Located ten miles off the coast, the Isles of Shoals are a group of nine small islands, once a popular retreat for artists and writers. Explore and photograph the historical beauty of these islands as you stroll Star Island, practicing new techniques and enjoying lectures on digital cameras, composition, creativity and digital editing. Afternoon critiquing sessions allow you see how your photography skills have improved as the week goes by. This program is enriching for both beginners and those with moderate experience with digital photography. Bring your “point & shoot” or advanced digital camera, the camera manual and spare batteries.




Highlights

•Photograph the islands that have inspired artists throughout the ages, while learning about lenses, filters, resolution and imaginative composition.
•Choose subjects from among the sea and sky as you photograph the Isles’ historic buildings and stark granite ledges.
•Explore the 400 year history of the hauntingly beautiful Isles of Shoals through a series of fascinating historical photographs in the evenings.



Activity Particulars

Walking distance between rooms and dining room and classroom and during program can be up to 200 feet over broad walks, paths, and rocky terrain.



All skill levels are welcome, but program is intended for beginner and intermediate photographers. Bring your “point & shoot” or advanced digital camera, manual and spare batteries.

Isles of Shoals

Ten miles off the coast of New Hampshire, the Isles of Shoals are a group of nine small islands. The isles were once a popular retreat for artists and writers such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Celia Thaxter made them famous through her poetry. The Shoals Marine Laboratory and Star Island’s conference center occupy the isles today.



Accommodations
Built in the grand hotel era of the 1800s, the rustic Oceanic House and adjacent cottages provide modest, character-laden lodging for those who appreciate experiencing the authentic past. Most rooms have shared baths; separate shower facility; showers available every other day; not all rooms are equipped with electrical outlets.

  Room amenities: There are a limited number of rooms equipped with electrical outlets. If you require use of an electrical outlet within your room (Typically, only for health reasons), be sure to indicate that when registering. Heating elements are not permitted in rooms.
  Facility amenities: Oceanic House, built in the Grand Hotel Era of the 1800s, houses the main lobby, dining room, bookshop, gift shop, and sleeping quarters. A hotel annex, a number of small cottages and stone buildings, and several motel-style units provide additional guestrooms and conference meeting rooms.

Travel Details
  Start of Program:
Arrive at the Isles of Shoals dock (315 Market St.) in Portsmouth, NH between 1:00pm - 3:00pm. Boarding begins at 4:00pm, with a boat departure at 4:25pm. You will be staying at The Star Island Conference Center that night.
  End of Program:
The boat departs from Star Island at 3:05pm to return to Portsmouth, NH at 4:30pm. You will be staying at The Star Island Conference Center the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required.

Parking in lot at boat dock. Cost $10 per vehicle per day or any part of a day.

C&J Trailways drops off at the Pease Transportation Center in Portsmouth (185 Grafton Road). There is a free trolley bus providing transportation to downtown Portsmouth (then a 5 minute walk to the dock). Taxis can also be called to meet you once you deboard from the bus.

Driving Directions
  From 95 North (Coming from the South) Take NH Exit 7. At end of ramp, turn RIGHT at lights. You should be headed towards downtown Portsmouth. Go approximately ¾ mile, staying in the LEFT LANE as you approach the Portsmouth Sheraton (a large brick building) on your right. The entrance to the Steamship Company dock is on the LEFT, directly across from the Sheraton. The dock is located at 315 Market Street in Porstmouh, NH 03801.
  From 95 South (Coming from the North) Take NH Exit 7. At end of ramp, turn LEFT at lights. You should be headed towards downtown Portsmouth. Day 1: Arrive on Star Island
(Monday, September 2)
   
 Arrive To: Arrive at dock in Portsmouth (315 Market St.) between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Boarding begins at 4:00pm.
 Afternoon: Introduction to the Digital Photography Course. Instructions for shooting the “before and after” photo workshop assignment.
 Dinner: Dinner in hotel dining room
 Evening: Cod Fishing in New England: Discover why cod changed the face of world exploration and how this fantastic resource in the Gulf of Maine fueled the settlement of New England.

Day 2:
(Tuesday, September 3)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room
 Morning: Classroom: The digital camera - pixels, sensors, and camera controls. Out and about: Guided walk to take initial photos of your “before” subjects.
 Lunch: Lunch in the dining room.
 Afternoon: Classroom: Controlling exposure and sharpness - light meters, auto mode photography, controlling shutter speeds and aperture settings to obtain the desired sharpness. Out and about: Guided photo shooting session using information from class lectures.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: The Fishing Era at the Isle of Shoals Go back in time to the era when the Isles of Shoals was the busiest spot in the New World with hundreds living at the cillage of Gosport on Star Island and fishing the Shoals' waters.

(Wednesday, September 4)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in dining room
 Morning: Classroom: Capturing light and color - types of available light, using light to create a desired result or special effect. Out and about: Guided photo shooting session using information from class lectures.
 Lunch: Lunch in dining room
 Afternoon: Classroom: Composition and creativity - rule of thirds, framing, using horizontal, vertical and curved lines to give expression or impact to your photos. Out and about: Guided photo session using information from class lectures.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining hall
 Evening: The Resort Era of the Isle of Shoals Find out why thousands of people packed their trunks and spent the summer at one of the Isle of Shoals resort hotels.

Day 4:
(Thursday, September 5)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining hall
 Morning: Classroom: Composition and creativity - Better photos using interesting perspectives. Out and about: Guided photo session using information from class lectures.
 Lunch: Lunch in the dining hall
 Afternoon: Classroom: Composition and creativity – Avoiding common mistakes and final tips on composition and creativity. Out and about: Guided photo session using information from class lectures.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining hall.
 Evening: The Arts of the Isles of Shoals: view some of the extraordinary maritime art produced by the Isles and learn about the artistic salon operated by writer and artist Cecilia Thaxter.

Day 5:
(Friday, September 6)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in dining room
 Morning: Classroom: The dark room in your computer, editing digital photos. Out and about: Guided photo session using information from class lectures.
 Lunch: Lunch in dining room
 Afternoon: Classroom: Tips on sorting, sharing, archiving, and printing digital photos. Out and about: Guided photo session using information from class lectures
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: Lore & Legends of the Isles of Shoals: Pirates, lost treasure, shipwreck, murder and ghosts all feature in the stories of the past at the Isles of Shoals.

Day 6:
(Saturday, September 7)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room.
 Morning: Classroom: Final instructions for shooting the “after” photos for the assigned workshop project. Out and about: Shooting that perfect “after” photo by putting into practice the techniques you have learned during the week.
 Lunch: Lunch in the dining room.
 Afternoon: Classroom: Reviewing your “before and after” photos to compare the difference.
 Dinner: Dinner in the dining room.
 Evening: The Conference and Education Era at the Isles of Shoals: Delve into the history of the summer conferences on Star Island, the development of the Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore, and the natural wonders on Duck and Seavey Islands.
