Located amid the iconic Isles of Shoals in New Hampshire, Star Island is a favorite spot for artists who strive to capture the rugged landscapes and beauty of the New England coastline. Journey by ferry to Star Island and meet with professional artists for class instruction, painting on location and daily critique. Beginning watercolorists learn color mixing, values and perspective, while experienced painters focus on the sky, sea and land as light and weather change. In the evenings, programs are offered that explore the 400 year history of the hauntingly beautiful Isles of Shoals.




Highlights

• Paint on the island that once inspired artist Childe Hassam, and learn about his career and artworks.
• When available, take an optional boat trip to Appledore Island for additional painting opportunities.
• Learn about the history of the Isles of Shoals and the importance of the fishing industry on the region with local experts.

Isles of Shoals

Ten miles off the coast of New Hampshire, the Isles of Shoals are a group of nine small islands. The isles were once a popular retreat for artists and writers such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Celia Thaxter made them famous through her poetry. The Shoals Marine Laboratory and Star Island’s conference center occupy the isles today.
Accommodations
Oceanic House, built in the grand hotel era of the 1800s, and adjacent cottages house the sleeping quarters; most rooms have shared baths; some double and single occupancy rooms have toilet and sink; separate shower facility.

Karyl Hayes
Karyl Hayes studied nursing early on and later taught nursing at Villanova and DePauw universities. She began her art career in the late 1960 and quickly took flight, with a proficieny in watercolor. Karyl works mostly with water media and likes best to be painting on location, trying to catch a sense of the atmosphere and fleeting light. Her favorite “outdoor studio” is the coast of Maine, an affinity perhaps created by growing up in Maine.
 
Doris Rice
Doris Rice's studio is the great outdoors. Painting on location is her inspiration, as she stays "in the moment" to capture the world around her. A graduate of Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, Doris spent early years there as an illustrator. Relocating to New Hampshire in 1979, she changed her focus to plein air painting, traveling to study with various master painters and developing her teaching style to bring others to the joy of creating.

  Room amenities: There are a limited number of rooms equipped with electrical outlets. If you require use of an electrical outlet within your room (for health reasons), be sure to indicate that when registering. Heating elements are not permitted in rooms.
  Facility amenities: Oceanic House, built in the Grand Hotel Era of the 1800s, houses the main lobby, dining room, bookshop, gift shop, and sleeping quarters. A hotel annex, a number of small cottages and stone buildings, and several motel-style units provide additional guestrooms and conference meeting rooms.

Travel Details
  Start of Program:
Arrive at the Isles of Shoals dock (315 Market St.) in Portsmouth, NH between 1:00pm-3:00pm. Boarding begins at 4:00pm, with boat departure at 4:25pm. You will be staying at The Star Island Conference Center that night.
  End of Program:
The boat departs from Star Island at 3:05pm, to return to Portsmouth, NH at 4:30pm. You will be staying at The Star Island Conference Center the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required.
  Parking availability:
Parking in lot at boat dock. Cost $10 per vehicle per day or any part of a day.

C&J Trailways drops off at the Pease Transportation Center in Portsmouth (185 Grafton Road). There is a free trolley bus providing transportation to downtown Portsmouth (then a 5 minute walk to the dock). Taxis can also be called to meet you once you deboard from the bus.

Driving Directions
  From 95 North (Coming from the South) Take NH Exit 7. At end of ramp, turn RIGHT at lights. You should be headed towards downtown Portsmouth. Go approximately ¾ mile, staying in the LEFT LANE as you approach the Portsmouth Sheraton (a large brick building) on your right. The entrance to the Steamship Company dock is on the LEFT, directly across from the Sheraton. The dock is located at 315 Market Street in Porstmouh, NH 03801.

 Arrive To: Arrive at dock in Portsmouth between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Boarding begins at 4:00pm.
 Afternoon: Indoor 1-hour class on Color-Mixing for Intermediates and Beginners
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: Discover why cod changed the face of world exploration and how this fantastic resource in the Gulf of Maine fueled the settlement of New England.

Day 2:
(Tuesday, September 3)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room.
 Morning: Indoor 1-hour class on Values for beginners and intermediates; outside painting and critique for all
 Lunch: Lunch in the hotel dining room.
 Afternoon: Painting in the Art Barn optional Star Island tour (may be in morning)
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room
 Evening: The Fishing Era at the Isle of Shoals Go back in time to the era when the Isles of Shoals was the busiest spot in the New World with hundreds living at the cillage of Gosport on Star Island and fishing the Shoals' waters.

 Morning: Day of Painting on Appledore Optional: Cultural history tour of Appledore Island
 Lunch: Lunch in the dining room.
 Afternoon: Outdoor painting and critique for all
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: The Resort Era of the Isle of Shoals Find out why thousands of people packed their trunks and spent the summer at one of the Isle of Shoals resort hotels.

Day 4:
(Thursday, September 5)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast
 Morning: Indoor 1-hour class on Perspective for Beginners and Intermediates. Outside painting and critique for all. Optional visit to Vaughn Cottage (may be afternoon or morning)
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: Outdoor painting and critique for all.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining hall.
 Evening: The Arts of the Isles of Shoals View some of the extraordinary maritime art produced by the Isles and learn about the artistic salon operated by writer and artist Cecilia Thaxter.

Day 5:
(Friday, September 6)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room.
 Morning: Indoor 1 hour class on Perspective for Beginners and Intermediates. Outdoor painting for all; slides on Childe Hassam.
 Lunch: Lunch in the dining room.
 Afternoon: Continuation of morning's activities with critique later in the afternoon for all.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room
 Evening: Lore & Legends: Pirates, lost treasure, shipwreck, murder and ghosts in the stories of the past at the Isles of Shoals.

Day 6:
(Saturday, September 7)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room.
 Morning: Outdoor painting for all; Art Exhibit of work done during the week.
 Lunch: Lunch in the dining room.
 Afternoon: Continuation of morning's activities with a critique later on.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: The Conference and Education Era at the Isles of Shoals Delve into the history of the summer conferences on Star Island, the development of the Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore, and the natural wonders on Duck and Seavey's Islands.
