good conversation and an occasional local guest.

Day 3: Sail aboard the schooner, Ada C. Lore. Tuesday cooking class.
(Tuesday, September 3)

Note: Sail aboard the Ida C. Lore, Fish or Fowl tonight?
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy a hearty home-cooked breakfast at your Inn.
 Morning: Van will transport you to Eastport's breakwater where we will catch a cruise aboard The Ida C. Lore, an 92' wooden schooner. We'll sail up Passamaquoddy Bay, amid spectacular scenery and plentiful wildlife. Look for eagles, seals, porpoises, and herring weirs.
 Lunch: Enjoy lunch at one of Eastport's fun array of speciality restaurants--there's Rosie's hot dogs, authentic Greek and Mexican food, coffee and sandwiches at Dastardly Dick's/Rupunzel's shop, goodies from the Moose Island Bakery.
 Afternoon: Classes continue at Blueberry Point chefs. Discover wonderful, easy recipies for hectic schedules. This forum will highlight fresh, healthy foods for a healthy lifestyle. Class content may change depending on student selections.
 Dinner: Enjoy the camaraderie of sharing the fine food and wine with fellow students. Expect good conversation and the occasional local guest.

Day 4: Campobello Island, West Quoddy Head, and Wednesday's cooking class.
(Wednesday, September 4)

Note: Explore FDR's summer "cottage" and visit the easternmost lighthouse in the continental US. Think comfort food.
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy a hearty home-cooked breakfast at your Inn.
 Morning: Travel by van to visit the West Quoddy Light and Museum, the eastern-most point of land in the continental U.S. You will enjoy spectacular views of a rugged coast overlooking Canadian Campobello Island and Grand Manan. Traveling on through Lubec, Maine, we will visit Roosevelt International Park, the summer home of the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
 Lunch: Enjoy a lunch at a waterfront restaurant in the quaint village of Lubec.
 Afternoon: Classes continue at Blueberry Point Chefs. Today's class features a presentation on "comfort foods" for easy entertaining. Chef Audrey will innovate and amaze. These are hand's on classes and may always be adjusted to include student requests.
 Dinner: Enjoy the camaraderie of sharing the fine food and wine with fellow students. Expect good conversation and the occasional local guest.

Day 5: Organic farm visit, seafood market, and Thursday's cooking class
(Thursday, September 5)

Note: Think Lobster.
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy a hearty, home-cooked breakfast at your Inn.
 Morning: We'll visit Quoddy Bay Lobster for a look at the life of a lobstering family and a growing seafood business. Sara will intorduce us to the life of a lobster and share her experiences of raising a family on the bay.
 Lunch: We'll lunch at Quoddy Bay Lobster, Bangor Metrro's choice for best lobster roll in Washington County, Maine.
 Afternoon: Enjoy a couple hours of free time before returning to Blueberry Point Chefs for a cooking class which will feature working with a selection of Maine's renowned seafood, which will include our famous Maine lobster.
 Dinner: Enjoy a Maine seafood feast, sharing fine food and wine with fellow students. Expect good conversation.
 Evening: Graduation festivities.

Day 6: Explore Eastport and Bid Farewell
(Friday, September 6)

Note: Leisurely breakfast and some extras in Eastport
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy a hearty home-cooked breakfast at your Inn.
 Morning: After enjoying a leisurely breakfast at your inn, finish exploring Eastport on your own and catch all of those highlights you saw but didn't get time to work in during your stay in this beautiful seaside village.
 Lunch: Bid a fond farewell to new found friends and promise to come back another time.
