Rob Ellison

Rob Ellison grew up in Hilton Head, and graduated from Mercer University where he played tennis. After a career in Denver, Colo., as a stockbroker, he returned to Hilton Head to teach tennis clinics at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. PTR certified, Rob has coached numerous tennis teams, including the 2004 state champion women's USTA and several champion Hilton Head High School teams. Rob won the regional Banana Open 4.5 singles division in 2010, and played on state championship adult United States Tennis Association (USTA) league teams in 2011.

  Start of Program:
Check in at the Omni Oceanfront Resort between 4-5 p.m. Ask concierge or view announcements for Road Scholar registration location. The evening meal and orientation will follow. You will be staying at Omni Oceanfront Resort that night.
  End of Program:
Program ends around 10 a.m. Check out from the resort by 11:00 a.m. You will be staying at Omni Oceanfront Resort the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. The only required document is a photo ID such as a driver's license.

Parking information will be included in the confirmation packet. The resorts shuttle will be available to/from the housing facility to the tennis center.

Driving Directions
  From Interstate 95 Directions to our Hotel Driving Direction from North or South take I-95 to Exit #8. Take Hwy 278 East for 25 miles towards Hilton Head Island. After crossing the Island bridge, continue on Business 278 to Palmetto Dunes, which is located on the left hand side 8 miles from the Island bridge. Make a left hand turn at traffic light into Palmetto Dunes, and after one mile you will arrive at a guard gate. State that you are a guest of the Omni Oceanfront Resort and obtain a pass and continue. The Resort is located on the left side. No motorcycles permitted.
Elevation Note: Hilton Head is just above sea level.

Equipment Requirements: Tennis rackets, tennis balls and any comfort items such as hats, bug spray, sunscreen, etc. you consider necessary.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival
(Sunday, November 10)
   
 Afternoon: Arrive at Omni Oceanfront Resort for registration and room assignment between the hours of 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. Ask front desk staff or concierge service and stop by the announcement postings for Road Scholar registration room assignments. Program packets will be issued at this time. Further instructions will be given during program registration.
 Dinner: A plated dinner will be served in our private conference area of the resort at 6:00 p.m. followed by an introduction to Hilton Head and orientation.

Day 2: Tennis Instruction-Groundstrokes & Volleys /Tennis Play/Overview of Hilton Head's History
(Monday, November 11)
   
 Breakfast: Continental breakfast will be served at Big Jim's of the Robert Trent Jones Clubhouse in the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort immediately adjacent to the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.
 Morning: Palmetto Dunes Resort is the ultimate destination for anyone who wants to improve his or her tennis skills. At the Tennis Center you'll find 23 clay and 2 Nova ProBounce courts (eight of which are lighted for night play). There's also a helpful, energetic staff whose primary goal is to make your week a rewarding one. First, we will work on lateral movement groundstrokes with emphesis on strokes, balance, and placement. Next, we switch to lateral and forward movement volleys with emphesis on strokes and placement. End the morning with 'Live Ball' drills with groundstrokes and volleys.
 Lunch: Enjoy a light lunch back at Big Jim's.
 Afternoon: Our group will have a great time of afternoon tennis play as part of the program.
 Dinner: A plated dinner will be served in our private conference area of the Omni Resort.
 Evening: This evening's program will present to you an timeline overview of Hilton Head Island. Hilton Head Island’s history can be traced back to Native American occupation 4,000 years ago. Learn about the island’s past including the Plantation Era, Civil War and the modern development into a world-class resort destination and home to 30,000 full time residents.

Day 3: Tennis Instruction - Net approach/Transition into the net /Tennis Play
(Tuesday, November 12)
   
 Breakfast: Continental breakfast will be served at Big Jim's of the Robert Trent Jones Clubhouse in the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort immediately adjacent to the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.
 Morning: Start your morning off right with groundstrokes, approach shots, mid court volleys and closing volleys - then, learn when to hit cross court and when to hit down the line based on opponents positioning. Sharpen your skills with more 'Live Ball' drills while learning where to hit groundstrokes and volleys based on opponents' positioning!
 Lunch: Take a break back at Big Jim's for a light lunch.
 Afternoon: Put all of your morning practice to good use during an afternoon of tennis play as part of the program.
 Dinner: Enjoy a delicious plated dinner served in our private conference room of the Omni Resort.
 Evening: The Loggerhead Sea Turtle uses Hilton Head Island’s beaches each summer for nesting. Come hear more about this threatened species and the ways that Hilton Head Island – and you – can help them survive. Presented by the Coastal Discovery Museum, manager of the Town of Hilton Head Island Sea Turtle Protection Project.

Day 4: Tennis Instruction-Overheads, Lobs, Covering for lobs/Moving with partner/Free afternoon/Free evening
(Wednesday, November 13)
   
 Breakfast: Continental breakfast will be served at Big Jim's of the Robert Trent Jones Clubhouse in the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort immediately adjacent to the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.
 Morning: Our group will meet again at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center for group instruction with opportunities for individual instruction. Learn about lobbing the net player to put opponents on the defensive. Next, switch to "Overheads" - focusing on when to hit at the net player or when to hit away from the net player. Get ready for more 'Live Ball' drilling using lobs and overheads!
 Lunch: Relax back at Big Jim's while enjoying a light lunch.
 Afternoon: Free time for exploring on your own for the many exciting adventures Hilton Head Island has to offer.
 Dinner: Wednesday evening is free to give participants a chance to visit Hilton Head Island's many great attractions and enjoy the local cuisine. Dinner on your own.
 Evening: The evening will be free to enjoy the entertainment possibilities Hilton Head has to offer.

Day 5: Tennis Instruction - Serving, Returning serve, Signaling/Poaching on the serve /Tennis Play/Presentation
(Thursday, November 14)
   
 Breakfast: Continental breakfast will be served at Big Jim's of the Robert Trent Jones Clubhouse in the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort immediately adjacent to the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.
 Morning: Meet once again as a group at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center for group instruction with opportunities for individual instruction. Today, learn where to hit return of serve on first serve and second serve. Then, find out where to serve or serve and volley. Study using signals to poach. Finally, watch and critique doubles play.
 Lunch: Enjoy one last light lunch back at Big Jim's.
 Afternoon: Our final afternoon of group play will put into practice all of the elements you've learned throughout the week.
 Dinner: Savor the evening with another delicious plated dinner served in our private conference area of the Omni Resort.
 Evening: An Entertaining Evening shall be had by all!

Day 6: Program Wrap Up
(Friday, November 15)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served at the Omni Resort prior to our week in review.
 Morning: Share the week in review with a question & answer session lead by our lead instructor. The program concludes with this wrap-up session. Check-out from the resort is at 11 a.m. Individual departures will follow. Lunch is not included in this program.
