Three Bogeymen of English Literature

Take an informative and entertaining look at three notorious fictional villains and the geniuses who created them: Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice” by Shakespeare; Barabbas in “The Jew of Malta” by Marlowe; and Fagin in “Oliver Twist” by Dickens.



’80s America

During the 1980s, America faced jarring political and cultural changes internally and a dramatically altered international scene. Discuss the impact of these transformations with the aid of movies and TV programs from the era.



Imagining the Perfect Society

Examine utopian ideals since the 15th Century — in particular, the vision of American writers, explorers, and religious figures. Discuss films, novels, songs, and artwork to learn how utopian aspirations have shaped our culture and sense of identity.




Dallas (Pennsylvania)

The historic Wyoming Valley on the north branch of the Susquehanna River is home to the community of Dallas, as well as the Misericordia University. Established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1924, it was the region’s first four-year college.

The campus offers short walking distance to the Bevevino Library, Anderson Sports Center for use of the gyms fitness center, pool and racketball courts. 9:00 am check-out in Gildea Hall (breakfast at 7 am). You will be staying at Gildea Hall the night before.

Free parking on site. Parking available at dormitories, townhouses, dining facilities and classrooms.

  Train or bus availability: We can be accessed by bus through Martz Trailways and Greyhound bus lines in Wilkes-Barre. A shuttle is available from the bus terminal to the college.

  From 81 South and North Take exit 170B Wilkes-Barre. Exit ramp merges with Route 309 North. Stay on 309 For 9 miles into Dallas. In Dallas, continue on Route 309 North. Where Route 309 veers toward the right (just past the Dallas Shopping Center), continue straight on Route 415 for 1/4 mile to the second light (stay in right lane). At this light, bear to the right onto Lake Street (2nd street to the right). Follow Lake Street past Center Hill Road. As you drive up Lake Street, you will see the college entrance arch on your right hand side. DO NOT turn right at this arch. CONTINUE STRAIGHT up Lake Street for about a quarter mile where you’ll see several sports fields on your right hand side. When you see the Misericordia University North Entrance sign and the ATM machine, turn right. Continue straight past the Anderson Sports Complex on your left and the baseball field on your right. Continue straight past McHale Hall on your right to the next dormitory on your right hand side which is Gildea Hall. This is where you will register for Road Scholar.
  From Philadelphia Take Route 476 (The PA Turnpike Northeast Extension) To exit 105,Wilkes-Barre. Turn left onto Route 115 North; stay on 115 for about 4 miles to Route 309 North. (Route 115 will turn into Route 309) Stay on 309 for 9 miles to Dallas. In Dallas, continue on Route 309 North. Where Route 309 veers toward the right (just past the Dallas Shopping Center), continue straight on Route 415 for 1/4 mile to the second light (stay in right lane). At this light, bear to the right onto Lake Street (2nd street on the right). Follow Lake Street past Center Hill Road. As you drive up Lake Street, you will see the college entrance arch on your right hand side. DO NOT turn right at this arch. CONTINUE STRAIGHT up Lake Street for about a quarter mile where you’ll see several sports fields on your right hand side. Take Route 29 South; stay on Route 309 South when Route 29 veers off; turn right at first traffic light in Dallas, Center Hill Road (about 17 miles from Tunkhannock). At the second stop sign, turn right onto Lake Street. As you drive up Lake Street, you will see the college entrance arch on your right hand side. DO NOT turn right at this arch. CONTINUE STRAIGHT up Lake Street for about a quarter mile where you’ll see several sports fields on your right hand side. When you see the Misericordia University North Entrance sign and the ATM machine, turn right. Continue straight past the Anderson Sports Complex on your left and the baseball field on your right.
